At last we are getting to the heart of the matter but alas, she is forced to apologise because someone may choose to take offence.

"Yeh, because everyone has a freezer don't they ? "

What the hell is your point caller? I've countless times bought frozen food and put it in the fridge and eaten it over the next 2 or 3 days, have you never thought of that? I lived for years without a freezer, doing just that.

This thread is bizarre as there are people on it spouting their theories as if this is some hypothetical situation. It's the complete opposite. We ALL cook, have cooked or have the capacity to cook and we are talking from real experience, so if you're going to shoot down the common sense postings here out of some childish inability to say anything that might agree with a bad Tory lady, then that's your silly problem. I'm guessing you're one of the people that can't cook...

And......

A senior York politician has sparked a furious row by saying there is no real poverty in Britain and people should not donate to food banks.

Chris Steward, a Conservative councillor, said living standards had surged, that there was no need for food banks, that they were an insult to starving people around the world, and that donating to them allowed recipients to spend more money on alcohol and cigarettes.

"The fact some give food to food banks, merely enables people who can’t budget (an issue where schools should do much more and I have said the council should) or don’t want to, to have more money to spend on alcohol, cigarettes etc.”

If you're that stupid and selfish to think your kids should get to choose each meal individually then you are too stupid and selfish to have kids. Bowl of cornflakes, milk, maybe a few raisins, banana, slice or two of toast with jam and spread. 50p a head tops. Porridge even less. Couple of minutes prep time each. As a genuine suggestion, might it be a good idea to photocopy some very, very, very basic recipes and ideas on how to prepare simple, filling meals on a very limited budget.  These should take into account that the possibility of limited kitchen equipment available to the food bank claimant.

I will start.

Porridge

Spoon 6 desert spoons of oats (as provided) into a bowl.  Add water till oats are covered.  Stir.  Put in microwave for 2 minutes.  Add as little sugar.  Add a splash of milk.  Eat.

Baked Potato

Get a potato.  Prick it with a fork.  Cook it in the microwave till nearly soft.  Cut top open and add butter, cheese, beans or anything else you have to hand.  Return to microwave for one minute.  Eat.

Soup

Empty bag of pre-cut veg into pan.  Add water and boil for 15 minutes.  Eat.

Every food parcel from the food bank should include the basic ingredients with the information enclosed.  So you will get a box of porridge, a bag of potatoes, a pack of pre-cut vegetables for soup/stew etc.

The poor and hungry beneficiaries should be absolutely delighted with what is supplied.  It will also have health and educational benefits.

In relation to what the poor spend their income on specifically in the issue just of cigarettes the WHO cite has this:

A study in the United Kingdom shows that only 10% of women and 12% of men in the highest socioeconomic group are smokers while 35% of women and 40% of men in the lowest socioeconomic group smoke.3

Of those, studies in America show that from that group those who do smoke use up about 25% on the habit. I've read articles in this country citing similar amounts. I'm not sure what can be done to address such things but until they are addressed there are going to be an awful lot of people living miserable lives. That's before we get to the evil of this because of the tax take being raked off these poor unfortunate people's addiction.

In the late 80's that's exactly what happened. I was a mortgage broker in those days and there were many lenders whose schemes we wouldn't use because we felt it was unfair to our clients to put them in such a vulnerable position.
One lender had a scheme only to be used to applicants with a lot of equity in the property. In the terms of the agreement it said that the lender would foreclose on the mortgage if the borrower missed one payment. It also said that on missing a payment all the interest due over the whole term would become due.  So in other words the borrower then owed the original sum borrowed plus, in many cases, 25 years interest on the loan. The lender actually was actually better off from the borrower not paying the mortgage. Borrowers were being repossesed and made homeless and the judge admitted there was nothing he could as it was all down in the morgage terms. Sad but true I'm afraid.

G1 Jockey – you’re not with it.
Plenty lenders with good rates won’t loan to the bottom end because of the higher probability of default, if they were willing to take on all comers then interest rates would be much higher for all and there’d always be someone else offering low rates because they pick and choose their customers.
So they borrow money at stupid high interest rates either directly or via some hp agreement with likes of Brighthouse, the company estimates the number of likely defaulters and factors that and big profit into the interest rate i.e. that’s what the likes of Wonga do.
Ultimately lenders don’t give a crap about you , they’re in business to make money, so if you’re stupid enough to sign up to mad interest rates or dodgy t&cs’s then it’s on your own head be it as far as they’re concerned.

This poverty and hunger denialism from this Government is really quite revolting In fact it is positively Orwellian. .
Until recently their excuse was that foodbank use was rising because people are lazy and greedy and like something for nothing.
Now its because people can't cook.
All a transparent attempt to obfuscate the issue and avoid the bloody obvious which is that people with NO MONEY CAN'T BUY FOOD and that sanctions mean they have no money. That';s what sanctions means. It means penury and hunger
When you sanction people on any excuse and leave them penniless, of course they will go hungry. What did they expect?

If you have benefits sanctioned, you can run out of money by the time the sanctions are lifted, the time-scale would vary depending on why you're being sanctioned. Just checked and the first sanction is a 13 week stop to your benefit, then 26 weeks, if you think people on the dole have savings lasting up to 13 weeks then you should probably watch too many cherry picked dolehead characters on the benefit programmes TV companies are obsessed with, checked the jsa rate and it's over 70 quid a week, again if you think jas claimants are living the life of riley on 10 quid a day then again you are deluded.

I've seen single blokes on here say 'I can't be bothered filling out all those forms for £60 a week.'

Anybody that says he can turn down £3k a year when he's unemployed is a liar, or stupid, or his savings exceed the limit for collecting JSA.

The you have those that don't claim what they're fully entitled to as they don't know they're entitled to it.

And the odd few that won't claim as it makes them 'scroungers'. The answer to that is simple,  don't tell anybody you're claiming. On the actual issue being discussed 8.50 is extravagant. If your spending 8.50 a day on basic groceries then it is extravagant in the context of a discussion about the current affordability of food for people because clearly a person spending that amount isn't really bothered about the cost and will eat what they want without even knowing how much they spend. As per the Giggilo.

When I mention about this country being ripe at last for some kind of revolution, and from all that ive witnessed and read about, Id be very very surprised if people will put up with the current state of affairs much longer.

EO – you beat me to the punch lol

So what does Tony etal propose in his ‘revolution’ I wonder? The higher rate tax payers on 50%+ tax (40% income tax plus both sets of NI) should have it bumped up further to mabe 80%+ 1970s style so that the jobless sad acts can have more each week?
