The reason they come to school with no breakfast is nothing to do with lack of money or the Governments fault. Sorry but it's just bad parenting. what evidence do you have of this? Well to start with who else but the parent is responsible for getting a 6yo ready for school in the morning. The Government? Or a real live example: I help with teaching the kids a bit of gardening and this year we grew a lot of vegetables which we made into soup for the kids to eat before they went home. The one lad missed the soup at school so we gave him some to take home. The next day we again made some soup but the lad said he didn't want any as he didn't like it. We got him to try it again and he was surprised that it was hot. His mother hadn't bothered to heat it up for him. |

I received free milk at Primary school.
It was rightfully stopped later. The govt should not replace parenting. If you can't afford to give your kids milk, then don't have them. At some point in the future people will take responsibility for their own lives and those of their childrens'... |

I am still loving this idea of people bombing down the job agency at 5am. They could go like, at nine, when it's open, and maybe take a bit of time to look after their kids before then - which many do, to be fair. We don't live in Dickens' England any more, if you can afford cigarettes, you can afford to send your kid to school with a full stomach.

I feel for those who had a job , had kids then lost the job and need help.
Those that had no job but had kids anyway can just go get fkd!! They're being utterly irresponsible in expecting other people to pick up of the bill to raise their kids. The sooner they chop child benefit after the first kid the better. A few of you on here need to get it through your heads that it isn’t the place of those with decent jobs to forever play the part of Boxer in Animal Farm working their nuts off to finance the bottom end. People seek to educate themselves, get suitable training , go and work their nuts off to finance their families not other people’s. I’m sick of the handouts entitlement culture that’s mushroomed in the last 2 or 3 decades. To be honest if you’re 35+ in this country and you’ve no real skills and/or education then you’re very probably one or more of the following :- Thick Useless Lazy Lacking in work ethic What have you been doing with your lives??? Education was pretty much free. Even now it only costs about 5k to train a fully certified domestic electrician, with which you can make very good money, so if you have or had a job at some point but it didn’t pay that great perhaps you should have thought about getting a loan to spend some money on training to further your economic position rather than a car/hols etc etc. Your life is your problem/responsibility not other people’s. |

Every time I read these semi political threads I think of Animal Farm. The problem always being of course that we never get past human nature no matter what the ideology.
Even if we are all equal some will always be more equal than others. I'm not sure whether Orwell made the point but some will always be less equal. |

I watched a news report a while back regardinG 'Food Banks' - the mother was off to get a tin of baked beans from the Food Bank because she 'couldn't afford' to feed her family - Camera pans to son of 'poor' mother sitting in a nicely decorated room currently viewing the internet on his computer.........................that did it for me!

There will normally be a fee but of course I won't charge prize specimens like your good selves. Please get it into your heads boys. If you spend your money on alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, mobile contracts, internet etc etc then you're not poor and it is grossly offensive to the genuinely poor to suggest you are. |

That will have happened Clunge but almost certainly it will be someone with mental health or disability problems.
Cast your minds back 40-50 years and all the wonderful dishes most mums and grandmas could make from scratch and think how far we have fallen away in that time and project another 50 years into the future. It'll be like a horror movie where if we aren't high we will be eating each other.  |

I’m all for helping those in genuine need like that. But being broke cos you spent your jsa on cigs,booze, fobt etc etc isn’t poverty.

I don't know. Not much, I think. I think, and I am not their spokesperson, the large majority of out of date produce goes to be converted to fuel. Not suggesting for a second that is efficient, and it's a crying shame to throw away bread that is still...basically, fine, but that's not entirely the supermarkets' fault.

It can be silly - I bought some ripen at home avocados once that were 4 for 10p. They were past their best before date, but still not ripe.

the RCPCH report says the increasing number of people accessing food banks is a concern.......
Except for functional purposes, the numbers are slightly down compared to 2006 when there had been 7 years continuous growth, govt was of the approved colour for the righteous on here, and the abolition of boom and bust had been achieved. The reasons why crisis handouts are marginally down are a bit more complex and don't reflect well on this govt, but people who think it's increased are mis-staken. And we still have a lot less than FRA and GER. |

I don't think that out of date food could go to anyone to be fair to the supermarkets. You should see Queens Road market in Upton Park when it closes for the night. It gets invaded for free food from skips. So do the charity shops where bags are left outside overnight. I used to use an ATM near the Oxfam shop in East Ham every Saturday, and the bags left outside overnight were opened by people waiting at bus stops on their way to work. This was at 5-15 a.m. |

That's not a supermarket though is it?
We had people rifling through skips too, the health and safety implications are a nightmare. I'm not saying that's fine, it isn't, but letting people rummage through bins is a litigation nightmare. |

Only if the bins are on your property, i.e the supermarket, and behind gates.
Queens Road is an open market with no gates (or used to be, no idea these days) Rathbone Market in Canning Town is the same. A slip road off the A13 goes behind the shops into the car parks. Supermarket skips were on pavements outside the back doors, and fully open to the public. They never took long to overflow as other shops dumped their stuff in them. |
