They would be A-B-C books for those who don't read English. Along with an educational video, which would be displayed in the cell blocks. In the afternoon we would show a Nature video. The remaining hours would show the Test Card accompanied by some calming 'classical' music. Evenings would display an Open University progamme. Perhaps weekends might include a little Opera. Nothing too heavy...just the ones they'll probably know form the adverts.
Personal equipment such as Play Stations would be absolutely banned. These people are here for rehabilitation, NOT to play Shooting and Killing games. The Koran would obviously be banned, as would the Bible. Both books can be very divisive and we will not tolerate that. We treat all of our prisoners equally. Some just get a longer stay than others. |

As someone who did do a short sharp shock in prison i am all for convicts being allowed to read books. From my experience though they alll wanted to read frankie fraser biographies, I was the only thick coont reading charles dickens. CD very overrated imo.

Have a library of approved books and nowt else. If you are in prison you should have limited rights only. Feck them.

It's not about books being available to prisoners necessarily for enjoyment, it's about the activity been encouraged as a means of development.
It's extremely short sighted to ban books from outside and counter productive. If the reader could only find books of interest from outside then that should be an option, just because grayling can't stop drugs that even screws bring in is erroneous. Reading time should be enforced where tvs etc are switched off. |
