I have watched this with incredulity since Grayling the nipple banned books for prisoners. happily a high judge has slapped him down. You cant ban books simply because you cant stop drugs getting in its utterly stupid. Books are the lifeblood of erudition, banning such does no good but further divides. every prisoner should have reading time imo not stopped from reading, its pure stupidity
so 'you' have the belief that uneducated souls are ripe to cause crime wtf does the nipple do? ban books that are a vehicle to educate, the man it an utter fool

Its ok joking BB But even a tory such as yourself must agree that learning lays in the very breast of reading per se. Utterly shallow short sighted nonsense by the nobheads in control

For what it is worth, every prison has a library where they have weekly access to pick books until their hearts are content. Moreover if the library does not have a book the prisoner desires they will source said book from the local library on a loan basis.
Now why would a prisoner insist on having a book brought in from outside when there is adequate provision for him thru facilities inside,I will leave it for you to decide.

Madvlad You answered a query I had. Having never been to jail I wanst sure whether prisons had libraries or not. But given my experience of non jail libraries under this government cuts Id suggest they probs aint smash ducks eh? The point here isnt about the desire to absorb books not within, its a defense against not holding the ills from without

according to the radio today the prison libraries are poorly stocked and you cant visit them freely.
Why cant they just open the parcels that the books are delivered to inmates in ??

that seems most sensible
sadly we don't do common sense anymore
Prisoners should be allowed books, must they must be checked fro drugs, contraband, etc

I have already said there is more than adequate provision for prisoners to have access to reading facilities,I could give you lots of reasons why prisoners would prefer for their desire to be educated "thru books brought in from the outside" but no one is interested in that.

Im sorry peeps but I have to say that written by mesen is almost Shakespearean. MadVlad like I quantified above, the singular inability of those outside jail to stop drugs go in is no reason not to justify those inside want more.

think you lost the concept. If outside jail's libraries that are getting shut almost as quickly as pubs are concerned (and which I have every reason to suspect prison ones even less adapt) then it stands to reason any erudite individual may seek outside assistance no?

the private sector argument and ethos must stop for those in jail. If the concept is for the private sector to provide a service better than the state, then those in state run institutions are being denied a service. Asking for books is akin to wanting a better stream of knowledge and mustnt be denied those wanton of such

I believe the denial of knowledge to people is one of the worst things we can do to them
and offers no long term benefit
Sadly our government and media do this a lot know, this is entirely for our their own ends
it benefits no one else...knowledge is power!

A prisoner could read all day and obtain degrees, but if he has been done for murder, rape or serious drug offences, he's not going to find it any easier to get a job.

An excellent reason to deny ALL prisoners access to reading material. Congratulations!

The authorities should decide which books, if any, should be available to any specific prisoner. They should also control it's point of supply. Prisoners should be treated with suspicion at all times, especially when it includes contact with the outside world. They are always planning something.

Who is supposed to have to read all these books to establish whether they are appropriate for a prisoner or not? What if they are in Arabic or are interpretations of the Koran, for example? They aren't all going to be Enid Blyton books or one of Jordan's autobiographies.

An appropriate time for a note on Newham.
Some time ago, in a bid to encourage cultures to mix with each other, Newham Council removed all foreign newspapers from the libraries, stopped printing govt documents in other languages, and stopped the use of Council paid interpreters.
I'd guess it didn't work.
25% of the population don't have English as their first language.

They would be A-B-C books for those who don't read English. Along with an educational video, which would be displayed in the cell blocks. In the afternoon we would show a Nature video. The remaining hours would show the Test Card accompanied by some calming 'classical' music. Evenings would display an Open University progamme. Perhaps weekends might include a little Opera. Nothing too heavy...just the ones they'll probably know form the adverts. Personal equipment such as Play Stations would be absolutely banned. These people are here for rehabilitation, NOT to play Shooting and Killing games. The Koran would obviously be banned, as would the Bible. Both books can be very divisive and we will not tolerate that. We treat all of our prisoners equally. Some just get a longer stay than others.

As someone who did do a short sharp shock in prison i am all for convicts being allowed to read books. From my experience though they alll wanted to read frankie fraser biographies, I was the only thick coont reading charles dickens. CD very overrated imo.

It's not about books being available to prisoners necessarily for enjoyment, it's about the activity been encouraged as a means of development. It's extremely short sighted to ban books from outside and counter productive. If the reader could only find books of interest from outside then that should be an option, just because grayling can't stop drugs that even screws bring in is erroneous. Reading time should be enforced where tvs etc are switched off.
