Russian doping claims: 99% of athletes guilty, German TV alleges

As many as 99% of Russian athletes are guilty of doping, a German TV documentary has alleged.
The programme claims that Russian officials systematically accepted payment from athletes to supply banned substances and cover up tests.
The documentary, shown by Das Erste, also implicates the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in covering up the abuse.
The Russian Athletics Federation (RAF) says the allegations are "lies".
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) has said it will "fully investigate" the claims.
The BBC has not independently verified the documentary's allegations and is awaiting responses from athletes targeted in the programme.
In the documentary, broadcast on Wednesday, former discus thrower Yevgeniya Pecherina claimed that "most, the majority, 99%" of athletes selected to represent Russia use banned substances.
"You can get absolutely everything," added the 25-year-old Russian. "Everything the athlete wants."
Pecherina is currently serving a 10-year doping ban that is due to end in 2023. She had already been handed a two-year suspension in 2011.
Liliya Shobukhova, who won the London Marathon in 2010, is also interviewed in the programme and admits paying the Russian Athletics Federation 450,000 euros (£350,000) to cover up a positive doping test.
She is currently serving a two-year ban after irregularities were detected in her biological passport.
The documentary also included an undercover video purporting to show 800m runner Mariya Savinova, who won gold at the 2012 Olympics in London, admitting to using the banned steroid oxandrolone.
The video was dubbed into German with the original audio track absent, but the channel said it possessed an unedited version.

Everyone in the sport knows this (or at least has suspected as much).  A bit like cycling in the 90's and 00's.  Seb Coe as a massive job to do if he wins the IAAF presidency to claw back the credibility with the general sporting public.  Nobody believes what they are seeing any more.  Rumours that doping is rife in Kenya amongst distance runners have been doing the rounds for several years too.

Of course what this story points out is if all the Russians are doping and not getting caught then the anti-doping program is useless - bringing all athletes under suspicion - there's no reason to believe anyone we see is clean.

All top sportsmen and women are doping - Russian or not.

With the huge amounts of money at stake in all professional sports these days all sports must have a doping problem. We like to think that it always Johnny Foreigner who is doping and not our beloved sports people but common sense tells you otherwise. Common sense also tells you to wonder about football with the enormous fortunes to be had for success. How much is up for grabs for the winner of the Champions League?

As an athletics fan for many, many years, the thing that irritates me is that it's very easy to sling sh1t at that sport
regarding drugs because they do catch and ban high profile athletes, as they also do in cycling,
when other sports where drugs would clearly be beneficial, like football, rugby, cricket and tennis hardly get a mention.
Report scandanavian_haven December 7, 2014 10:17 AM GMT

Report Degs December 7, 2014 10:24 AM GMT
I don't see why not. A footballer can run 10K during a match and a 5 set tennis match can last 3 or 4 hours
with recovery needed for the next match within a day or so. Why wouldn't EPO or HGH or even steroids be beneficial ?
Report A_T December 7, 2014 10:30 AM GMT
There's no doubt in my mind that doping is rife in football and tennis - and that the game's biggest stars are all at it. Everyone's making too much money to do anything about it and noone really cares.

Ah, I see - strength and fitness aren't significant factors in tennis and football.
Report scandanavian_haven December 7, 2014 11:00 AM GMT
They, unlike Cycling and Sprinting, is not literally the be all and end all, good training and recovery techniques suffice - they have plenty of drugs tests in football and even turn up to training and homes unannounced to take the tests - and pretty much they only really find in their systems the use of recreational non performance enhancing stimulants.
Report jed.davison December 7, 2014 11:56 AM GMT
The demands of Grand Slam tennis tournaments are exactly the same demands placed upon cyclists by the Tour de France. In fact, anabolic steroids and blood doping may as well have been invented for tennis players.

The purpose of steroids is not so much to ensure outstanding and outlying one-off performances, but to enable the taker to train longer and harder than the non-taker, thus making such performances more likely.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that two current top-ten players owe their fortunes to the use of PEDs, and that football clubs, cyclists and various other of their countrymen have been involved in systematic drug misuse for decades. It's all very well trying to right the historical wrongs of long-forgotten Olympiads and pointing the blame at reds under the bed or black bogeymen, but it's happening here, in Europe, America, everywhere.
Report A_T December 7, 2014 11:59 AM GMT
If tennis and football were predominately down to skill you'd get top players playing into their forties. Fact is you don't because they no longer have the necessary speed, strength and stamina.

I would refer you to Operation Puerto. Although only cyclists' were named Dr Fuentes admitted treating people from other sports including tennis and football. Former cyclist Jesús Manzano told reporters from France 3 that he had seen "well-known footballers" from La Liga visit the offices of Dr Fuentes.
President of FIFA Sepp Blatter, at a World Anti-Doping Agency meeting in Montreal, was reportedly interested in the contents "of the Puerto file". Le Monde had reported in December 2006 that they had possession of documents of Fuentes detailing "seasonal preparation plans" for Spanish football clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. These plans did not specifically name any players.

I imgin the temptation for a footballer at a mid level championship team to dope to improve their performance to get a move to the Premier League is very real indeed. You are talking about going from £5k a week to £20k a week. Or even to help recover from injury. If you are 28, in League 1 or 2 coming to the end of your contract and injured, you have to prospect of being released, with no job and little hope of getting one.

The one which people should be concerned about is boxing. Not because it will be any more rife but because of the possible ramifications. In most other sports you risk beating your opponent not killing them.
Report gentlemanjohn December 10, 2014 12:19 AM GMT
The truth is every sport has had to be dragged kickign and screaming to firstly admit it has a doping problem and then, belatedly, to actually do something about it. Its reached the point where you can almost feel a twinge of sympathy for pro cyclists now, handy whipping boys when other sports are just as dirty. Funny as someone alluded to, the identities of all the cyclists from Operation Puerto were named while all the other athletes - half of barca and real madrid among them probably - remained anonymous and reportedly had their files destroyed.

Leading the hall of shame is tennis, which not only spent years prevaricating about PEDs but practically allowed players to take whatever they liked without fear of sanction. I recall a case a few years ago when a tournament press officer berated journalists for asking a female tennis star about a dope test she'd just failed. Needless to say she got no ban or fine.

And i agree with the previous poster, the prospect of drugs and boxing is a scary one indeed. I'd be curious to know too what the testing procedures are like in Formula One racing
Report bix December 10, 2014 6:13 PM GMT
It is believed that the names of the footballers and tennis players involved in Operation Puerto will be revealed when DR Fuentes plays his ace and writes the book.

Rugby has also become scary and the authorities are now very concerned about the life threatening injuries because the players are so big, strong and fast now.

i am not suggesting they were. It was just that SH said it was the characters who were still running when others had slowed down who were suspicious.Don't forget though it may not be individuals who are at it. It may be those "vitamin" supplements given by the club Doctor.
But from Gary Neville himself

In his biography, Gary Neville makes a mention of something that happened in the English camp during the 1998 World Cup. Players lined up to receive injections.

When the 1998 World Cup started, some of the players started taking injections from Glenn’s favourite medic, a Frenchman called Dr Rougier. After some of the lads said they’d felt a real burst of energy, I decided to seize any help on offer. So many of the players decided to go for it before that Argentina match that there was a queue to see the doctor.

What was in these injections, we’ll likely never know.
