You can't have West Ham and East Ham, as they no longer exist, unless you visited there before 1965, which was when they were separate entities, then they were merged to form the wonderful multicultural haven of Newham

Other West Ham trivia for those who have never read it before,there can't be many left on here now...

Thames Ironworks F.C. used to play their matches at the Memorial Grounds in West Ham. In 1904 they became West Ham United and moved to 'Upton Park' or 'The Boleyn Ground', whichever you prefer, as they are the same place.

It means that West Ham United have NEVER played a match in West Ham.

I will for ever defer to your greater knowledge, CMAT, of this particular corner of the great metropolis but your use of the present tense in the above sentence would indicate that the nomenclatures are still in current usage and they certainly were when I passed, rather quickly I might add, through the locality first in the early 1980s. I have been there since and enjoyed a good old jellied mash and eels, or something, and a knees up with a local cockney geezer chap by the name of Mustafa.

In other news, I thank everyone for their contributions, however, I have looked some of the places up on Google Maps and they appear to consist of a hedge. If we could keep to 'hams with at least some point of interest such as their own newspaper, a choice of pubs, a brothel or a mosque I would be most grateful.

This is true of the older generation.

I was born and raised in West Ham, and would NEVER say that I was from Newham to anybody who asked where I was from.

Even 'West Ham' has its own version of 'who's who'.

Most of the people who watch east end telly programmes have heard of Canning Town.

Even Britain's greatest living actor, Mr Danny Dyer, says he's from Canning Town. In truth, he's from Custom House, the same as me, but nobody has heard of it. It's a much smaller area within the MASSIVE E.16 postal district that covers both CH and CT, plus Silvertown and North Woolwich.

Ask your mum if she knows any of these names: Terry Gill, Billy Thompson, Charlie Liversley, Lenny Price, Bruce and Dave Carter. All fine upstanding Custom House chaps. She may know of Billy 'Jango' Williams, he got everywhere, but was from Jenkins Road, Plaistow, originally. Dropped dead in the street two years ago.

I still wonder what the Tolpuddle Martyrs and Wat Tyler would have made of "The 42 Inch Plasma Television Riots" of 2011 ?   A small number of people were pretending to be so upset by the shooting of a local, erm, 'Community Leader' that they responded by stealing expensive branded goods from leading names on the High Street.

Dersingham and Sheringham aren't that far from me.

Actually, having checked the map, Snettisham, Great Bircham, East Rudham, Heacham and Barsham can't be far away either.

But, to be fair and to be honest, Billy "Jango" Williams sounds a lot more interesting...

My junior school mate, Billy was a bad'un.

Also known as 'the bomb' because of his right hand punch, which I thankfully managed to avoid when we were against each other at the age of 12. 

He was a promising heavyweight who was taken under the wing of Angelo Dundee, and flown off to the good ol' U.S. of A.

Camne back here for a holiday in the mid 1970s, did a few serious things wrong and got put in prison. 

Angelo dropped him like a hot potato.

Boxing licence revoked, he turned to crime, and that was the start of his downfall, but it took a long while to arrive.

His dad, Olly, boxed, so did his older brother, Chris. Younger brother Johnny never got into it.  None of them ever had the desire to be a criminal. But if you can't get a job, you still have to pay bills, but Billy was always OTT in dealing with people. Made a lot of enemies.

Us who knew him were surprised he got to be that old (61)
