Brand's use of the English language is pretentious and appalling. Many of the passages in his writing could be used as parodies of the(bad)examples cited in Orwell's "Politics and the English Language."

Pretentious diction, verbosity, using flowery language to disguise or evade clear meaning, etc.

David Fishwick - don't you understand that I went out of my way there to post in "plain" English, without the use of dead or inappropriate metaphors? This is actually quite difficult, as Orwell points out in his essay.

Perhaps you need to read "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell, which is available for free, online...

He is on about the sensationalist interpretation of new wave thinkers man. How the hippy movement at the time in the 60`s was misunderstood and created fear for the hillbilly creed man.

I think he genuinely does care about the underclass and less fortunate in our society.

When the old and infirm are dying , through lack of food and heat
When thousands of children of the poorest in society die before they're 5 years old.
When thousands ( even those on work ) have to use foodbanks in order to survive,
When thousands sleep sleep rough ,unable to find shelter, even in the doss houses.

Millions in this country are below the poverty line.

Brand could do himself a favour by campaigning to the plight of our elderly this winter. Ignite some social compassion, i think it would be a winner.

The predicted growth in population is said to reach c75million by 2037. This is driven by increase in net migration, and by changes in birth/ death rates. Interestingly it is calculated that 40 % of births in the UK are unplanned. This increase will mean we have to plan for and change the way we live, in order that the necessary resources are available and that our infrastructure can support such growth. I assume these aspects are being addressed by relevant experts in their field.

I haven't the answer to your questions. Other than change is required, if we are to make better use of the resources we have, which include, power,money and a desire to create a more fairer society, where this is not the huge gap between the ' haves and Have nots ' . Unless steps are taken to redistribute  the wealth in this country, I see an increasing growth in the fabulously rich and the desperately poor, and in the 21st Century in such a country like ours, is shameful.

To your other point, ( and relative to the above) , I agree. Again it is shameful that we allow our elderly to suffer the hardship and indignity of going without adequate food and/or heating, so that thousands will die this winter as a result. Whilst at the same time £billions are spent on promoting the Xmas festivities. Our sense of values and what is important are being lost in the wave of greed and profit for the few at the cost of the many. It has always been so, but it has to change.
