Is there a committee who decides on these things? Is it the Guardian or the BBC?
I don't like cats - is that ok? or racist
I don't like Americans - I think that's very PC these days
I don't like Indian food - I think that's ok
I don't like Indians - that's not ok, I presume
I don't like religion - that's probably very PC these days
I don't like muslims - go to jail, no question
What is racism, really & logically? Just thinking.
Pause Switch to Standard View I'm a bit confused - am I a racist?

The key words have become ''to discriminate against.''
So if you discriminate in any way against another race, either for them or against them you have acted in a racist manner and must be judged as racist.

Although many forms of blatant racism like positive discrimination seem to be acceptable.
Nevertheless if you discriminate in favour of one type then you must be discriminating against another.
Like the BBC in their quest to ensure that black people are represented in the numbers they see fit on television and radio.

Anyone who claims they are not a racist in some way would have a hard time proving it.

A common call against the BNP and EDL was that they were 'knuckle draggers'

I think this implies that they were likened to apes.

But this was never considered racist.

Now let us look at cases of supporters throwing bananas at black footballers.

I think this implies that they were likened to apes.

This is considered racist.

In the Guardian recently, Prof Bhikhu Parekh, the Labour peer who chaired the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain, recently argued that the language around race has changed. He wrote “The term racism has undergone a change of meaning. It has lost its moral force. We use it today too freely. After the war if you said someone was racist, you had images of Hitler. A racist was someone who hated people. Now it is applied to someone who might say: ‘I love my people and want to keep others at a distance.’”

The whole world is racist...especially those who demand that we stamp it out! For example: Anybody who states that we should have a higher proportion of black/ethnic police officers. That we should have more women in government or on the board of company directors. That is simply pure racism and sexism.
You should not notice what race or sex or religion or colour anybody is...then you are truly PC. And probably deaf, blind and stupid.
But, of course, I would not notice any of your afflictions, because that would be handicapist!

Having had the living **** kicked out of me and all my money, watch etc. stolen off me many years ago by 4 young black blokes I have always had a dislike/fear of young black boys/young adults. This doesn't apply to blacks over about 40 even though bizarrely my assailants would themselves now be in their 50s.

Am I a racist? It doesn't apply to the whole race. I have never discriminated against anyone, indeed I have employed young black people who I felt were suitable for a position when I could have given a job to a white candidate.

In reply to 'call me a taxi', The BNP etc were likened to apes because their political views were considered to display low intelligence. The black footballers were likened to apes because they were black.

I think the difference is fairly easy to spot.

That would appear to be an error, as Nick Griffin went to Oxford, and also gained a boxing 'blue'.

In a general knowledge quiz, I'd back Griffin against a black footballer every time.

On further reflection, I'd also back him against a white footballer every time, they're all thick. Laugh

I've become a lot more racist in recent years, specifically against those of Islamic faith.

I'm frustrated at their apparent refusal to fit in to British society, preferring instead to create a mini version of the Pakistani culture they (or their parents) left behind.

I'm disgusted to see Halal products being sold in high street supermarkets; schools segregating their pupils; governors with a secret agends; calls for Sharia law to be enforced in certain areas; honour killings, the list is long.

I'm angered at the media's refusal to truly reflect the problems Muslims are causing in this country; the recent Rotherham scandal being a perfect example.  One thousand four hundred white children being abused by a cabal of Pakistani men is hard to get one's head around, the sheer numbers are staggering and the fact that the racist angle is being played down a national disgrace.

I realise my views are racist and far from being politically correct but one might as well be honest.

Hold a similar view myself and have believed for a while that these money grabbing assassins calling themselves Islamic State   have appeared at the right time and the right place.

Before they arrived on the scene, this country was handing the lease of the nation over to Islam without a struggle.

Even the masses will have to raise their heads from the sand with these daily outrages, Tower Hamlets can yet be recovered from this filthy organisation.

Remember a few years ago when blair was the front man for the establishment?, you could lose a job for being a member of the BNP or passing leaflets about Rotherham, these days the PC brigade are looking likely to be the ones considered to be the knuckle draggers.

Pokermonster. I too must agree. When I read about people getting their heads cut off in the streets of London it puts me off those who carry out these atrocities. The poor lady yesterday and Lee Rigby appear to have been randomly decapitated by Islamic converts. Whilst we know little of yesterday's attack I can't imagine that the recent beheadings of journalists which have been so widely publicised have helped.

There must surely at some stage be a stirring of the masses as I fear similar things are only likely to increase.

I don't think classifying people as racist or non-racist is particularly helpful. Actually, I read a psychology book recently that more than half convinced me that we are all naturally racist to varying extents. I think it's more important to stop discrimination, including positive discrimination. Also, it's reasonable to classify certain views as racist.

It's a bit like classifying someone as an alcoholic. Rather than saying "Don't be an alcoholic", it's more helpful to say "Don't drink so much that you really damage your body/reduce your mind to swiss cheese/make a tit out of yourself every Friday night".

I don't understand why "we are all naturally racist to varying extents" - what is natural racism?
I agree with "it's more important to stop discrimination" but not sure about "including positive discrimination".  I used to think that positive discrimination was bad but certain members of society are underrepresented in many areas - this could well be because of previous discrimination against them (women, ethnic minorities, short people, etc). So is positive discrimination needed to redress the balance?

And I don't understand this at all "It's a bit like classifying someone as an alcoholic. Rather than saying "Don't be an alcoholic", it's more helpful to say "Don't drink so much that you really damage your body/reduce your mind to swiss cheese/make a tit out of yourself every Friday night"."  I'm either an alcoholic or have a serious alcohol dependency and I am aware of the risks involved. But it's Friday!

Charlie,

Regarding your first point, psychologists have demonstrated that showing photos of black men bring to mind more negative images and words than with white men. I can't rememeber the details of the experiments but they were fairly convincing.

The interesting thing is that the author of the book took the test and corroborated the result, even though he was half black himself!

I suppose that it's more accurate to say that we're naturally groupist, and will have formed certain opinions about certain racial groups that naturally and involuntarily come to mind when we see people of those races.

The details are important  Who were shown the photos? And how does that prove "natural racism".

Racism is 'hardwired' into the human brain - and people can be prejudiced without knowing it. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2164844/Racism-hardwired-huma...
But look at source.

Also look at this: New Evidence That Racism Isn't 'Natural' http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/10/new-evidence-that-racism-isnt-natural/263785/

Or maybe this: http://www.integratedsociopsychology.net/racism_natural.html

These are hardly academic sources but do illustrate the problem of assuming "natural racism".

Get a group of "normal" 2-5 year olds of different races.  Do you think that they would exhibit racist tendencies?  I think not; they wouldn't be naturally racist.

Charlie,

No problem.

OK, I've just had another look at the book (Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell), and then I went to the actual website (implicit.harvard.edu) and did the test itself (you don't have to give your email address). Basically, you've got to sort faces in the categories black or white. You also have to sort words into good (e.g. glorious, love) or bad (e.g. evil, nasty). The words or faces flash up one at a time. The interesting parts are:

1. When you have to put white faces or good words into one category, and black faces or bad words into another category.
2. When you have to put white faces or bad words into one category, and black faces or good words into another category.

It's way easier with 1 than with 2. Try it.

Now, I'm not suggesting that we're born racist, more than we're born with a tendency to put people into groups, and that by the time you're an adult, you're probably subconsciously associating white people with good things and black people with bad things.

Seriously, try the test.
