What a load of bollox. Scotland`s produced great thinkers and great scientists from the first day us Picts evolved on these shores and Scotland has been a major centre of learning for Europe and the World long before the Act Of Union in 1706.

The ancient universities of Scotland:

University of St Andrews – founded 1413
University of Glasgow – founded 1451
University of Aberdeen – founded 1495
University of Edinburgh – founded 1583

I think that similar to in business there is strength in size.

I could type facts which disprove this as they aren't sinking in, but they are on the Queen bumps into Salmond thread.

Walking around with hands over ears repeating 'bigger is better' doesn't make it so.

The time when great Scots were inventing things was surely just the time of invention and discovery and nationality was not a huge factor.

Prof Patrick Dunleavy gave a figure of £200m for immediate start up costs.

Scottish Labour were happy to spend more than that on a Glasgow Airport Rail Link to save an 8 minute bus journey from Gilmour St.

Even if long term costs topped £1bn, it would still be cheaper than the eventual cost of the (reduced) Edinburgh tram network.
By:

Probably the same as the trams rather than cheaper, I better make that correction.

If big is always better, why is it that according to the 2013 UN report on Happiness the countries where the people were happiest are always small:

1. Denmark
2. Norway
3. Switzerland
4. Netherlands
5. Sweden
7. Finland
8. Austria
9. Iceland

And if you prefer simply to compare GDP per capita then the list is almost exactly the same...

Throw in the democracy index which I have mentioned before aswell for the hat trick.

I at one time had big doubts but if you open your mind to the information out there then there is nothing to fear. In fact I am now convinced the opposite is true.

I refuse to give in to the fear that we need to be bigger to protect me from the banks failing or from the terrorists that want to get me.

I would rather we broke the banks up properly and put rules in place to prevent it happening again rather than need to be big enough to pick up the pieces when their criminality and greed inevitably go wrong.

.....FFS Scotland.....its not about now, or Salmond.....its about 10, 20, 50, 70, 100, 200 years time.  Take your proper place among the nations.......all the "issues" and "personalities" of today will be irrelevant. It will be about how you make your lives better for yourselves.

Absolutely SPOT ON.

Interesting that the UK government has just raised the terrorism threat level to ´severe´ just before the referendum. FFS is there no end to the scaremongering?

Scotland would of course be safer against terrorists as part of the union...with 80bn quid nuclear weapons and new aircraft carriers to protect us...

The way he carries on it seems its more like a vote for a President Salmond than  actual Scottish independence.

There will be an election in Scotland in 2016, independent or not. "President" Salmond can be removed then, but not before. On 18/9, we have a REFERENDUM, NOT AN ELECTION.

FFS this referendum is nothing to do with Alec Salmond. It´s a vote for independence.

If you don´t like Salmond fair enough, you can vote for somebody else at the next Scottish election, but don´t confuse the issues.

It will be Salmonds party doing the negotiations though until a new election.

The Yes supporters are being asked to give answers to questions that are impossible to answer until such time as the real negotiations begin...as the Bitter Together camp well know.

How can the Scottish government answer questions on currency, the EU, NATO etc until after a Yes vote?

How many other newly independent nations were able to answer these questions before they became independent?

Salmond seems to be able to give the answers in relation to free prescriptions,  no university fee's, getting rid of trident and affordable childcare though and using them as reasons for a yes vote when there's no evidence regarding whether an independent Scotland would be in favour of these policies, they are feasible or that any newly elected party would have similar policies.

I´m not sure what it is you don´t understand Dude. Of course the elected Scottish government will be doing the negotiations post independence, who else should do it? But negotiations over currency, the EU etc will take years not weeks or months. Every party will have a chance at the 2016 election to set out their policies and the Scottish people will decide what they want.

And, of course Salmond can give definitive answers about the things you mention because these are things that come under the current powers of the Scottish government, and things that the SNP was elected to do. If other parties want to put fee prescriptions, university fees, and unaffordable childcare in their 2016 election manifestos let them see how far it gets them.

I don't understand how you can say the referendum is nothing to do with Salmond when his party will be doing the negotiations and likely be forming the constitution of the new Scotland if it's a yes vote.

Your missing the point. He can't in relation to a post independent Scotland for the reasons in my post but he consistently uses them as reasons for voting Yes when they are merely SNP polices.

The nationalist stance on this, as is their stance on everything, completely unable to stand up to scrutiny.

They printed a taxpayer funded 670 page SNP manifesto wish list full of assertions and fantasy and statements of what will happen that are completely outwith their control. With just one page on finance.
This SNP tome of toilet paper is apparently the independence bible, and will happen, and is used as the guide to what will (they say) happen, their advertising brochure. BUT as soon as you bring up anything that sounds "bad" however, well THAT should be ignored for now, it can't be discussed, that's for negotiation and lets put that to the side, sweep it under the carpet, lets not scare the natives with "facts" or "reality".

And if you don't like Salmond or the SNP? Well actually it's suddenly all nothing to do with the SNP despite the fact they'll be negotiating it according to what is laid out in their B/S white paper. In the debate the other night Salmond was ranting on about he, specifically HE, like some sort of President, was to be given the "mandate" to negotiate. Watch it again if you don't believe me.

It's *ALL* about that arrogant egotistical b*ll**** and his deluded party.

As I say, it doesn't stand up to the remotest scrutiny or logic. Anyone with any sense can see it.

The YES campaigners showing their class in Kirkcaldy where Jim Murphy was pelted with eggs as was one of their own, a cancer sufferer, who asked them to stop. Later in Montrose a group of OAPs were subjected to verbal abuse for wearing NO badges and speaking up for the Union. The violence has obviously struck a cord with the Belfast pub.
Alias I have replaced my Union Flag with the Maribor badge in honour of sporting integrity but it will return next week and as regards the Irish I was, of course, ignoring their foreign neighbours the Oirish. HTH.

The Yes attitude of sending mobs to make sure alternative views just aren't heard really is 30s Beerhall stuff from an earlier bunch of Nationalists. They are so utterly fanatically convinced they are in the right and opposing views are wrong, they just can't see anything wrong with it.

things turning nasty on the campaign trail!!!!! cant say I am surprised. it was only a matter of time before the "yes we want it now" brigade showed a total disregard towards those who dare to have another point of view. I ask myself if this sort of behaviour is seen as acceptable by the "yes" camp then what the hell will Scotland be like as a place should they get their way? if Scotland decides to go it alone what would be the reaction should the pro union voters take to the streets in protest? vigilantes, organised mobs, etc etc could become the order of the day. the tactics played out by the "yes" voters has opened a very large can of worms and I fear things may possibly get out of hand if nothing is done. whatever happens on Thursday 18 September 2014 Scotland will not be the same place as we know it today. tourists will decide to go elsewhere in fear of getting caught up in the aftermath of the vote because  the view that Scotland is a "friendly" place to visit will sadly no longer be true.. SadSad

Surely a person so revolted by eggs and abuse being hurled wouldn't say this about a politician who he disagrees with being attacked on the street?

Hopefully this will keep him quiet for a while.

Without 'condoning violence' as you later stated, you hoped a broken jaw (reported at time of posting, now confirmed as NOT the case) would keep Galloway quiet?

The organised campaign against Jim Murphy is wrong. I find it absurd. Abuse is unacceptable. By all means go to these events, take note of points he makes and make up leaflets which counter his points to hand them out but this is out of order.

Throwing eggs is childish and damaging to the campaign but eggs wash off. Scalded skin and broken jaws (which I repeat was the report at time of posting, not the outcome) are harder to put right but of course the former did not happen and if the latter happens to the 'right' person it gives you 'hope' he will be 'kept quiet for a while.'

I think any credibility you had has now gone and you are best ignored.

john 92. you have just confirmed my point. you state my credibility has gone and I am best ignored. I am best ignored because I am not in the same camp as yourself. which I assume is a tactic of "yes" campaigners by way of shutting up anyone who dares have a different point of view. as far as I am aware democracy still rules on these islands (pre-independence of course) with having an opinion on such a massive event not seen as a bad thing and hopefully that will always be the case. I wish you well and no harm, and I trust whatever way Scotland decides to go you will run with what the majority decide? take care..Wink

conductor, while of course throwing eggs at people is infantile behaviour it is small fry (no pun intended) compared to the many hardships ordinary people in Scotland have to suffer every day because of Tory and NL policies. It is because NL are in bed with the Tories and not standing up to welfare cuts, low wages, privatisations, the bedroom tax etc that they are reviled in Scotland today and are being treated in the way they are.

Let Murphy stand in the Scottish election in 2016 and see how popular he is...

For the record I share your concerns if this is not stopped. It has to be loudly condemned by all and stopped now.

John may be an exception but looking at the cybernat posters on various newspapers, they see nothing wrong with sending mobs to silence Murphy. They are basically saying he's a wimp and should man up etc. They don't get what's wrong with it. They are also lapsing into normal "mad conspiracy" mode and trying to say the Egg guy was a secret agent plant and all the protesters are just pissed off Labour supporters!!! It's incredble.

The Yes campaign social media is right there with them organising things, then at the demo they appear and surround Murphy and shout him down. You see the videos, he's surrounded by an intimidating mob of people with Yes boards and Yes clothes crowding round shouting and baying and heckling making it pretty much impossible for people to ask Murphy questions or hear the response.

Egg is a complete side issue, they are trying to silence his side of the debate.

I was only stating my point of view. tip the odds I totally agree with your comments regarding the tory and labour party in Scotland. but I am not convinced nationalism is the answer to the policies put on the fine people of Scotland.we could debate until well beyond 18 September about what is best for Scotland. the good thing about the vote is at least we will know what the people of Scotland feel about it and more importantly what the future entails. good luck to you as well.Excited

I never have a problem when someone articulates a differing point of view as you and others have done. I would never ignore someone for that or try and shut it down and I think most would agree if they read my posts on this topic. I do know when to stop hitting my head off a brick wall though.
