hi kenbo, first of all i wish you and your wife all the best and its brings home how much we take for granted.

I went through a nightmare experience with my new born son last summer and I will pass on what I learnt and know full well what it is like to see a loved one in lots of trouble.

1 - Take time out for yourself. I know this sounds selfish, but it will do you good and I think this passes on. First time my boy was in hospital was for a month and we were 130 miles from home. My mates bought my daughter down and we had a great day out with the families and while i did feel guilty leaving my son for a few hours, it did me and my wife a world of good, just to have a laugh with our mates and forget about what we were going through. Another time i just went to the pub and watch the lions and had a couple of pints, i dont drink, but really fancied just getting out of the hospital, second time he was in i went to see aston villa, just for a break for a few hours.

2 - Have you been assigned a family liaison councillor. I found the one they assigned us was brilliant and really easy to talk too and im a typical bloke and dont share my feelings that well, it took me about a 2 weeks to open up, after always hiding my tears away from my wife, but i found talking to her helpful and dont be scared to ask any question, they have heard them all before.

3 - The NHS will always tell you the worse, i spoke to the liaison woman about this and its because they dont want to give you false hope and face lawsuits down the line, which i do understand why they do this. If i was to believe  what we were told in the first 2 days when they were trying to decide what was going on with the boy, he was going to be disable, need care for the rest of his life, would struggle in school and never play any sport, the whole lot. All i can say now, is 8 months on, you cant tell the difference between him and any other kid at nursery, he just starting to crawl and put him in the walker and he will chase his sister around and she will tire before him.

I wish the pair of you the best wishes

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

Thank you for that post Kenvil.

After yesterdays uplifting visit I said to myself I would go to the bookies tomorrow (today Confused ). A mate came round at 9.30am this morning and we had 45 mins in there. I just checked the results and I haven't got much to come back, so some things don't change!

The nurse who looks after her for 12 hours a day is a superstar, and she told me same thing about lawsuits. In the day and age we live in I can fully understand why they don't want to give false hope if they are going to be hit with a claim.

I'm very similar to you, Tracey had never seen me cry in the eight years we've been together, but when we were told on Wednesday that her chances of recovery weren't very optimistic I couldn't help myself.

I haven't been assigned a family liasion officer but it is something that I might do in a few weeks time.

I'm thinking of going back to work on Monday, that will help me take my mind off it a little, and as luck has it I'm working about two miles away from the hospital, so I could visit straight after work.

mine was an industrial injury kenbo, a collapsed disc at c4/5 partially severed my spinal cord leaving me partially paraplegic. Fortunately my respiratory system suffered no affects it's just waist down and arms.

kenbo - is there any idea of how long the trach will be in? Hank Jr used a speech valve which he had to build up tolerance with.

Isn't marvelous that there are people on here, to, not only to share experiences etc, but also able to give advice that may actually help ( especially  the 2nd 3rd opinions and a consultant who could even help).  I am putting more money on recovery now - odds looking better every day!!!

best wishes

Hey kenvil - hope you and your lad are good. I have to echo what kenvil says about time for yourself kenbo. I spend time at my allotment, and without that time I would be mental - though some would argue that I already am! Laugh

Your Wife is in good hands at the L.R.I. they worked wonders on my brother for 16 hours after his hand was 6cm from being totally severed. Attaching nerves and blood vessels etc.
Wish you and Tracey a positive outcome, hopefully her spirit proves the Doctors wrong.
I hope the "Big Guy" in heaven is looking down on all these thoughts and prayers.
Best Wishes.

Kenbo in case you might find it helpful I have dropped a link in to Mr Sell. He works privately from the Nuffield in Leicester but also at the Royal Infirmary so I guess you will run in to him anyway.Best wishes to you.

Nice one Dobbo, Betfair trying to restrict people from posting. But when someone needs some Critical advice the collective is greater than the one. Not to mention anyone else who has posted advice and knowledge.
Trolls really have restricted others being able to join, who knows what they could have told us.

BB. I had no idea about your injuries, yet I have conversed with you many times. You are my new inspiration. Happy

Hank. We are still unsure how long the trach will be in for. What I do know is that she managed to breathe by herself for 20 mins yesterday, which again was great news. They started her off on 75% oxygen when it first happened, and overnight they have again reduced it from 55% to 50%, so things are heading in the right direction. Happy

P.H. The staff at L.R.I have been truly fantastic, we always hear about how stretched the N.H.S budget is, yet I think at least a dozen doctors have been involved in her case. She is assigned a nurse purely to look after her 24 hours a day, and this is split between just two nurses working twelve hour days each. They are all remarkable people.

Dobbo. Thanks for link and your help yet again. I have rang the number from the website, and I have to phone back tomorrow to speak to his secretary. His face didn't look familiar to me but as I said above there has been so many people involved in helping her out.

Sorry that I'm not replying to each and every one of your well wishes personally, but please keep them coming. Thank you yet again.

A very positive visit again today. She has a bit more movement in her right hand, and she also has a good bit of movement in her right ankle too. Her oxygen intake is now at 45% so everything is heading the right direction.

She is so determined to beat this. HappyHappy

A quick update. A blood clot in her chest/lungs area has caused her spine to have stroke. We don't know what caused it but I have my suspicions. Tracey started HRT twenty days before all this happened, and on Sunday night I found her perscription containing the pills. On the information leaflet, under possible side effects were POSSIBLE BLOOD CLOTS TO THE LEGS AND LUNGS, and STROKE. Now I'm aware that all medicines have these written on them, but this seems quite a coincidence to me.

Anyway, she now has a fair bit more movement in her right hand, and when I bend her arm at the elbow for her, she can straighten it up herselfHappy. Today the physio sat her up in bed and Tracey managed to maintain the position herself for a few seconds. Her oxygen intake is now at 30% but it is leaving her exhausted doing a large proportion of the breathing herself.

The change in a week has given us all so much hope. HappyHappyHappy

This improvement seems really positive s.k. Long may it continue.

It might be worth talking to her GP and even the Manufacturers of the HRT, when you get the time, just to see if there's any further advice they can offer. At least it would also give them a better idea of what harm their drugs can do, if it is they that are responsible.

I have took the tablets to the hospital for the doctors to have a look at.

Very true mange, knowing what might have caused it would help. I've been thinking all kinds of things, from helping me loading out bricks in the garden, walking the dog, or us even moving house and lifting boxes.

Thanks again all. HappyHappyHappy
