There will never be corporal punishment, was just an excuse for weak adults who couldn't control kids that was back in the 80's I have two kids now and I teach them to share and have empathy for people,i could never imagine hitting my kids they just aren't capable of doing anything that bad.If you can't deal with your kids without hitting them you must be pretty pathetic,if you bring them up right and pay them enough attention and interest from when they're first born there's no way they will be wild as they get older. My mum and dad used to smack me quite regularly but for things that didn't warrant it,think parents from that era did it quite a lot but that was the way they were brought up laziness not taking enough interest in their own kids.Last time my dad did that was when I was 15 I told him if he ever touched me again i'd knock his phucking head off,see how he liked it.Wink

WHY ?, because some get nurtured loved and listened to, and the rest have a plastic life, not the kids fault, BUT , they have the plastic genes .

It's a quandary for sure! I've done a complete U turn on this. My Mum used to regularly beat the crap out of me with a riding crop, to the extent that by the time I was about 10 or 11, it was no longer a threat, and I'd laugh in her face. I only once gave my boy any sort of whack on his arse that he felt, and I felt terrible afterwards, and vowed never to do it again, and I haven't. I'd still not think twice about cracking heads for any adults that deserved it and the stage for talking has passed, but physical punishment of kids under the age of say 13-14 is wrong, because it is such a miss match, and sends out the wrong message.

I remember one thrashing I got from "the old dear" saying "I am only doing this because I love you, so you don't run riot like the ba5tards across the road".
Maternal love you can't beat it.
The best bit, she was 100%  correct.

What a stupid point sheppy

There are a lot of perverted teachers who would love nothing more than to whip a young schoolboy or girl, it would be a perk of their job,

second, today is very multi cultural, do you think people from all different walks of life would tolerate that - not only would their probably stab the teacher to death before they would allow themselves to face the shame and embarrassment of their mates taking the piss but their parents would probably come rushing round waving all sorts of religious texts about

Teachers would live in fear, gangs would find but where they live which in today's day and age is not exactly hard, and take revenge, maybe on their family too, set the house on fire etc. I could envisage kids ambushing teachers on the way home, beating the sh1t out of him and filming it, putting it on to youtube for all to see for the rest of his days - all sorts of repercussions,

A teacher at my school once grabbed someone by the back of the collar in the corridor after he was messing about, he swung around and smacked the teacher in the face, and he deserved it, you don't man handle hyperactive kids you're asking for it, fight fire with fire you;ll get burned.

Those that want to use the cane - it's a sign they have no control or they've lost control, they have no respect from the kids, you'll find the classes where there is less trouble in are the ones where the teacher commands the most respect from the way they hold themselves, from the way they treat the kids, using physical force to instil discipline is a massive sign of weakness on the teachers part,

Punishment will come in the form of long term prospects, the kids who refuse to learn and cause trouble will be the ones stuck in job centres their whole life blaming everyone else for their problems, that's the punishment.

Problem is, people that want to use a cane are driven by short termism and probably have anger issues themselves, not to mention being stuck in the past. it's 2013, they always has and always will be unruly kids for whatever reason, beating them is not going to change anything , it will make things worse not better

Teachers have to realise - you have to earn respect not ask for it. shouting and beating doesn't do that, it comes from good communication skills, you don;t treat every kid the same, you get to know their personality and learn how to handle each kid differently.

IMVHAHO.

No. From Day 1, a teacher should have to lose the kids respect, not gain it.

most teachers dont deserve respect. none of mine did. all they did was tell us all how useless we were and how we would never achieve anything. most of em were utterly clueless about the real world. just sat in their poncey office judging kids who didn't even know who they were yet.

those who can, do. those who can't, teach.

the one i got all the time was "your gce's/gcse's (whatever they were called then) will determine your entire life" yeah right. whatever. i left school at 15, never took any exams. went to college, dropped out cos i hated it. eventually sorted myself out and got a degree. it didn't turn out to be much use, cos i started my own business. earning more than any of my old teachers ever did, i'm sure.

the thought that some easy, widely passed by any fool and relatively pointless exams at 16 determine your entire life is frankly utterly absurd. most kids reach 20 and haven't the faintest idea where their life is going to lead.

Haha! Do you guys ever go to bed!!!Laugh

So it seems that most people aren't in favour of it, saying that it doesn't do any good or makes things worse etc.

I understand that compared to the pain some kids go through at home the cane would seem like being hit with polystyrene etc. but no system is perfect is it???

I think though that overall it would be a good thing. If it stops just 10% of kids from wagging it etc. it'd be worth it.

I'm looking forward to my next load of stick!Laugh

Sheppy

So you want to recreate a more violent society for the vast majority of kidsjust so thatyou would stop 10% from wagging it?

I prefer the present situation where the unruly kids can be obnoxious to their teachers and to each other verbally but not physically assault others because it is deemed unacceptable.

Bringing back the cane will just create more violent and bigger monsters like the criminals of the olden times.

We live in a more benign and better society and we should not encourage children/future adults to resolve their conflicts through violence like we did before.

I haven't read through this so it may have been mentioned but in Scotland we had 'the belt',a leather strap which was  applied to the hands, even to young primary school children. In my very first year at school I have recollections of a 5 year old being locked into a window less stationary cupboard for some supposed misbehaviour.Personaly,I was once punched very hard in the solar plexus for no particular by our PE teacher,a very sadistic bastard who played for the Huns when they got to the European Cup winners Cup final.

I don't believe the cane will encourage more acts of violence. We've got Grand Theft Auto to do that!

It will help to control unruly kids.

iamajambo - I agree that some teachers abused corporal punishment, and I had my fair share of it too!

My maths teacher nearly pulled my ear off by dragging me around the classroom holding it!

I think the cane should come back, but with some rules applied to it.

WALOFS some of you lot talk. I got caned on the arse at Grammar School, 6 of the very best, for going onto the school roof to get the ball back. It was only the headmaster (or deputy head) who dished out this punishment, the rest of the teachers all had their own unique ways of dealing with unruly boys (was an all boys school). I remember the headmaster's words before the first thrash nigh on sizzled my buttcheeks off.."This is going to hurt me far more than it's going to hurt you"...the jury is still out on that one.

It never did me any harm and I didn't dare go back on the roof again...I bore no malice towards the Head teacher and didn't harbour thoughts of slashing him or attacking him...it was part of school life, just take your punishment and move on. Unruly kids today are on a par with criminals, more rights than those who toe the line and behave. Cane the little b'stards is what I say.

Nice one Petrus.

For me, 100 lines or an hours detention would've meant more visits to the roof.

Call me a wimp but I really feared the cane at school. When it was abolished I was faced with 2 options...

1) Have a great afternoon playing computer games by a nice warm fire with my mates.

2) Have a really boring history lesson, followed by an extremely tedius geography lesson.

I chose option 1 at least once a week cos a 10 minute lecture etc. seemed really worth it!

I truly regret it now, but as a kid I didn't see the benefits. Manic Minor was much more beneficial!Laugh
