I never had the cane but it didn't worry me at all.
How painful can it be? Much rather the cane than a trip to the dentist tbh |

If a teacher caned me,I'd slash them once I left school

xmoney - now that's interesting. It's changed my views slightly!
One of the great things about starting a debate like this is that it helps me to see the whole picture. I've had these "cane" thoughts for many years, and I've always been convinced that it needs to come back. |

I was caned at junior and senior school. So were girls if they badly misbehaved.
Equality, love it. |

**** headmaster misjudged mine and broke my thumb

The cane worked that's all there is to say about it really.
I agree with sheppy123, without discipline most kids don't achieve their potential. That's why so many employers won't even consider employing any of today's kids. |

no fear so it is ok to do ANYTHING - obvious to me.

Spare a thought for the cane makers!
The "bottom" fell out of the industry over night! I wonder from where did these canes come and how did the school acquire them! I mean they couldn't buy them on the internet (in my day), and it wouldn't be worth it for a rep to tour the country, for a possible order of one cane now and again! I would think that once a school had one it would serve for many years! I really believe that those that administered this ritual just had to be masochistic b@stards! I got six just once, at Grammar School (apologies to the member who thinks I shouldn't say GS) and I didn't do anything to deserve it! I think I was in the second year and some bullies threw me into a three foot snow drift. As I climbed out I threw a handful of ineffective snow, at the perpetrators, and was immediately set upon by the Nazi prefects! |

our heads cane had a metal insert spliced into the end of it. That way he got more whacko effect with it but it was the metal insert that connected with my thumb.

Cane a bit outdated now
Should be the taser |
|

Hit with canes, shoes and had head yanked back and forward like a rag doll by teachers. My friend got punched in the stomach by one.
Still think canes should be used to teach discipline. Some psycho teachers can take it a bit far though. |

Got the slipper and the pump several times, but never the cane.
I remember the games teacher saying I was gonna be punished for messing out during cricket. When we got back, I got dressed in record time and was out of there ASAP! Unfortunately, during my next lesson an ugly looking pupil turned up saying that the games teacher wanted to see me. I'd seen him wallop other boys so I knew was I was in for damn it! ![]() |

There's no doubt that many teachers enjoyed dishing it out. It was a powerful tool in the wrong hands in many cases.
It certainly made teaching easier than it is today. Nevertheless I think standards of behaviour amongst people have dropped since it was abolished. A necessary evil sums it up for me. |

I remember some teachers asking the class for one of their pumps so they could hit somebody.
It didn't go down too well with your mate who was being clobbered with your shoe! ![]() |

Dr Crippen...
Yes I think you're right there. There was one teacher that I really believe was a gay paedophile. He used to tell you to bend over and touch your toes whilst he spanked you. It was always boys, never the girls. At the time I didn't think anything of it. I remember thinking at the time that his mannerism's were a bit strange and he wasn't quite right. I guess that in the 70s you could get away with things much easier. I still say though that they should bring the cane back. |
|
By:
didn't you think it strange when he whispered "I love you" in your ear?
|
|
By:
It was even stranger when he said "What are you doing tonight?"

Sadly, we are way past bringing it back....Can you imagine if it were bought back now? The parents, in some cases are as bad as the pupils. Everyone has 'rights' now and litigation would be all over the place. You can't smack your own child, so what about someone else doing it?
I just watched 'educating Yorkshire'... edited cleverly but these pupils are doing what they like and the teachers just fire fighting. Many children these days lack the empathy that perhaps used to be there. I worry that we are going to run out of people that want to teach and where will we be then? I work in a prep school and my job is 'easy' compared to those that do their job, particularly in secondary state schools and I take my hat off to them but that would not be my choice. My daughter started an ofsted otstanding secondary school this term and my God ( her coming as a pupil from my school)it has been a baptism of fire for her. She cried herself to sleep on Monday night but that is life and whilst I love her as much as I do, it will, I hope 1) make her realise how lucky she has been to be educated privately for the first years of her life and 2) what the real world can be like. I still think she is lucky being in the school she got in to. |

Fair point. But what is???? And there is the question of how some of these pupils get some respect for society. What would you do HRH? |
|
By:
Sadly, I don't know, pauly.
The generation of parents that think a teachers remit reaches beyond imparting anything educational are a cracking advert for a spot of ethnic cleansing. |
|
By:
If your teenage daughter got thrashed on the bare buttocks by the headmaster,
I would hazard a guess that your stance on this subject would drastically change. |
|
By:
I got the cane a good few times, I wasn't an unruly pupil just stood up for myself against the hierarchy which invariably ended up with 6 of the best
It was no big deal really. |

Zilzal, I used to come home and tell Dad I got the cane today. He said did you deserve it? Usually I did but for nothing much really, it was a very strict school and that was no bad thing whatsoever.

Kids who got canned regularly turned out to be in the main the lunatics that left school becoming violent as adults or criminals the cane was no deterrent to the nutters,i went to a rough school in the punk era and half the nutters were giving the teachers a hiding! It was a regular occurrence going to school in first year getting a dead arm or leg or stabbed with a compass happy days eh!!

School I went to was mental nearly everyone was bullied or get their luch money scaved off them by the nutcases, canes a waste of time you get people saying you can't blame the parents. All the kids who were doing the bullying were mainly from poor backgrounds came to school in rags parents obviously treated them like **** they were always the kids that had no pe kit no lunch money. They were usually scrounging or bullying so they could get a bag of chips from the chippy,it's total neglect from people who shouldn't be having kids probably find their mums and dads p1ssing their money down the pub instead of giving their kids a bit of lunch money or a sandwich!!

Caning children is a ridiculous idea. State sanctioned cruelty against children in 2013? Surely we can be a bit more civilised than that? If you're saying our society is crying out for more disciplined children, I totally agree, but caning is just cruelty/violence, simple was that.

*simple as that, I meant.
