the entire Man City team from about a decade ago who in the last five minutes of the season at 2-2 played the ball into the corners in the mistaken belief they needed a draw to avoid relegation.

Also, Chris Waddle

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned and I have missed it but the guy who missed the penalty kick right in front of the posts in a 1960's Rugby League Challenge Cup Final. Don't know his name but I'd bet that missed kick is almost all of us have ever seen of him...

Yes Don Fox, was mentioned , unbelievable.

Couldn't have Waddle , had a great career, would be remembered anyway.

Quite a few of the people mentioned do not fit into the theme. Failure though it undoubtedly was, I suspect the reputation of Sir Donald Bradman has survived the second ball duck in his final Test.

WE have different understandings of the thread title then, I'm sure if 100 people were asked to to associate one word with Chris Waddle quite a few would say 'penalty'.

For the record I think he was one of the best players we've produced in the last 25 years.

MC560 , yes , true , it's probably the 1st thing people would associate him with.

But, if that had never happened he would be just as recognisable to any football fan aged 30+

People like Van De Velde ,Don Fox ,Southgate would be remembered by about 3% of the people who do remember them if they hadn't fkd up

Dorando Pietro is a good shout in endurance circles but possibly even a better one was Julie Moss in the 82 Iron Man at Kona. At that time it was a very new niche event and her efforts in finishing the race on her hands and knees despite being passed for first place yards from the end inspired a generation of ultra competitors:

Liverpool or Spurs - I forget. Missed when it would have been much easier to score.

Eddie the Eagle the best one here. Most of these at least can point to something resembling an achievement, but ETE was just shoite and made plenty out of being a failure. His best moment was  being revealed as the plasterer on one of Nick Knowles house do up shows. That, for an Olympic Athlete is not great

I watched that Baseball documentary also . Never seen anyone look so mortified as Bartman ,just excruciating to see him sitting there so meekly as the game continued Cry The programme was sympathetic to him but i think making it just makes an ever bigger deal of the thing so probably not gonna help him out . Quite striking how Americans mythologize their Sporting events so there has to be a hero , a villain and a precise moment of fate/destiny that decided the whole thing on it's own.

Buckner certainly qualifies for the thread criteria .Felt sorry for him too Sad

David flapper Seaman is a shocking omission.

A barely competent keeper chiefly remembered for the look of anguished puzzlement on his face just after Nayim (from the halfway line) had done him.

Glenn Hoddle really should count for the whole Eileen Drewery thing, but then of course he's also renown for his comments about the disabled, dropping Gazza, not picking Le Tiss and generally being one of the biggest ****s on the planet.
