As the war in  Afghanistan finally draws to a close, - time to reflect!

Which/what is the greatest anti- war song?

For my money its – 'The Green Fields of France', makes Lennon’s 'Happy Christmas War is Over'   sound mundane and ineffectual! ( Lennon wasn't thinking ahead of his time with his politically incorrect assumption that Christianity is applicable to the ,majority of people on the planet).

There are many different versions of 'Green Fields of France'. The American Version is particularly interesting along with the photo's on You Tube. There is a British/German duet, - again with great photo's, but the one I like best is the Scottish version performed by the  Furies and Davey Arthur.

A close runner up is a similar song 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' and a great Aussie song in the same vane about the Battle of Gallipoli.

You do of course need to be in the right mood to listen!

Non musicians like Burton B, are always resentful that working class folk can produce great art -  they think we should all be down on our knees giving our masters a good shoe shine - and any extra's!

Socialism was and is your salvation - and dont you forget it boy!

BB, can't see the harm in posting my admiration for one of the greatest anti-war songs ever written:

Well, how do you do, Private William McBride,
Do you mind if I sit down here by your graveside?
And rest for awhile in the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day, and I'm nearly done.

And I see by your gravestone you were only 19
When you joined the glorious fallen in 1916,
Well, I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean
Or, Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene?

chorus: Did they Beat the drum slowly, did the play the pipes lowly?
Did the rifles fir o'er you as they lowered you down?
Did the bugles sound The Last Post in chorus?
Did the pipes play the Flowers of the Forest?

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some loyal heart is your memory enshrined?
And, though you died back in 1916,
To that loyal heart are you always 19?

Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Forever enshrined behind some glass pane,
In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,
And fading to yellow in a brown leather frame?

The sun's shining down on these green fields of France;
The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance.
The trenches have vanished long under the plow;
No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now.

But here in this graveyard that's still No Man's Land
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man.
And a whole generation who were butchered and damned.

And I can't help but wonder, no Willie McBride,
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you 'The Cause?'
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?

Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain,
For Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again, and again, and again, and again.

watch the latest news coming out if you think I am mad !!  See how the lies northern lad has been spewing out along with his political masters for 12 years.  Then call me a fruit cake.  He can't even get facts right about what he said about me so how can you trust him to be truthful about anything.  He simply dodges the issue, disappears for a few days hoping it will be forgotten then starts up his attention seeking new topics  ha ha

I murder hate, by field or flood,

Tho' glory's name may screen us;

In wars at hame I'll spend my blood,

Life-giving wars of Venus.

The deities that I adore,

Are social peace and plenty;

I'm better pleas'd to make one more,

Than be the death o' twenty.

Yes Muntz, but TGFOF is actually called 'No Man's Land.' Both great songs, especially when it isn't Bogle singing them!

I remember attending a Labour party do I the mid eighties and Tony & Cherie Blair were there, - this before he became a leading figure.
At  the end everybody started singing including Cherie. I was stood just a few feet away and have to say she looks a lot better in the flesh than on TV or in the media.

“Fweeeeeeeeeee Nelson Mandelaaaaaaa,
Fweeeeeeeeeeee Nelson Mandeleeeeeer!
Fweeeeeeeeee.......................”

She tried to sing but sounded god damn awful,  bless her!
