I didn't bother, I saw a bit of the first series, a bit of idiot abroad and a stand up of his and generally found him to be more annoying than funny.
In addition the weekly podcast on media events has a few minutes at the end talking about what's coming in telly, this was completely slaughtered. |

Thought the pilot was miles funnier, but I'll stick with it for a while cos I see the bigger picture. He's obviously trying to make a star out of Kerry Godliman which is fair enough.
Pilkington never changes, which is fair play, getting plenty to be yourself. |

I missed the first series but watched it the last night and enjoyed it. Warming and funny, I liked it.

Given how much the Yanks love him, it's a bit hard to see how fame and money are his main motivations for this. I'd guess it's social commentary and...making people laugh but I'll have a look first before deciding.

There was no 'first series' - just a pilot show.
It is social commentary (that's the bigger picture) - he's not picking fun at old people. Pilkington's speech/observation of the gov.inspector was brilliant. |

I can appreciate it's appeal to some folks but it's not a programme I would care to watch again pesronally. Gervais doesn't need the money most definitely and recently said he has over 4 million followers on Twitter so doesn't need the ratings either as he can post his shows on line. Fair play to him I say but 'Derek' is not for me.

Wholly unrealistic imo, just watched it on 4od. I know it was comedy, but it was comedy masquerading as some kind of social commentary, nothing dubious, or worthy of much thought, the pantomime villain that was the guy from the council guy, the bloke who was drinking special brew in the care home give me a break, my mum worked in care homes and someone drinking cans of special brew wouldnt get through the front gates, even as a genuine visitor, and they were making out he could get in bed naked with a resident and the resident was fine with it, have a day off. Gervais' character just doesnt work either, the constant gurning is again unrealistic. Dougie is of course good as gold, and the woman in charge, well there are thousands of people like her all over the country and she was at least a believable character, not an abject failure, but certainly disappointing, and not very funny.

Unlikely, but we will see. That bloke in bed naked with the old girl just made it seem too ridiculous to be taken seriously as a social commentary effort, or "purveying" anything anything clever.

My mum worked in a care home too. She was presumably one of the best workers as she was often left in charge, but she often returned home with some pretty grim tales, and, and this made me rather uncomfortable, funny stories of what the residents had been up to. I've no doubt Rob's mum was an excellent care worker, and things may have changed in the last ten years, but so far as I could tell, the standards were set pretty low.

I am living with two carers atm, they are good as gold. Pretty sure that they wouldnt suffer someone sitting there all day drinking special brew and they aint managers afaik. Maybe facts has a point and the whole point of the ahow has gone over my head, but at least try and make the point semi-realistically, might as well have been written by Polly Toynbee.

Reminds me of the daily mail's constant attacks on the NHS... Is their intention to highlight the deficiencies in the system and try to improve it, or just to get people to think what is the point of the NHS, let us just sack it off.

It's an appropriate time perhaps, given the news today re Stafford Hospital. There are all sorts of people, including carers, but also nurses, policeman, ,teachers, and even politicians, who earn less than the importance and value of their jobs. This is because we want people in such positions to be motivated by a desire to help the community, rather than by financial gain. In each case there are Florence Nightingales, the otherwise unemployable, and the utter power-hungry bastards. I've no problem at all believing your housemates fall in the first category Rob, I just query the system's ability to prevent the latter two also gaining employment.
