Tough one this, but have to go for the last few years in tennis. Watching the best 4 male tennis players ever, all play at the same time against each other has just been simply magnificent.

The original panache and dominance of Fed, the emergence of Rafa and his incredible development form clay to hard court and then grass.  Then Djokovic and his incredible 2011 performance when he lifted capability and consistency to the highest level ever.  And now, maybe the final chapter as Murray may even trump them all (but lots and lots to prove).

Long may these rivalries continue.

In the flesh, a couple of League Cup Finals in the 90's, but mostly racing: Best Mate's 3rd Gold Cup, Peintre Celebre's Arc, One Man's Sandown King George and later Champion Chase (real lump in throat time, loved the horse). Was good to see Frankel's last race too.

The first Cheltenham I had to miss for 7 or 8 years had the Edredon Bleu v Direct Route Champion Chase, one of, if not the best finish ever.

On TV, Red Rum's third National footage still reminds me how I got fascinated in the first place. Hagler v Hearns, Headingley in 81, France V West Germany in 82, Benn v McClellan are a few that spring to mind.

A few in the flesh my first Cheltenham Gold Cup, also Best Mate's 3rd CGC, seeing the ball come in my direction (admittedly I was a long way up) and nestle into the corner of the net when Sniffer scored the goal, seeing Mark Viduka scoring all the goals in the 4-3 win was good but to then watch him getting his MOM after a delay of about 1/2 hour due to worldwide TV interviews then signing autographs for about the same length of time (he shook everyones hand & said thank you after he had signed What a top man!)

Crash at the first corner caused a re-start but the officials wouldn't let James Hunt restart as they said he hadn't copmpleted the first lap. There was nearly a riot as me,and 100.000 other fans started chanting "we want Hunt". Fearing trouble, the stewards allowed him to race, and Hunt went on to win after Lauda retired. We were sorting out our placepots and my brother said to me did I want to go halves on his which came to £128. I had already done mine and said no. Anyway, I got busted on my perm and after the last race we were in the tote queue in the rain to pick his ticket up. At the time he nor I had any idea what the dividend was when the tote girl said those immortal words,"do you want cash or a cheque." We looked at each other and started laughing, he said cash please and she paid him just under 5 grand. Here's my random top ten sporting events:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In recent years, the highlight of my sporting life has to be the last day of the 2005 Ashes series.

I am a huge cricket fan, but as I am also a fúcking idiot I missed out on Ashes tickets for the first four days of all five Tests cos they'd gone on sale in October and November 2004 and I didn't realise.

Luckily, the Oval (for the first time) were selling fifth-day tickets for £10 each, in January 2005. I bought ten, sold four on eBay for £35 each (while the Oval were still selling them for £10 each, amazingly!) and pretty much forgot about them. Then it all came down to that day.

And that day (September 12, 2005 - I don't need to look it up) had it all. One of the greatest days in English sporting history. All I would say about the day that you lot will not know is that I am on TV - cowering (and kicking over a freshly-poured pint) as my mate two seats down from me drops one of Kevin Pietersen's sixes!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I was also at the following genuinely great occasions:

:: Everton 4 Liverpool 4 in 1991. Everton trailed four times and came back four times. Dalglish quit two days later. Incredible.
:: Australia v South Africa's tied Cricket World Cup semi-final in 1999. I was in the press box, and when the game ended (with a chaotic run out) and Australia celebrated getting through to the final, all of us in the press box knew they'd won, but no one knew why they'd won!!!
:: France beating New Zealand in the 1999 Rugby Union World Cup semi-final - though as a gorgeous girl I'd been chasing for six months had finally noshed me off the night before, I wasn't that bothered Laugh
:: Shane Warne's "Ball of the Century" against Mike Gatting. Gatting couldn't believe he'd been bowled. He had to be (almost literally) dragged off the pitch. I can still hear the gasp that went round the ground when the replay was shown on the big screen.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

And these few events mean a lot to me:

:: Everton beating Manchester United in the 2009 FA Cup semi-final.
:: Everton beating Watford in the 1984 FA Cup final. I was seven years old at the time and I still remember my dad comforting two Watford fans in front of us who were crying. "It's OK - you'll win something soon." He was a lying bástard.
:: Everton winning the league in 1985 by beating QPR 2-0. If only I'd known back then that my team wasn't going to win a trophy almost every season!
:: Albertas Run winning the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham in 2010. I had unbelievably bad luck in my first few visits to a horse racing track - I didn't back a winner in any of my first four meetings - so when Albertas Run went up that hill and my 14/1 bet copped, I felt amazing. Goosebump-tastic.
:: Burnham 2 Canvey Island 1 - FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay, November 2005. Burnham were three divisions below Conference club Canvey, but they got a 1-1 draw there. In the replay, Burnham came from behind to be level at 1-1 at half time, then they got a man sent off for a second yellow 20 seconds into the second half. Burnham, amazingly, held their own and launched an attack in the 90th minute. They got into the Canvey box, their centre-back dived in, the Burnham striker was clattered, penalty given, penalty deposited into the top corner, final whistle, celebrations. The first time Burnham had got to the FA Cup first round. A special moment.

Real boys own stuff.

On TV it would be the Spurs vs Arsenal Cup Semi in 1991, not just because we won playing the best football I've ever seen us play, but because we were going out of business or Maxwell was going to take us over and Arsenal were going for the Double again and were red hot favourites.

Excellent thread. Made me think back over the years and so (on a slightly lower level than a lot on here):

Live - West Ham 1 Aston Villa 0, FA Cup 1/4 final, Upton Park, March 1980. Second division West Ham against First Division Villa dominated but just coudn't score. However, with no more than a few minutes left, Ray Stewart bangs home a penalty after an obvious handball in the Villa box. As well as the massive excitement, it was the last game I ever saw at Upton Park with my dear old dad...and I'd had £10 on Hammers at 13/8 in 90 minutes!!

(BTW, for those that don't realise it, West Ham still remain the last side playing outside of the top flight of English football to win the FA Cup - 33 years ago!)

TV - So many, but an an 8 year old sitting up late and watching on our black and white TV Bob Beaman's long jump world record in Mexico 1968 sticks in the mind. Christ, he broke the old record by so far it was almost spooky and it was presented on TV that way as well!

I suppose that would have to be football or tennis.

Andy Murray destroying Federer to win Gold at Wimbledon or his US Slam win. Both were brilliant moments, just to shut the haters up.

Or, in football, probably the greatest moment was when Germany beat England 4-2, with Lampard´s goal being chalked off to right a wrong from yesteryear...sweet.

Great stuff eaglewardy, good to know a fellow Betfair man was at Anfield that unforgettable night. I wasn't at Villa Park but that was an incredible game and like you say we got our revenge in no uncertain manner. Ian Wright started out playing for my local club Dulwich Hamlet by the way, what a find he turned out to be Happy

I was at the S.C.G. when Brian Lara scored his 277, I have never seen a better batting performance like it in all my years and one of the best test series I've ever seen. Curtley Ambrose won player of the series, he was absolutely magnificent as well.

Slippy, our paths may have crossed many times then if you went to see a lot of games. After I left school in 86 I went all over watching the Palace til I moved abroad in 98.Was totally hooked from the first game my old man took me to in 79.Usual fortnightly routine was the palace home game then off to catford dogs, those were the days.
