I was only 13 , but my Dad took me to the 1976 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. Crash at the first corner caused a re-start but the officials wouldn't let James Hunt restart as they said he hadn't copmpleted the first lap. There was nearly a riot as me,and 100.000 other fans started chanting "we want Hunt". Fearing trouble, the stewards allowed him to race, and Hunt went on to win after Lauda retired. Hunt was disqualified 2 months later after an appeal by Ferrari, but I have never experienced atmosphere like it since (and I was at Best Mates 3rd Gold Cup, and Desert Orchids last King George) Can't wait till next year when Ron Howards film RUSH, about the 1976 F1 season hits the big screen.
And I was 12 and there with my Dad too!! Just remember the crowd going nuts on a boiling hot day and the incredible noise of the engines. Fantastic stuff. Went the following year too when Hunt won for real.
It was just a great night in the end.
- the rest of it was amazing though
