As an aside I was in the royal Marines and was honoured to be part of the first non Scottish regiment to do the Edinburgh castle guard

its heartbreaking, topshot we are all happy that our sons returned safe,yet inside my heart weeps for his family.he must have been a top lad only young and already an officer.

I would of thought after two tours the regiment won't have to return back there?

I was lucky when I joined up, the world seemed a much safer place than it is now, so I really admire our young men (and girls) who join up knowing they are almost certainly going to war

tell me about it ,this weekend has fell unbelievable,we are from sheffield and i start a new job on monday in glenrothes so i have decided to stay up here instead of going home, rest of my clan gone back home, cant even hit the river ouse with my son tonight gutted really, but just over the moon hes home safe

Angel this thread is not about the rights or wrongs about joining the armed forves,it is about a parents joy that their son has survived the turmoils of entering a threate of war and coming out unscathed.

cant say i blame you angel,but they are young men and i cant influence what he wants to do,i wasnt exactly jumping through hoops when he told me

As you said the theatre of war. I have always been bothered by that phrase. It sounds like  powerful businessmen watching a performance of battle being played out for their own entertainment and benefit.

^ Angel I am glad you took aboard my point about the emotional ties between father and son that this thread was all about,you take me to task about using the phrase "theatre of war" as a ex-soldier I feel I am qualified to use that terminolgy as most civilians do not have the stomach for the harsh realitys of picking up your mates legs because he has stood on a landmine etc.

sorry i didnt reply last night slippy to your post,i had such an emotional and exhausting day that i just crashed woke up middle of night computer on telly still blaring out, then again probably the best nights kip i had in 3 yrs,what with all the sons shenanigans.Anyhow i remember slippys exploits well , iwas well into greyhound racing then and must have owned about 10 of my own in and around that era i had some decent graders and minor open winners but none in slippys class he was top of the pile , probaly cant blame cannylad either 5k was a lot to pay in those days for adog my biggest outlay was 1k same time, he must have put in a big run in that a5 to command such a big price,another thing i find astounding is the price 20s to 8 on the day of the race for an hound of his calibre ,hindsight a wonderfull thing but the big firms would never price a dog of his status in a race today at such ridiculous odds, slppy was certainly 1 of the best dogs i ever saw,others were, bob,and scurlogue  and desert pilot was a monster too and i loved westmead hawk the way he won was just phenomenal
