nothing that happened before the fight (as none of it was illegal) matters in the guilt or innocence of Zimmerman. Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman and beating him. Zimmerman has the right to defend himself with a gun under Florida law.

No he does not. As ICS posted, the legislators who proposed the 'Stand Your Ground' Law ,envisaged it as something that people  who were minding their own business could call upon if they were confronted by someone who was threatening them.

Zimmerman was not minding his own business, quite the reverse.

We will find out. I am sure the lawyers on both sides will battle this out.

given that sugar is more addictive than coccaine, and Trayvon was meeting a dealer, we can safely assume this was a drug deal gone wrong.

Having read quite a few of these posts I find myself wondering about one or two things.
Firstly: How was the visibility. Just how much faith can you have in the description that "The guy who was on top was now laying on his back".
Secondly: Did the young black fella show signs of having been beaten up?
Thirdly: Who called for help? Was it Zimmerman or the black fella?
Fourthly: Do any of the witnesses know the parties involved on a personal level?
And lastly, but not leastly: What does the forensic evidence say?

Then we might have enough info to start to consider if the media are on the right track or not.

case is at best involuntary manslaughter.
around 8000 african americans firearm deaths annually, including (approx) 7000 homicides, 100 legal interventions, 1000 suicides.
well over 50 percent of homicides (some stats report 85 percent firearm homicide) are african american despite being around 15 percent of population.

Then we might have enough info to start to consider if the media are on the right track or not.
that this story was plucked out of obscurity in an election year should tell which track the media are on.

Just to clarify,

So a neighbourhood watch bloke starts following a stranger and harrassing him.
Said stranger tries to defend himself against the stalker.
Stalker shoots the stranger.

or

Neighbourhood watch guy is attacked by stranger.
shoots him in self defence.

Correct?

(sorry, can'y open any of the links)

if it's anything like in this country the 911 operator would have been a police officer... I don't know if it's the same there though

Outsourced...

You get a 60 year old grandmother living in Delhi, and she doesn't like blacks.

Yes, he was beaten white and blue.

I must confess that I assumed we were talking about the reaction of the British media, not the local interpretation of events.

It doesn't seem to show much effort on the part of the police to determine whether or not a crime has been committed.

I can't open the links, either.

So just to get this straight Helissio, is it the media coverage you're unhappy with, or the fact that so many people seem to think that Zimmerman should be brought to book? You sound as if you think he is innocent?

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/zimmerman-attorney-to-anderson-cooper-trayvon-martin-broke-my-clients-nose/

His attorney, Craig Sonner, finally spoke out to Anderson Cooper(CNN) last night, and had few answers but one accusation– his client has a broken nose and a laceration on his skull, and that was “an injury done by Trayvon Martin.”

I am not sure why the media keep referring to the "stand your ground law".

Based on what I have read, this is a case of simple self defense. Zimmerman was knocked to the ground and was being beaten up. He had a gun, which he used to defend himself.

Neighbour saw it all and has already stated Zimmerman was assaulted and acted in self-defence,did'nt seem to affect Obama giving a speech in front of the white house though.

Obama has form in putting his nose into police matters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Louis_Gates_arrest_controversy

On July 16, 2009, Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., was arrested at his Cambridge, Massachusetts home by a local police officer responding to a 9-1-1 caller's report of men breaking and entering the residence. The arrest initiated a series of events that unfolded under the spotlight of the international news media.

Obama replied, "Now, I've – I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home. And number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact."

Obama's remarks sparked a reaction from law-enforcement professionals. James Preston, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Florida State Lodge, stated: "To make such an off-handed comment about a subject without benefit of the facts, in such a public forum, hurts police/community relations and is a setback to all of the years of progress". Preston further warned that "by reducing all contact between law enforcement and the public to the color of their skin or ethnicity is, in fact, counter-productive to improving relationships".

Another side of the story is coming out:

http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-trayvon-martin-case-20120326,0,4845076.story

Zimmerman was heading to the grocery store when he spotted Martin and called police to report a black youth acting suspiciously, possibly on drugs.

Zimmerman stepped out of his SUV to follow Martin, even though a police dispatcher told him he didn't need to do so.

Zimmerman told police he he'd lost sight of Martin and was heading back to his car when the youth suddenly stepped into his path. According to the Sentinel, Martin asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cellphone. Martin then said something like, "Well, you do now" and punched him,

police sources say Martin was the aggressor on Feb. 26, knocking Zimmerman to the ground with a single punch and then climbing on top of the 28-year-old neighborhood watch captain and slamming the back of his head into the ground. Police say this account, given by Zimmerman, is supported by eyewitnesses,

You already reduced Zimmerman's height from 5'9" to 5'3", and increased the victim's height from 6'0" to 6'3".  Its hard to believe anything you write.

But from CNN:

And Martin's girlfriend was on the phone with him the entire time, according to a lawyer for the shooting victim's family. Benjamin Crump said last week that the girl "completely blows Zimmerman's absurd self-defense claim out of the water."

If we're honest, none of us really has much of a clue what happened here. Martin's girlfriend has a clear reason for lying, and the police, if they fecked up the initial investigation, have a clear motive for twisting the facts. It is an interesting, though slightly depressing case, but at any point new information could be revealed that changes everything.

It takes a bit of swallowing either way imo. Either you have to believe that someone would attack another (armed) man for no reason at all or you have to believe that eyewitnesses are lying and/or there's a police cover-up.

It's a clear case of "I don't know what happened, actually" from this corner.

I am sick of the one eyed reporting of this and the 'outrage' across america over this rascist killing
Where is the nation wide black demonstrations over the black rascist killing of the two white british holiday makers
if there was a rascist killing in the US it was this  not the zimmerman incident!!!!
This is all over our national news the demos and the chest beating - makes me puke - all the professional human rights leaders who make money out of it all to the front now - pathetic!!!

The point is Zimmerman found himself on the ground with Trayvon on top of him and slamming the back of his head into the ground (as per witness statement)

In that position, does he have the right to use a gun with lethal force?

Perhaps Mr. Zimmerman might like to inform us as to WHY he "found himself on the ground".

Oh dear...

A neighbourhood watch volunteer was due to appear in court in Florida today charged with murdering teenager Trayvon Martin,  said to have been shot dead for being black and wearing a hoodie.

George Zimmerman, 28, is accused of the second degree, unpremeditated, murder of Trayvon, 17, in a gated community in the town of Sanford. If found guilty he could face a life sentence.

Even Trayvon's mother thinks it was an accident!

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/12/11159111-trayvon-martins-mom-says-she-thinks-his-killing-was-an-accident?lite

Trayvon Martin’s mother said Thursday that she believes her son’s fatal shooting by George Zimmerman was an accident and that he should apologize if he's truly remorseful.

I believe it was an accident, I believe that it just got out of control and he couldn’t turn the clock back," Sybrina Fulton told TODAY.

the story being rammed down our throatd by an over the top media feeding frenzy
By:

Well, for one thing it's an extremely interesting (though tragic) case, and obviously the media prefer an interesting story.

Tens of thousands of children starve to death every day so obviously the media aren't going to report it every day, but when tens of thousands die in a tsunami in Japan it gets far more coverage.

But if you want to see it as a big conspiracy, go ahead.

all i said was why is this story being rammed down our throats - hours of it on sky news!!
one young tragic black boys death by shooting by an hispanic guy
stikes me that the civil rights lot have jumped on this to make lots of publicity
they make money out of it too!!!!
black kids are being shot every day and black gangs on white guys and girls daily
why is that not demonstrated abouts
think on
please don't put words in my mouth or distort what I am saying thankyou
