Just read the guys wiki page, jesus! what a life! not only the massive charity stuff but 100's of marathons,100's of bouts as a pro wrestler, pro cyclist and those awards he's been given over years?? "A friend of Israel" "A knight of Malta" and allsorts also he seems to have been an ever present at chequers, and "close" to the royal family.well connected for sure was old Jimmy.

A bit odd i guess but can't think of any of the so called rumours actaully really seeing the light of day even in the internet age? probs a load of old codswallop anyway.

No feelings for the old bloke either way but i'l wager he squoze ever drop of life out of his old body

rip you tough old b'stard

Some years ago when Fleet Street was still in Fleet Street I was told the tabloids were all over him and had found nothing.

Not nothing they could prove, but nothing.

Bought his first alcoholic drink when he turned 65. I doubt he inhaled those cigars mo.

I can believe that.  I know he was odd, but probably done nothing his mother
"the duchess" would have been ashamed of.

He was about 2 days off from his 85th birthday.  Had a good innings and a good life.

De mortuis nil nisi bonum.   Quite happy to shaft the deserving dead.  Perhaps those who trash him know more.  We all have/had secrets.  Mine is I hate you all.

Some of the tributes on the BBC page are quite poignant.

"He was just a complete one-off. I think he was a bit of a lonely character as well. In the privacy of his own life I don't think he had very many friends."

Sir Jimmy's charity work was a "two-way street", adding: "He didn't have a family as such and so when he took on a charity, that became his family.

apparently there were stories of child abuse that would not be published by the media due to possible litigation/libel, but I think now he is no longer alive, that barrier is removed, so expect some dirt to be thrown. Not that I believe it but it's gonna be in the public eye soon.

that aside, I grew up while he was on jim'll fix it, seemed like a saint to me. RIP.

erse2, we shall see. But note my posting above that the tabloids had looked (admittedly a few years ago) and found nothing. Note too that no victim came forward seeking compensation from a well-known and presumably wealthy man, or even £100,000 or whatever was the going rate from the News of the World.

People going on about Sir Jimmy like he was Michael Jackson or worse. There is not one shred of evidence to back up these unsavoury stories.

Sir Jimmy was a deeply compassionate man. He wasn't perfect but then show me someone who is.

Been a bad year for people that liked doing Marathons, G Waitz, A Jones, S Wanjiru, now J Saville. RIP them all.

Although he had this mad zany front and mixed with the top stars and royalty,
he died alone and  was probably quite a lonely person in the end.

May he rest in peace.  One of a kind.

I was always scared of him for some reason Mischief couldn't see what his popularity was about myself.

In the Kelvin Mckenzie era of tabloid journos ie "anything went" they tried to do a job on Savile, various red tops engaged their finest snoops and they did indeed dig deep, yet basically found diddly squat, they had nowt to run a story with.Anne Robinson and also Piers Morgan have mentioned this story as well when they were Daily Mirror editors.

A bit odd for sure but as the tributes flood in from royalty downwards dj Nicky Campbell sums up things up rather well with this

Sir Jimmy Savile-a man so unique,a character so extrodinary,a personality so facinating yet impenetrable, you could not have made him up.

In fairness there was more than enough to bring him to trial and quite how he got off that is anyones business, and gawd knows how much hush money he paid out ove rthe yrs.

Personally thought jacko was probs never a practicing nonce, and i doubt he had a bad bone (ooer) in his body yet still it has to be said the jesus juice seemed to flow freely in certain quarters.

In fairness to Jackson who wouldn't pay some kid $7m to shutup, seems perfectly reasonable when you are innocent of showing them your c0ck.

Imagine if Sir Jimmy had paid off a family to stop a court case for paedophilia? Doubt he'd have a Knighthood and Prince Charles singing his praises.

The irony is, as some forumites have hinted, that besides Savile's remarkable work for charity, he was not really a particularly good television presenter.

He was that bullseye target of the tabloids, someone who's a bit odd yet hugely successful. I'm sure if there was anything remotely dubious about him they'd have gone after him all guns blazing. I can believe that he was socially awkward and arrogant, but that nobody seems to have stuck the book in since his death and all sorts have come out to commend him.

I thought he was a very good TV presenter, especially on fix it.

I was listening to Radio Leeds this morning. They had a phone in about Sir Jimmy.

As it was a Leeds progrmme obviously many had met him, usually when he was donating his time to  hospital duties at St James Hospital. Nobody had anything bad to say about him.

One chap said that he bumped into Jimmy in the lift after he had been visting his mother who had not long to live. Jimmy asked which ward his mother was on.

Next time he visited his mother she told him that Jimmy had spent half an hour with her.

Jimmy Saville perhaps well illustrates something we are (IMO) foolish in not accepting - that morality is complex, we can fail in some areas and succeed in others. The best American presidents have often been the worst of family men.

I live in Roundhay Leeds very near Jimmys flat, saw him on a regular basis on his runs,he was also a regular in many of the upmarket resturants in the area with his entourage in attendance, I actually sat on the same table as Jimmy at a curry house with my wife and had a pleasant conversation with him.
