surely i misheard that about a third of all spending goes on welfare/benefits. that's about 230 BILLION pounds. How can it possibly that much. (that's not health, education or defence in there)

What does that include then? dole money, incapacity benefit, housing benefit, council tax benefit disability living allowance, pensions, child benefit, family tax credit, other stuff. |

Bit of an insult I reckon giving them a handout when its cold. Just put it on the pension so they can spend it/save it over the course of the year. It's just a way of complicating the whole system, because I think you still have to apply for it, which means civil servants time and effort is wasted filling in forms, printing forms and looking at forms and all that nonsense. Fk £200/£400 a year and just give them an extra £4/£8 a week.

I think the pro of it coming in a lump at winter time is that a lot people in this country are socialist peons who cannot manage their money, therefore would have blown it on scratchcards each week and then struggle through winter again, moaning.

The staggering statistic is that the cost of benefits is almost exactly equal to the take from income tax. About £160bn.
Read this (from 2009) and weep: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/5651825/Benefit-payouts-will-exceed-income-tax-revenue.html In other words, every penny taken from your earnings as income tax, goes straight to paying the benefits of the workshy, feckless and irresponsible. For a higher rate taxpayer, it's the equivalent of working until June before you get to keep any of the money you've earned. Of course, the lefties on the forum (you know who you are) would say that this is both fair and sustainable. |

A few facts that some of you most probably don't know :
1) Two weeks ago the minimum wage was raised by the magnificent sum of 13p to £5-93p per hour. Bear the following facts in mind first : At the age of 18, a male is considerd to be a man. He can: Vote in an election. He can enter a betting shop. If he commits a serious criminal offence he will go to prison, not a borstal. He can watch X rated films at a cinema. he can go into a pub and buy an alcoholic drink. (Strange how he can buy cigarettes at 16, but there's a lot of tax in that for the govt coffers) In the vent of the country declaring war on another country, he will be eligible to be called up for active service, and may get killed doing it. On the very same day that the the minimum wage was increased, The Equalities Bill came into force. Everybody is now considered equal (yeh - right) regardless of race, creed, colour, gender, sexual orientation and probably a host of other crap. EQUALITIES BILL ????? is bollocks. You are NOT entitled to minimum wage until you are 22 years old. It was 23 until two weeks ago. So once you pass 18. and you could die for your country, you're still not a man in the eyes of your government unless you survive until you're 22. That doesn't sound very EQUAL, to me. Now back to £5-93 an hour, which is the minimum nationwide, no matter where you live. Unskilled labourers in London get paid more than this because if they were paid the minimum, it wouldn't be worth going to work if they had a wife and a child. But, JSA, Incapacity Benefit and any other benefit, is paid at the SAME rate all over the UK, no matter where you live. |

been reading some more whilst in the pub.
According to the analysis, the wealthiest fifth of Britons have a net household income averaging £48,700 and they use public services with an estimated value of £5,400 each year. The poorest fifth have an average income of £13,800 but use public services totalling £11,500. (from the Telegraph) Why the discrepancy? What does the 11.5k go on? |

£28billion a year is paid out in Housing Benefit and Tax Credits to families who have decided to work, but the wages don't pay enough to live on.
Ask yourself a question - if you were an employer, would you pay your staff more so they had no need to claim benefits, or let the government take up the slack from the taxpayers? |
