gus demmy - i know somebody has put them already but this little story may tell the younger gamblers how it used to be. i rang up 1 saturday to have a bet on the dogs at a really small track down south (now this demmy fella prided himself on laying anything). this lady answers the phone and i say 'morning - can i have a bet please?' the woman replies 'hiya paul - y'alrite? u gonna play well today luv?' i went 'erm - sorry, im not paul, its frank. do u want my account number?' she laughed ' and said 'oh - hiya frank! oh im so sorry. i thought u were somebody else.' so i says 'who?' 'paul ince. he always rings on saturday for a bet.' they used to know u by name and only knock u back, halve u or close yr account as a last resort. any jub nowadays can get a letter saying that their account is not commercially good business, for them. 20 yrs or more ago, if u got 1 of those u framed them and put them above the fireplace! |

Stanleys had the best football prices ..always a shade better than anyone else on the fancied teams ..
so if you did say a 4 team accumulator or such , it soon mounted up the difference in payout .. ----- Pat Whelan ... Also although I used to bet with him I didn't have an account with him --Pat Whelan ..a gent of a bookie , always willing to haggle on his price for you ..and always the smile and quip ..
