Yellow Punto Man (T.ote, Bradford)
Described as such because he drives a yellow punto, believe it or not. He pops in every day with a handful of slips, lucky 15's, cross doubles, accumulators, puts his bets on and then sorts out all the locals with copy DVD's (and he's not chinese before you ask ) and leaves again. |

Zorba The Greek (T.ote, Bradford)
Don't know his real name but he used to own the Greek restaurant on the road from the bookies that is now an Italian place. This guy has more money than sense, puts bets on between £50 - £150 straight win and I swear in all the years I've been in there I've never seen him back a winner. He's only ever in there about 5 mins, places bet, loses, curses at the screen (fevking rubbish ) and leaves. |

Mr Angry and the Unluckiest Punter ever!!
Used to enjoy this guys antics and tantrums! If a Horse or a Dog fell it was always his one! It's reached the stage that I just wait for his Betting Slip to bounce off the TV Screen! One day I picked up one of his discarded slips after he's been cursing and swearing at the jockey/trainer/dog/horse! It was for a 10p reverse forecast! He needs anger management methinks! |

A carols shop in Blackburn
**y Harry Dunno if his name is Harry but he's a**, smokes the most fowl smelling sh1t fags ever (thank god for the smoking ban) but he always stands in your way trying to read the RP from 7cm's away. Wears the same clothes every day and drives a rusty old green mazda. I bet he's a member of the Triads and **g rich as fook. |

Theres nothing more irratating than this cnut when he's got a bet one. Stands about 3foot away from the screen just making that clicking sound with his mouth as if to be calling the horse over and keeps saying " Cmon lad get up get ..."
THEY CANT **G HEAR YOU YOU DAFT KOONT. Even whips his arse You'd think he was a jockey was it not for the fact he's built like a sumo wrestler |

Every morning from 10am till 12 he checks the NR and writes boards, crosses off all the NR for the day.
He got 1 wrong the other day and I only noticed it cus it was in my L15.So I double checked and presto it was still running so where he'd put a line through it I wrote next to it "It still fkn runs" I bet this bloke only does 1 or 2 bets per day and its not big money |

My mate John
Theres a bloke who goes in everyday from 12 till 5pm. He's an old bloke but very clued up on the GG's in fact he used to have his own bookmakers years and years ago but now retired and Ive got to know him. He's really nice chap and for an old fogey he's quick witted and very funny. His only bets are R/TC's on the Horses and the Dogs. He only bets 20p stakes but I bet he's making £20 per day and I don't think he's every gone home without his profit. Once he hits his target of £15-£20 he will call it a day hence sometimes Ive seen him in at Night which is a little worrying sometimes as he does leave a bit late for a bloke of his age. nice chap though and always gives me his Nap. |

Laddies in Willesden...a while ago there was an old guy called Jim who went in, regularly, on Saturday for his punting. Got to know him, found out he used to be on the Russian convoys, survived a sinking, but he didn't realise that he had used his luck up all in one go?
In his e/w lucky 15's I have never known anyone have as many 4th places in 8 runner races. "Fecking fourth again. I just do not believe my luck" was a refrain heard every Saturday until he moved away. ================================= Then, last week, the "know it all but knows nothing". Bets loads of money on sports but rarely seen to pick up. Talking with me about the US tourney last week and how he had done his homework and really fancied Notah Begay. Big price but looked a certainty during round 4 (a 1/50 shot he said). I remarked he should have laid it on Betfair at that price. His reply? "Nah, I would sooner back a couple of 16/1 shots"!!!!!! |

Hello Sophie/Dobb. I think there was a bit of misunderstanding at first but it was soon cleared up. He was very vigilant on the door and still watches over us even now.
Hope you're keeping well. |

Geoff "I was on" Simpson....Ladbrokes, Leicester. 16/1, 25/1 33/1.....It didnt matter what it was, if you werent there and it happened, our Geoff was on, he was on more 50/1 winners than I had ever seen. Amazing, he must have won millions but still managed to look like the biggest sack of sh1t ever, he would have made a good tramp if he smartened himself up a bit. I remember walking in after Red Marauder had won the national at 33's.........you on it Geoff? "Oh aye, had to be backed at that price" I think everyone knew he was a serial bullsh1tter, but you didnt wanna hear that he had lost, he always felt better because on the outside he was a winner. If youre reading this Geoff I love ya. |

By:
Ah, I thought 'In Zaire' rang a bell! It must have been someone else talking about Shavers one night. I'm sure they said he worked on a door somewhere in Britain?
|
|
By:
That would be Earnie Shavers, Tommy. He works as a 'greeter' in a club in Liverpool.
I was swotting up on Alis opponents last night, and I said to the Mrs that there are probably youngsters who turn up at the door thinking 'Look at that old bastid' :0 not knowing who he is, and what he did for a living. The body may not be in top shape, the reactions slower, the brain not as quick, but one thing a fighter never loses is the ability to punch, and as you know, The Black Acorn could punch. It makes me smile to think of a few drunken yobs trying to take him on. I'd love to see it. |

From Wildcatarmy on PL
Am I allowed to add one to this and bring it back to the top, as I found it an entertaining read for the past few hours. Dancing Pete Pete was a lovely guy, who as far as I am aware gained some form of problem having worked in the mines over the years. As the race unfolded he would stand in front of the screen with his hands folded rocking from leg to leg more and more furiously as the race came close to its conclusion. Normally he would shout "go on Pat" as he was on one of Edderys mounts. He rode the finish better than most jockeys did and would either** them off if his horse lost, or laugh out loud if it won. Everyone in the town knew him, but those that didnt would look at him strangely, especially if he stamped on their feet as he began to ride the finish of the race again. Anyway, I used to know a few people in the northern circuit, just a few apprentices who were nice guys and got a fair bit of decent info out of them all. But my main contact used to hate Dancing Pete as he always said he was bad luck, and any info we had was not to tell him. One weekend we had travelled to John Nortons yard to enquire about buying a horse there. As we were there he told us of an ex Sheikh Mohammed cast off called Landler who he had paid a few grand for out of the Sheiks cast off sales. He was a nice horse who had turned round the wrong way at the start of his bumper race and never had a chance. He would be trying at Doncaster the following weekend though. The race arrived and Landler was ridden by Ed Callaghan, a jockey who we got to know via the apprentices in Malton. Ed was a cracking jockey who never went as far as he could, but was always fair with us and always stopped for a drink or a chat if we came to see him. Landler opened up 33/1 when I went in. Now I was only working in a local pub as a glass collecter, and I earnt just over £20 a week. Out of that I'd have to pay £14 for my weekly driving lesson. I wrote £5 e/w Landler at 33/1, and then saw Dancing Pete. I said to him "keep this quite Pete please, but have a £1 e/w on Landler in the next, if its out of the first 3 I will give you your money back". Id have been skint and would have had to lend off someone to pay for my lesson, but what the hell. Pete looked at the RP and said, "its 33/1, its no chance". I just told him to keep quiet, and Eddie would do what he could on it. The race began and with about 4f to go Landler was up there in the front rank, Pete began rocking. 2f out and Landler was neck and neck with another in front, Pete was rocking wildly. 1f out and Landler looked to be about a neck in front, Pete was going wild !! Landler managed to hold on to land the gamble at 33/1, Pete had smoke coming out of his feet. Everyone in the bookies looked in shock as me and Pete were the only ones shouting it home. Everyone asked how he had backed the 33/1 winner and he pointed me out and said he knew the jockey. Everyone in bookies suddenly wanted to become my mate as I was the one in the know, but I didnt want to know. Collected my winnings, told Pete to keep quiet and not to lose his winnings, and to go clear a few of the debts he had built up with the newsagent and pizza shop who used to let him have stuff and run up a bill, he always cleared it. Went home with the world at my feet. It was my mates 18th birthday so we had gone out for the night to celebrate. Had a few in the local club where I worked, got a few beers bought for us by some of the elder drinkers in there who I had told to back Landler the night before. Then a call on my mobile from my contact. "you f*****g c**t, Im gonna f*****g kill you". "Whats up I asked ?". "You f*****g told Pete about Landler". "I never did, honest". "Dont lie, your f*****g dead !!". I texted him and left messages trying to prove my innocence, to save me getting a beating. The next afternoon, I went for a pint in the local in town at lunchtime. The landlord called me over and said I just want to say thanks for helping Pete out last night with that winner. I asked how he knew about it. Pete alwasy used to go in the pubs and ask for a pint of water (it was free) and only drunk alcohol if someone bought him one. This Saturday night he strolled in and ordered a pint of woodpecker and a vodka. Everyone in the pub looked on in astonishment as it was strange for him to order such a drink. The landlord asked how he could afford this, and he said that I had given him a 33/1 winner of the bumper at Doncaster that day. Sadly, Pete didnt know my contact very well. He was sat about ten yards away in the pub as Pete announced to all about his winner. My mobile rang soon after !! It cost me £40 to save me a beating, and a further £20 and a few pints to keep the info coming, and I had to promise not to tell Pete anymore ! |

From Steve O in Cardiff
I remember this guy who would be in Corals everyday and didn't have a pot to** in. He had a stutter like Granville and would peer over your shoulder to see how much you were waging and always asked " Whhhhooooo ddddoooooo yyyyyoouu ffffanccccy toddddaayyy then buttt". He loved to play the fruit machines and enjoyed watching everyone else playing them as well. The clothes he wore were like a uniform as they were always the same. There would also be a guy called Scrumpy in there who used to keep all his losing slips, save them up and then ask the cashier to check if he had a winner or any non runners just to fcuk them off. Watching a race whilst he was in therer was particulalrly painful as he'd be shouting home whatever horse Fallon was on and also which ever horse was making it's way to the front. It would go something like "Come on Fallon, come on son. Whoop Stoute's horse has got him see I told you Stoute's would have him". Now Scrumpy is best mates with my Uncle Gareth who is the unluckiest punter of all time. he has always bet on horses and never won much more than £200. He is also a jinx and you can guarantee that if you have backed the same horse that he has done it won't win, it really is that uncanny. Also if you need a horse to win for a really big bet up if you tell him the name of the horse, that horse will lose, it really will My father told me that when he and Gareth were kids my Grandfather needed the last horse to win for a nice accummulator. The fancy was about 10 lenghts in front coming to the last when Gareth announced "HAHA I bet he'll fall" and of course the inevitable happened and he had to run for his life as if my Grandfather had caught up with him he'd have battered him. |

MICK THE PR*CK (Blackburn)
Goes in our local Betfred shop. Firstly, I don't like him because he's twice tried hitting on the missus whilst I've been out with her, nobhead that he is! But this is the guy who, if there are a lot of meetings, bets only in doubles and trebles with the race times 5 minutes apart. So, within 10-15 minutes, he will know whether he is skint (which he usually is) or loaded (which he never is). Was in there about 6 months ago, and had a £20 treble (yes, £20) - first one won at 7/2, second one won at 3/1, third one finished 4th at 10/1. 2 winners from 3, and what does he get - fcuk all. Gets the 'pr*ck' part of his name from the verbal abuse he launched at his missus one Saturday afternoon in the shop. She walked into the bookies, he said 'wtf are you doing here?' she says 'I need £20 for some new school shoes for the kids - they're back at school on Monday' he says 'fcuk off. I'm skint' ...... then proceeds with his £10 and £20 win treble bets. W@nker. __________________ |

THE BIG SHOT (Salford)
comes in everyday to place his bets before going to cheltenham, ascot, epsom etc. tells you how hes meeting henry cecil later at the track, but has come in to place his bets early, incase "word gets out" usually appears at end of day. before shop shuts and somehow has made the 150 mile journey back in about 15 mins (presumably a lift on one of his racing contacts helicopters). usually tells you not verbally tells him his winnings in case he gets robs on way out of shop, but he says loudly enough so everyone in the shop overhears manager then gets up to payout this customer due to his importance and loudly says "THATS 23 PENCE BACK ON THAT 10P LUCKY 15 |

From Ordinary Sunday
A story told to me by a good friend who basically has had his battles with gambling over the years, but just loves it so much he has never been able to quite retire yet after many failed attempts. He was once living with someone who he described as ''loving it more than me''. One morning he got up,walked into the front room, and was quite astonished to see that his mate had carefully pinned up that day's Sporting Life all over the front room walls, and was there slip and pen in hand reading up the form, oblivious to all around him. Now that really is loving it |

From Danny Cash in Manchester
PERM MAN Used to frequent a Done's in the good old days and one guy that really used to get on my nerves was the scouser with the tight perm and big mouth who'd take up the entire front of the shop with his newspapers spread out, he'd be shouting, pointing at the screen, chatting to anyone that would listen at how amazing he was at finding the winners etc... Funny thing was I NEVER saw him collect a winning bet. His most regular comments after a race were " I TOLD YOU I WAS GOING TO BACK THAT ONE! ", " DIDN'T I SAY THAT ONE HAD A CHANCE?!", "THAT WAS THAT TIP I HAD!!" - but he never actually managed to successfully back any of these winning predictions. The all time classic: I remember him backing trap 4 at momore and as it trailed last into the home straight I swear he said as the winning dog crossed the line.." I told you trap 3 would beat trap 1 but I didn't do the forecast did I?" |

I used to be a regular in the bookies in the 70's 80's and 90's,but since then luckily for me work commitments have taken over.
I had a rare visit to one of my old haunts yesterday, and to my utter disbeleavment some of the old characters wer still going strong. Shruggyourshoulder This guy i dont know his first name but he is a mad gambler.i am talking from trhe very first race of the morning(dogs) to the very last race of the afternoon,he would lay out the same bet, which was say a dog race,a five dog combination f/c (20 bets) leaveing whatever was the favourite in the Racing post out of his bet,he sometimes even did the same selection in five dog comination tricast (60 bets) . In all the time i have known him he has always had plenty of readies. When you saw him at the pay counter he would look at you and always shrugged his shoulders. I stayed in the bookies yesterday for four hours and he was on top form, collecting on most races and doing his party piece. |
