The backing band is hardly an advanced question in a music quiz. That's what I meant. But I still wouldn't have known the answer. |

I didn't know about the Jordanaires either.

I grew up listening to Buddy Holly because it was the first CD my parents bought I think. I thought "Everyday" was my all time favourite Buddy song. Also remember watching a film at school called "Buddy" about a washed up old teddy boy(played by Roger Daltrey) struggling to bring up his kid on a council estate despite having no money.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a clever so and so. They weren't as famous as The Shadows, but I'd say that they are pretty well known. |

I recognised the name ten2follower, just didn't know they were his backing band. I can imagine it is a well known snippet of information.

The films you are on about is Buddy's Song (I think). Also had Chesney Hawkes - you will hear him next Friday I guess, and his dad perhaps tomorrow. :) |

I didn't think you were being clever, I really hadn't heard of them.
Keep this up. Thread of the year imo. |

Bobby Darin - "Dream Lover"
3 July for 4 weeks 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dimASX52avY Can't belive howold some of these guys look, he was only 23 at the time ffs. A classic song from one of the early rock and roll greats. Perhaps he shouldn't be dancing though. |

A few Stones no 1's soon to keep you sane.

Cliff Richard and the Drifters - "Living Doll"
31 July for 6 weeks 1959 I love this song - a real cracker. ok cliff is not my favourite in the world, but I will always love this song because of the young ones version of it. I was a kid at the time and thought the bit where says "Anyone know where the toilets are" was the funniest thing ever of all time. More quiz amunition - He was backed bythe Drifters not the Shadows as they changed their name later on. |

Craig Douglas - "Only Sixteen"
11 September for 4 weeks 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJMgOiPzsXM Imagine singing about 16year olds these days, some proper pervs around back in the day. And I suppose this sums up my frustration with the 50s. Only a few months short of1960 and no number ones from Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Fats Domino and no end of other rock and roll greats. Were we that racist back in the 50s that we couldn't allow blacks to reach number 1? Was it necessary for CraigDouglas to cover this song by Sam Cooke because otherwise the British public would not buy it? If so it is a shame, because those 4 I've just mentioned are all time greats and would imo add an extra bit of spice to any song they perform. Bellafonte and the Platters topped the tree, but they weren't rock and rollers. I think an opportunity was missed there. The number ones were largely from white males with pretty faces and decent voices - summed up by the king of rock and roll himself - Elvis Presley. |

Brilliant thread

Young Girl (Gary Puckett) was even worse. They wouldn't be such big hits now!

Wait till you get to the 9year old singing about his female friend from Merseyside, pervert.

Jerry Keller - "Here Comes Summer"
9 October for 1 week 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sePcM7QbraQ A nice little numbe. strange for it to reach number 1 in October. Is Summer a girl, a season or both. Oh who care anyway. Not so keen on the gospel choir type harmonising in the background. |

I think, wisty, that in the early days records were made for families and parents, not just kids. There was probably a gradual shift towards marketing towards teens at about the time you're listening too now, hence the change from crooners to more 'poppy/rocky' stuff. fwiw I think the 50's sort of ended in 1963, musically.
It's also worth remembering that many many many good songs never got to number 1. Many big names never had many hits at all. The Carpenters, Barry manilow, The Eagles, all never had a No 1. |

Bobby Darin - "Mack the Knife"
16 October for 2 weeks 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dDs_N3kGQk Quite simply one of the greatest songs ever written, though this young, clean cut white kid does not really offer much. Louis Armstrong's version is much better. In fact I've no doubt Wayne Fontana's brother (Fingers) did too. He was best mats with my dad nd apparently oop north they don't get all p.ssed up and have a singsong, no they just watch one bloke singing and Fingers was renowned around Manchester for doing the best version of Mack The Knife. Bloody hell, I reckon Robbie Williams' version is better than this. |

I know only too well Study. Bob Dylan never had a number 1 either :(
How much of a tragedy is that. (Not that he'll be too fussed I don't suppose) |

Cliff Richard and The Shadows - "Travellin' Light"
30 October for 5 weeks 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBBkrhIHi3M Well I don't like this song. It is a new one to me, thought I would've heard of all Cliff's number ones. Just a nothing song, a shame because I thought Living Doll was cracking. And what the fek is he wearing? I think in america they call it the "preppy" look. |

Adam Faith - "What Do You Want?" (equal top for one week)
4 December for 3 weeks 1959 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgeFRgQpT8Y Call me old mr old fashioned, but I just don't like my rock and roll stars to metamorphise into Financial Journalists. What is that all about. Another decent song, nothing special. |
|
By:
Here come the 60s :)
Although as Study said, they didnt start till 1963 |
|
By:
Emile Ford and The Checkmates - "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?"
18 December for 6 weeks (equal top for one week) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM-39KU7ZXc A jolly enough little effort, that was still uk number one well into 1960. Time to say goodbye to the 50s. As has just been said the 60s didn't really start until 1963. So I think I shall have a wee rest. |

I have done about 108 so far, and there are about 1100 in total. 10% of the way there, could take a few weeks at least this.

By the way that program i saw at school was not buddy's song, it was "Buddy"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_(TV_series) Was good fun, father and son both got really p.ssed down the pub one day even though the son was only about 13 years old. Can't believe they thought that was suitable viewing for 10yo kids. Was a schools programme. |
|

Cheers ELW.
I'll get a look at that. Quite similar plots. I wonder if they are based on one in the same. |

Guess you could say Mcguinns Rickenbacker changed my perception of music. Any seminal bands in your back history? |

Tams I was born in 1961
Apparently my mum tells me when I was two I knew every song in the charts & named them within a couple of seconds, I really started enjoying 60's music when I reached about 20 other than the obvious like the beatles, I like groups like Marmalade. Hollies,Small Faces, but it was the fact that if you looked up the top 20 chart singles of the 60's & 70's there would be a dozen records you could say were familiar songs that you could say you liked, how things have changed. |
|

Remember being in the Schoolyard in '59
still trying to take in Buddy's dying and then "Guess it doesn't matter any more" came out. Creased me emotionally back then I recall. |
|
By:
My Dad bought me a Buddy Holly Album in the early 70's
I think I played it most days for about a year, it was a massive loss at the time if not for years to come. |

Michael Holliday - "Starry Eyed"
29 January for 1 week 1960 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KEnUmQAwCE What a strange looking guy, with astrange gait and a strange manner. A rubbish song. |
|
By:
Anthony Newley - "Why"
5 February for 4 weeks 1960 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcNNY0arYto&feature=related I really liked his "Somebody's nicked all me strawberries" song but that didn't get to no.1 yet this one did. It isn't awful, but not what I was expecting, Strawberry Fair is a cracking tune, I thought that showed he has a great sense of humour. This is a nice "dinky donky" sort of tune I suppose |
