I like songs like this. ba ba bom. Just remembered, I found out last night that a mate of a mate sparred with Mohammed Ali. Got in a bit of trouble for doubting them.

Perry Como - "Magic Moments"
28 February for 8 weeks 1958

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSqQgoR76t0

I love this song, reminds me of Sunday evenings in the pub when I was a kid. Always stank of burnt cabbage because the old boy who was landlord always fell asleep after putting his roast dinner on and let it overcook. The smell of burnt cabbage is an unforgettablesmell. Top tune imo, didn't know it was a Perry Como song mind.

Good stuff, Rob. Only read page 1 but I'll do the rest when I get chance. I did notice just above me 'Magic Moments'. A bloke at work once randomly started singing 'I'll never forget' but he obviously did as he followed it with 'der-der-der-der-der'!

Marvin Rainwater - "Whole Lotta Woman"
25 April for 3 weeks 1958

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp7FZip5dy0

Right, here we go again, I seem to be working a little nocturnally recently. A nice bluesy early rock and roll number. Never heard this song before. Top name too - it was his christened name too, not a stage name. Marvin Rainwater? What will they think of next?

Even I've heard of this song. I don't like it, a nothing song imo.

Vic Damone - "On the Street Where You Live"
27 June for 2 weeks 1958

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOVswTV9uCg

The 1950s seem to have taken a backward step. This song belongs in the roaring forties. Dull.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aroPvjmhu9g

All I have to do is dream.... I recognise this song, but not from the title. The first video is worth a look - Dafydd must've done some stir and painted himself. Not so keen on Claudette. Rock and Roll doesn't seem tohave started yet and Buddy Holly willbe dead in 6 months. Can't believe these songs werejoint top wth Vic Damone's earlier effort. Who was doing the counting ffs.

22 August for 5 weeks 1958

Another one of those tunes I recognise, but never from the title. If only I had a good memory this coud be very educational.

26 September for 6 weeks

I like these songs, can't help but let it remind me of the popular pub quiz team name "Cupid Stunts". Dear wee Connie is tidy enough as well. Not so keen on Carolina Moon.

Decent song in the Nat King Cole style. Good voice I have to admit. It is the only #1 pop single to have been cowritten by a U.S. Vice President. Well you don't say

Lord Rockingham's XI - "Hoots Mon"

Now this is a song, top band name and top song name. I first became aware of it from the advert where a nutter is running round a mansion saying "There's a moose loose aboot this hoose" Worth a listen.

Very good this one. Peter Cook once did a spoof of Twitty with a US singer called "That twit conway" Andhe does sound like Elvis.

Jane Morgan - "The Day the Rains Came"
23 January for 1 week 1959

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ4P7v8OEgs

This one of those big band numbers that I don't like. Just some bird wailing. Her voice i suppose is !"accomplished" that's all. The song itself is pretty average. I hate to think what the competition would be like.

30 January for 3 weeks 1959

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8-hAM8tdr0

I hadn't heard "i got stung" before. I thought I'd heard every Elvis song, but apparently not. It is unmistakenly Elvis. Considering some of the earlier number ones it is not hard to se why someone like Elvis was so sensational. Buddy Holly died while this was number one - hence the American Pie (not a uk no1 btw) line.... February made me shiver... Not so keen on "ONe night".

Shirley Bassey with Wally Stott & His Orchestra - "As I Love You"

Get your earplugs ready. Imagine Moira Stewart wrapped in tin foil through which an electric current is applied meaning she starts wailing like a goodun. This is a godawful way to send a few minutes of your life, so I beg you not to follow the link. People pay good money for this, good grief. Is actually painful to my ears, and has put me off music, so I shall have a short rest.

Great stuff this. I've often thought people moaning about today's music needed to have been alive in the 70s, when every othr bloody song was a novelty sack of w@nk. It doesn't suprise me that the 50s was even worse.

70's was probably the best decade for music, but the whole history of the charts is peppered with nauseating garbage, and imo, it takes a turn for the worse after about 1985, with the advent of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. There was something of a musical revival around 99-04 then mostly crap again.

This is an admirable task you're undertaking, Wisty, and it makes interesting reading. Plus, think of all the expertise you're gaining.

When you've finished you could try all the top 5's in history.
Then the Album Charts, then the US Top 10's.

I like this kind of tune. A jolly little piano number, reminds me of an English Country Garden song. Not sure about the comic intro, perhapsthey were rolling in the aisles at it 51 years ago.

What a shame we lost this bloke so young. Just pure class imo, and he wrote his own songs too. I prefer him to Elvis, though Chuck Berry is the best of the 50s rockers but he didn't have any number ones back then.

Just can't argue with Elvis P. I don't recognise this song mind. I didn't know he had a backing band mentioned on any of his titles either - I bet that is a stock quiz question. Quality song.

Think sing song around a piano, but with no singing. Another jolly little number. Well done Russ Conway, we need more people like you in music imo. A one man butlins entertainment show. I bet he was packing them out.
