Tired of Waiting for you - The Kinks
18th Feb for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz64hWng2vM Another classic from the Kinks, though a bit short (2:09) A lot of records of this era seem to be on the short side. Nice bit of garden furniture the drummers playing on top of! |

Ill never find another you - The Seekers
25th Feb for 2 weeks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idf2lQ3l298&feature=related First Australian act to top the UK charts, and went on to become huge world wide, although difficult to believe from this performance. My mums favourite group :) Keith Potger, guitarist on left went on to form The New Seekers. |

Its not unusual - Tom Jones
11th March for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOArsNMVqGg Tom Jones in a shirt borrowed from Harry Hill. Not my cup of tea, but half decent performance from the Welshman. |

Rolling Stones "The Last Time" 18 March 1965 3 weeks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1hTC7uircQ An indication of what they would become, not the stones at their peak imo. Mick Jagger starting to become what he would become though. Decent listen imo. |

Unit 4 + 2 "Concrete and Clay" 8 April 1965 1 week
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBVq6bag9z8 The title is better than the song imo. The band name is better than the song too tbh. One of those famous songs that many (obviously not every) people know. A bit w.anky tbh, but worth a go, not a patch on many that have gone before. I would like to elaborate, but i've looked at their wikipedia page and there really is little more to say about this lot that I haven't already said. |

Cliff Richard "The Minute You're Gone" 15 April 1965 1 week
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVVNQ21b-zk I'll be honest with you, I didn't want a Cliff Richard song on my shift. Yet having listened to this song I stand by that stance. A p.ss poor song imo, I had grown to the state where I didn't hate Cliff with a passion, because some of his earlier efforts were, well, alright. This is awful as far as i am concerned. A tragedy that this hit the top of the charts when the beatles and the stones were well on their way to perfection. A shame. |
|
By:
About time Rob :). I did have a wry smile when i looked at the next 3 number 1s. Apart from the Stones of course. One of my favourite tracks with a great intro.

As far as I'm concerned the 3 on 3 off system is just a guideline mmm. If I don't update, for one reason or another, for a few days then feel free to update on my behalf.
I wonder when it will all be finished? I reckon there are about 25 number ones/year, times 45 years to go = about 900 still to rate. That works out about 150 go's each. Reckon It will take another year. Still it will be a satisfying finale. :) |

Ticket to ride - The Beatles
22nd April for 3 weeks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwc8Jqe0kRE&feature=related The Beatles 7th consecutive No 1. Not one of my favourites but sounds much better the more you hear it. According to Wiki, Mcartney reckons it was about a train journey to the IOW town of Ryde? which sounds a bit obvious, but I prefer Lennons take on it. Lennon said it described cards indicating a clean bill of health carried by Hamburg prostitutes in the 1960s. |

King of the road - Roger Miller
13th May for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmOe27SJ3Yc Love this song and was clicking my fingers as soon as it started. Suprised he died in 1992, but was less suprised he didnt play for Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup. |

Where are you now (my love) - Jackie Trent
20th May for 1 week http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cx_U6oydwQ Never heards this before, and seems out of place in the 60s Britband era.Good voice though, written by her then hubby Tony "Crossroads" Hatch. Just about remember him from New Faces. (The Simon Cowell of the 70s) |

Sandie Shaw "Long Live Love" May 1965 3 weeks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At8as-jujIs She was a pretty wee thing. It's alright this song, but never quite lives up to the expectation,I keep expecting it to get really lively but it doesn't happen. Still it is ok I s'pose. |

Elvis Presley "Crying In The Chapel" 17 June 1965 1 week
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00eUebsh68M A slow timid song. I think only Elvis could get away with this, he just churned out the number ones, but so many of them were far from "rocking", considering he was the King of Rock and Roll. Not one of my favourites if I was to be frank. |

The Hollies "I'm Alive" 24 June 1965 1 week
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSqZC7G3_9I Reminds me a little of the earlier Honeycombs hit. I suppose the Hollies are ok, I grew up listening to them (they re released He ain't heavy sometime in the late 80s) and one of the first CDs we had in the house was a Hollies compilation. Not even sure i I overly recognise this song though strangely enough. They did far better songs imo. That's my shift over, didn't get the best ones again, oh well. |

Elvis Presley "Crying In The Chapel"
1st July 1965 1 week[/b [b]Im Alive - The Hollies 8th July 1965 for 1 week What is it with these records returning back to No 1? The Hollies were a great band and had 11 top 5 singles in the 60s but only one number 1. 4th best band of 60s imo Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds 22nd July for 2 weeks Great cover of a Dylan song. One of those rare "better than the original" imo. Is that David Crossby on the tambourine? |
|
By:
yep loads of songs returning to number one so far, very strange, never seems to happen these days. For all the Hollies were decent, I find it hard to say they were one of the top 4 bands of the sixties, though I did think "He ain't Heavy" was a very good song. A lot of their other songs were pretty average I thought. Each to their own of course. I agree about "Tambourine Man" though, and it pains me to say it as a mad Bob Dylan fan, I do prefer the Byrds version to the original.
Right I'm gonna have a little perv on this camels toe. |

22nd July for 2 weeks Great cover of a Dylan song. One of those rare "better than the original" imo. Is that David Crossby on the tambourine? probably |

Regarding "Help", I think that comic relief version of the late eighties (my first recollection of the song) has put me off the track for life. A shame, because perhaps it isn't all that bad.

I got you babe - Sonny and Cher
26th Aug for 2 weeks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BERd61bDY7k&feature=related Cher when she still had her original bits. One of those songs that loses a bit cos youve heard it so many times, and it wasnt that great the first time. |

Rolling Stones "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" 9 September 1965 2 weeks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVEN0KE2VC0 This song has, more than once, been voted the greatest of all time. I wouldn't agree, of course, but christ on a bike it is not far off. The signature tune of, in my opinion, the best rock band of all time. This abridged version is perhaps not the best ever, in fact it isn't within a million miles from some of their proper live versions, but it does give a glimpse of what was to come, even if they did tone it down for Mr Sullivan. My god, that Jagger did have his head up his own ar.e, but fair play to him, he got more than his fair share of flange as a result. |

The Walker Brothers "Make It Easy On Yourself" 23 September 1965 1 week
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZTS9H-l5qQ Three Unrelated musicians apparently. A disappointment after The Stones I have to admit, but a decent enough tune if you're into this kind of thing. I'm not though. A cheesy ballad is all I can say about it. Sorry |
