They came back to blighty, lived in a small village in Notts or Northants for a while as her mother was seriously ill. I assume she either recovered or died for them to move to Clacton.
I can swear a bit, ask Orioles. He's scared to answer the phone in case I talk him to death. :) |

For skill and guts, my money's on Benny Lynch. In fact, I would pay good money to see his defeat of Small Montana. My great-grandfather took my grandpa to see that fight, which led to my grandpa, my dad and then me putting on the gloves. (In an amateur way, of course.)
Here's a taste of the BIG wee man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr-H4oBhe7g |

There's a whole docimentary about that fella on youtube.
I've not heard of him before but a great find if you like boxing, I can tell. Cheers Bill. |

I only ever boxed as an amateur (schoolboy and Army) but I was sometimes guilty (mea culpa) of placing too much reliance on my height and weight in the ring. Smaller guys can't do that, there isn't much between them and they HAVE to use skill and determination.
Lynch was a legend but we have good boxers alive today who don't get the glamour of the heavyweights. Barry McGuigan is a case in point. In my mind, he was a better boxer than Muhammad Ali. (I'll just crouch down behind these sandbags for when the big man wakes up in the morning ;-) ) |

Benny Lynch was one of my dad's favourites.

Can't really think of two many great fights I've seen tbh. Probably one of the eubank/watson/benn/mclellan fights, not sure which one.
|
|
By:
Watson/Benn. My dads mate reckoned Benn would punch himself out and Watson would outclass him late on. I backed rounds six seven and eight because of his advice.
Colin Jones getting beat by Don Curry was a good'un. And most of Haglers were fierce. Bruno winning the title was probably the most emotional for me though |

Ch12 now on freeview is 'The Fight' detailing the Ali-Frazier rivalry.

Soz I've not read the thread so feel free to pulverise me if this has already been covered. I have vague recollections of a guy nicknamed 'The Black Mamba' (circa 1989) having a fight & the whole thing descending into a mass brawl, with the trainers (& poss the ref) getting their noses bloodied etc.
Also, while the actual Bruno/Tyson fight was no great shakes, the build-up was mint as myself & about a dozen mates barricaded ourselves in my mate's house, shut the curtains, unplugged the phone, locked the door, stayed up all night & waited until the fight was broadcast on terrestrial TV the next day (a la Likely Lads). Thankfully no-one spoiled it for us, so we watched it as if it was 'live'. One of my mates got into it so much that he 'accidentally' gave one of my other mates a fat lip when he was mimicking Bruno's best punch. |
