go for it-even if you have a chit year you can claim working tax credit to supplement income. in your first year if you buy a car for taxing you can claim against tax for it (100%) and then declare net income as your earning for workign tax credit ...

I dont think so !

Its mostly private work here (Belfast) so drivers are self employed and pay the company depot rent. You have insurance, PSV your car and the upkeep of your car along with petrol.

========
Radio £80 per week going rate ...PassengerTaxi insurance , Taxi Mot on your car (it is diff to a car mot) , Taxi Plate cost , tyres, + repoairs ..
Car will probably do 1500 miles per week
150k miles in 2 years ..

cunnybobbler--
you can agree a fixed price with a Private Hire cab .
Think what you would want to pay , phone up a Private Hire and say "I have £x for somebody to drive me to London on Xday at ( whatever time you want to set off )" .
They will then blow it out on the Air and a cabby has the option of saying
"YES, I will take that job "

if i wasn't banned from driving i've always thought one off jobs would be a good job. If there was a taxi company in my village everyone would use it - for visits to local pubs for lunch, evening, airport transfers, to get a train.... everything. Everyone would use it, so long as you were reliable. Could just do evenings and weekends and mornings(airports) as a start and still do a normal 9-5 job. Only worry are expenses imo.... presuming you do it all legit. Do you sudddenly have to pay business rates instead of normal council tax? Insurance through the roof? Petrol of course. Could suddenly find you need to take £100 a week to break even.

Still, it bugs me that my parents wanted to go to a local "bistro" pub 3 miles up the road in middle of december for their anniversary. last year they paid £12 each way for a taxi, because it came from local town it cost more. This year they asked our neighbour for a lift there and then walked back!!! In the fkin snow. Just seemed madness to me, If someone would've given them a lift both ways for fifteen quid they'd've bitten their hand off. Seemed like a great business oppo to me.

Was up in Reeth (pop. a few thousnd) 18 months ago (Joe Jordan will know it) and needed to get back to Kirkby Stephen about 23 miles away to get a train get back to London. Me and the missus had walked there and there were no buses returning because of it being a bank holiday. Asked around about how to get back - they suggested knocking on someones door who was the village "taxi driver". No answer. I rang up and was told £50 but not today. Was in the pub, and simply HAD to get back. missing the train was not an option. Young local lad behind the bar, so I asked him if he, or anyone he knew, would give us a lift back for £40. His mate who was a student bit my hand off. I must've looked like a right brash London w.anker, but I just had to get that train, missing work the next day would've cost me a lot more than forty quid. What a business opportunity (if the underlying costs are not too high, which I suspect they are).

went to bournemouth a few months ago for a p.ss up for my mates thirtieth. Mates' brother's wife went in to labour at about 2am while he was cutting shapes on the dance floor. He got taxi from bournemouth to london. must've cost him £200. What a great job that is.

Fk the £3.50 fares for p.ssed up teens from town centre to council estates. couldn't be bothered with that.

he had to leave his motorbike in bournemouth because he was p.ssed up. would've been tempted to kip in the car and offer him a lift back for another ton when he sobered up. Could even sleep in a hotel or something. you're going back anyway

alot of it is the inflexibility and lack of trust etc. theres loads of times id pay say £20 for someone to drive me somewhere then pick me up later and drive me home. doesnt sound alot but the taxi fares would only be about £8 each way so £16. but i get the bus instead cos its so much easier and taxi drivers are so grumpy its annoying. maybe thered be a market for low cost friendly local drivers. ones who dont start huffing and puffing if you take more than 3 seconds to get in/out and dont deliberately drive at 1mph uphill to try to stretch the fare out as much as possible. also its annoying when they ask you which way to go, theyre a driver lol they must know which way to go. they only ask so they can see if they can go the long way round to eek out another 20p. i know quite a few people who hate using cabs and prefer the bus.

Me and two mates were at Heathrow a couple of months ago. We needed to get back to mine (about 12 miles away, and not towards London). They quoted us £70.

lol@ taxi drivers "earning 100k a year"

I should think nowadays even the well established long hours working black cabbies would be VERY lucky to clear 35k a year after tax and all ex's etc. It's a hugely competitive game accross most of the country.

Some of the companies that have airport contracts etc can make v good money though but does anyone really think the average asian cabbie earns much for his 55 hour week??

I would think it's one of those jobs that the market is saturated.

An 'attractive' job, with not a lot of skill, which a lot of people will fall into
when jobs and times are hard

Not regulated enough imo, also to many foreign drivers. Recently an asian driver hit a co-workers car, no claim could be made because the taxi driver had no tax, no insurance! the council in charge was good old Manchester City Council always guaranteed to balls up.
