go for it-even if you have a chit year you can claim working tax credit to supplement income. in your first year if you buy a car for taxing you can claim against tax for it (100%) and then declare net income as your earning for workign tax credit

Can't believe you could earn that much tbh, one way to Manc. airport is about £50 minus fuel, minus what a firm takes off you leaves what ? and you'll only get one a day average surely.

I did it in the mid 70s for about 6 months, it paid well back then. That was in Chatham in Kent, a very hilly town. I made more running people up hill to housing estates for minimum fares than I could doing long runs to London.

Pitfalls are drunks and fare dodgers.

Our drivers used to charge a fiver if somebody puked in it, which was for time lost cleaning it out. Must be worth at least £50 these days.

Apart from big cities, the taxi trade is dying a death. There are far more taxis on the road and less business than there was even 2 years ago. Many drivers are struggling to make a reasonable (£15k) profit. Insurance is sky high, office costs are about £75 pw and then you have diesel, repairs and twice a year MOTs by the local council, which cost a small fortune each time. Your charges are usually regulated by the local council, who have no idea of the true cost of a taxi fare. You'll also need to employ an accountant to do your tax returns every year, which can easily cost £750+.

If you are prepared to suffer drunks, possible 'runners' and the constant fear of attack, then go for it.......... Think carefully before you jump from your 'safe' job...... Taxi driving looks like a good alternative, but it's a very cut-throat business. Forget the tax credits - they don't help you out that much. And remember, if you're ill, or your car's off the road for any reason, you've got no income!!! And you can gaurantee that such things happen on your busiest shifts!!

I know several that make it pay Terry but its long unsociable hours.

There was a feature on the Jeremy Vine show 6 months about taxi drivers struggling during the recession. It seems the market is over saturated with drivers and people just don't have the cash to spend on taxi's. Of course we're now coming out of recession so now may be a perfect time to become one.

Why not give your local company a call and ask if their hiring and what their terms are?

Its mostly private work here (Belfast) so drivers are self employed and pay the company depot rent. You have insurance, PSV your car and the upkeep of your car along with petrol. I reckon you'd need to clear £800 to £1000 per week before you start making any money each week.

Report annie. • January 4, 2010 5:12 PM GMT
They must make a good wage in London, as, apart from Central London, you can never pick up a black cab. You hardly see any and when you do they never have their sign on. This is very annoying when it is pouring with rain, cold etc and you are stuck waiting for a bus. If they do not want the outer London business, why do they not let others that do?

One thing, among many, that I loved in Brighton was that there were loads of cabs. Loads of cab ranks and easy to hire in the street for when the bus does not come or you have heavy shopping etc.

ive been a cab driver off and on for 15 years and i certainly dont do it for the money .In the provinces you will need to work about 60 hours a week to earn about 17,000 a year .
in most parts of the country there are far too many cabs and most of the tariffs are well underpriced .Fares may seem expensive to people but when broken down they are meagre and are aimed at the lowest income groups .
You have to take into account that you are not going to take the same amount of money on a tuesday night as on a busy saturday night (which seem to be quite rare nowadays )
some drivers may tell you that they have earned good money but you will probably find that they have done the equivalent of two years work in one year ,you can only work 80 hours a week for so long
Airport runs ? The going rate for a journey to heathrow is 100 pounds (240 miles round trip ) 5 hours driving assuming the m25 is clear ....probably about 40 pounds profit ...hardly big money

you can agree a fixed price with a Private Hire cab .
Think what you would want to pay , phone up a Private Hire and say "I have £x for somebody to drive me to London on Xday at ( whatever time you want to set off )" .
They will then blow it out on the Air and a cabby has the option of saying
"YES, I will take that job "
Report positively4thsteet • January 5, 2010 2:27 AM GMT
if i wasn't banned from driving i've always thought one off jobs would be a good job. If there was a taxi company in my village everyone would use it - for visits to local pubs for lunch, evening, airport transfers, to get a train.... everything. Everyone would use it, so long as you were reliable. Could just do evenings and weekends and mornings(airports) as a start and still do a normal 9-5 job. Only worry are expenses imo.... presuming you do it all legit. Do you sudddenly have to pay business rates instead of normal council tax? Insurance through the roof? Petrol of course. Could suddenly find you need to take £100 a week to break even.

Still, it bugs me that my parents wanted to go to a local "bistro" pub 3 miles up the road in middle of december for their anniversary. last year they paid £12 each way for a taxi, because it came from local town it cost more. This year they asked our neighbour for a lift there and then walked back!!! In the fkin snow. Just seemed madness to me, If someone would've given them a lift both ways for fifteen quid they'd've bitten their hand off. Seemed like a great business oppo to me.

Was up in Reeth (pop. a few thousnd) 18 months ago (Joe Jordan will know it) and needed to get back to Kirkby Stephen about 23 miles away to get a train get back to London. Me and the missus had walked there and there were no buses returning because of it being a bank holiday. Asked around about how to get back - they suggested knocking on someones door who was the village "taxi driver". No answer. I rang up and was told £50 but not today. Was in the pub, and simply HAD to get back. missing the train was not an option. Young local lad behind the bar, so I asked him if he, or anyone he knew, would give us a lift back for £40. His mate who was a student bit my hand off. I must've looked like a right brash London w.anker, but I just had to get that train, missing work the next day would've cost me a lot more than forty quid. What a business opportunity (if the underlying costs are not too high, which I suspect they are).

alot of it is the inflexibility and lack of trust etc. theres loads of times id pay say £20 for someone to drive me somewhere then pick me up later and drive me home. doesnt sound alot but the taxi fares would only be about £8 each way so £16. but i get the bus instead cos its so much easier and taxi drivers are so grumpy its annoying. maybe thered be a market for low cost friendly local drivers. ones who dont start huffing and puffing if you take more than 3 seconds to get in/out and dont deliberately drive at 1mph uphill to try to stretch the fare out as much as possible. also its annoying when they ask you which way to go, theyre a driver lol they must know which way to go. they only ask so they can see if they can go the long way round to eek out another 20p. i know quite a few people who hate using cabs and prefer the bus.
