go for it-even if you have a chit year you can claim working tax credit to supplement income. in your first year if you buy a car for taxing you can claim against tax for it (100%) and then declare net income as your earning for workign tax credit

Kirkham ?
Can't believe you could earn that much tbh, one way to Manc. airport is about £50 minus fuel, minus what a firm takes off you leaves what ? and you'll only get one a day average surely. |

Anyone done or doing this. What are the pitfalls etc???
I did it in the mid 70s for about 6 months, it paid well back then. That was in Chatham in Kent, a very hilly town. I made more running people up hill to housing estates for minimum fares than I could doing long runs to London. Pitfalls are drunks and fare dodgers. Our drivers used to charge a fiver if somebody puked in it, which was for time lost cleaning it out. Must be worth at least £50 these days. |

London black cab drivers take home 70k a year I heard, which is probably less than the previous 2k per week estimate, but still superb.

Apart from big cities, the taxi trade is dying a death. There are far more taxis on the road and less business than there was even 2 years ago. Many drivers are struggling to make a reasonable (£15k) profit. Insurance is sky high, office costs are about £75 pw and then you have diesel, repairs and twice a year MOTs by the local council, which cost a small fortune each time. Your charges are usually regulated by the local council, who have no idea of the true cost of a taxi fare. You'll also need to employ an accountant to do your tax returns every year, which can easily cost £750+.
If you are prepared to suffer drunks, possible 'runners' and the constant fear of attack, then go for it.......... Think carefully before you jump from your 'safe' job...... Taxi driving looks like a good alternative, but it's a very cut-throat business. Forget the tax credits - they don't help you out that much. And remember, if you're ill, or your car's off the road for any reason, you've got no income!!! And you can gaurantee that such things happen on your busiest shifts!! |

I realise its not what it was. Every job I ve had in last 10 yrs the older 1 s have said the same thing. Its not like it used to be.
Lots of competition whatever you do. And as for drunks and fare dodgers, I only want to do this whilst building up my own airport transfers business. |

I realise its not what it was. Every job I ve had in last 10 yrs the older 1 s have said the same thing. Its not like it used to be. Lots of competition whatever you do. Then maybe they're trying to tell you something??? Pity you're not prepared to listen to sense.... And as for drunks and fare dodgers, I only want to do this whilst building up my own airport transfers business. Just tell the drunks and dodgers that you're just doing it while waiting for another business.... I'm sure they'll treat you with more respect than other drivers..... ARE YOU LIVING IN THE REAL WORLD????? |

Joe le taxi drivers have to be amongst the most miserable knuts in the world. "But its only 5 minutes walk" "Ive waited an hour for this" Not to mention the thinly concealed racism.

taxi drivers are odd. i once got home and was counting out the fare (about 9 pounds) in pound coins cos i had a pocket full of em and wanted to get rid of em. he said ok il take 7 pounds and i said "7 pounds are you sure??? ive got enough to pay the full fare" he said give me 7 pounds now please, so i gave him 7 pounds...then he said get out now please. mad as a fecking bowl of frogs.

The advice about getting working tax credits if you are self-employed is good.
I only do 20 hours per week tops, Mrs Londis the same. Neither of us shows a profit of more than 4k yet the government tops up our earnings to 15k. It's brilliant. I spent £2100 on a camera for 'work' and the taxpayer effectively paid every penny :-) |

I know a few taxi drivers actually
The ones that've done it for years have made a fair whack .. covered in gold .. though one i know that's only done it for 5 years doesn't even own his own cab .. he has to rent that too |

I know several that make it pay Terry but its long unsociable hours.
There was a feature on the Jeremy Vine show 6 months about taxi drivers struggling during the recession. It seems the market is over saturated with drivers and people just don't have the cash to spend on taxi's. Of course we're now coming out of recession so now may be a perfect time to become one. Why not give your local company a call and ask if their hiring and what their terms are? Its mostly private work here (Belfast) so drivers are self employed and pay the company depot rent. You have insurance, PSV your car and the upkeep of your car along with petrol. I reckon you'd need to clear £800 to £1000 per week before you start making any money each week. |

ive got plenty of money but half the time black cabs wont stop for me, presumably cos i wear jeans and t shirts etc. so now ive pretty much given up bothering and just walk or get the bus. maybe if they werent so stuck up theyd make more money?
|
|
By:
They must make a good wage in London, as, apart from Central London, you can never pick up a black cab. You hardly see any and when you do they never have their sign on. This is very annoying when it is pouring with rain, cold etc and you are stuck waiting for a bus. If they do not want the outer London business, why do they not let others that do?
One thing, among many, that I loved in Brighton was that there were loads of cabs. Loads of cab ranks and easy to hire in the street for when the bus does not come or you have heavy shopping etc. |

As for contacting local firms that was exactly my intention. With the hope that I could sell a few cars to the drivers I get to know. Work in car sales at mo as I said so between the 3 things was hoping it may well just work oh with a little positivity too ;-)

ive been a cab driver off and on for 15 years and i certainly dont do it for the money .In the provinces you will need to work about 60 hours a week to earn about 17,000 a year .
in most parts of the country there are far too many cabs and most of the tariffs are well underpriced .Fares may seem expensive to people but when broken down they are meagre and are aimed at the lowest income groups . You have to take into account that you are not going to take the same amount of money on a tuesday night as on a busy saturday night (which seem to be quite rare nowadays ) some drivers may tell you that they have earned good money but you will probably find that they have done the equivalent of two years work in one year ,you can only work 80 hours a week for so long Airport runs ? The going rate for a journey to heathrow is 100 pounds (240 miles round trip ) 5 hours driving assuming the m25 is clear ....probably about 40 pounds profit ...hardly big money |
