better still get as many loans & credit cards as poss, max them out and go bankrupt.......just ask moneysavingexpert
Report Fenway • December 31, 2009 8:26 AM GMT
I think most people time it badly, they don't spend it because they think they might need it 'some day'. And by the time they realise they have more than enough to see them through they are too old to be able to enjoy it.

The person who drops dead the day after spending the last penny is a very wise bird indeed.
Report Ken Masters • December 31, 2009 8:41 AM GMT
Probably a good idea to buy everything off the duty-free trolley then, imo.
Report Bridgeboy • December 31, 2009 8:42 AM GMT
Perhaps they have kids. . .
Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 8:46 AM GMT

OK, I'll get this started for you...

Why would they need an excuse?

Thank me after 200.

Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 9:38 AM GMT
anyway, the premise of the thread was, why are old people with plenty of money, so careful with it
Report Shaky • December 31, 2009 9:39 AM GMT
see these old folk who live like paupers, then die and leave £5million to a cats home or an art gallery? jeez, makes me mad.

Depending on how you define "lower" of course it is.

Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 10:16 AM GMT
so how do you explain it?
Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 10:16 AM GMT
senility wouldn't be so bad
Report Gene Hackman • December 31, 2009 10:19 AM GMT
What should I do with my money?
I'm 50+ and still working and earn about 50thou a year.
I,sorry we,have about 130thou in the bank and I have a decent pension to take when I'm 60.
What's the formula?
How much should I spend now?
I don't like the thought of being old and the thought of being old and skint terrifies me.
Report Kevin1958 • December 31, 2009 10:20 AM GMT
Its quite simple to explain it. If somebody tells you one day they have a cholesterol level in excess of 5 and 2 days later they have a cholesterol level of 2 there are various scenarios. They could be mistaken, the readings could be incorrect or they may not be telling you the truth.
Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 10:22 AM GMT
you can send me some gene

yeah kev, well he wouldn't lie and is adamant the reading matched what the docs had told him before he tested again. and since a 2 day diet he keeps getting this new figure
Report canaryboy • December 31, 2009 10:23 AM GMT
but if he is going senile, it means i have a decent shout at the cash without the grief

the perfect scenario

Eddie Reid was perhaps more notable as a recluse than a hermit, but when The Scotsman reported the death of the 84 year old retired farmer in 2002, it described him as The £17m hermit, after revealing he had left a £27 million fortune in his will

My Grandad was in a syndicate that won 9m on the lottery about 5 years ago, he received 1/2m as his share.
We as a family have never really had money like this and ave always had to work for what weve got.
My Nan died years ago and he has remarried, my Mum is his only child still living, his wife has 3 children.
This money has already caused problems and as he is now 85 and has got Alzheimers I am hoping he can spend as much as possible before he goes.
It will cause untold arguments/fights once he has gone, Ive told him many times to just blow as much as poss to stop all this happening but I dont think he realises how much it really is.

Worst is the 70odds who die now, from the generation of debt stigma and not quite graping how things have changed. Living like paupers and thinking they will save their offspring with a £24k shareout... amongst 10.

I disagree, you could liquidise a camel and get it through the eye of a needle, very slowly mind you but it could be done and since the kingdm of heaven does not exist no-one will be going there so
It's actually easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle.

If you knew the exact day you were going to die, which would enable you to budget accordingly, blowing the last few quid the day before, would you want to know?

I'm sure he believed he could TRY to take it with him....
