How is the Q setting going?
By:
Nirvana
When: 11 Dec 09 10:02
Guidelines for setting Qs

1. Players are asked to provide three Qs on each of the 16 categories, ie 48 Qs in total, by Monday, December 14. All three Qs for each category should be different, eg. on Sport, players should provide one Q each on, say, Boxing, Cricket and Football, rather than all three on the same sport.

2. The 16 categories are:

ART - Painting / Sculpture / Photography / Pottery etc.
FILMS & CINEMA
FOOD & DRINK
GEOGRAPHY
HISTORY
LITERATURE
MUSIC - Classical / Opera / Musicals / Jazz etc.
NATURAL WORLD
PEOPLE & PLACES
POLITICS & CURRENT AFFAIRS
POP MUSIC
POT LUCK
RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY
SCIENCE
SPORT
TELEVISION

3. Avoid the following:

(i) FFF Qs, which are a test of typing speed/connection rather than knowledge. Qs should be testing and not too easy.

(ii) Vague Qs such as, 'Where was X born?'. Replace with 'In which city....?' or 'In which country...?'.

(iii) Qs with fewer choices than a multi, eg. 'In which province of Ireland.....?'. Obviously only four choices.

(iv) Qs requring multiple answers, eg. 'Name the seven dwarfs'. Long-winded and dull. Answers requiring 1-3 words are far preferable.

(v) Qs beginning with 'Why...?' or 'How....?' as it is unclear how long answers need to be be.

4. Use (or omit) clues to make Qs easier/more difficult. Eg. a Literature Q:

Q. Which author created the character Roderick Alleyn? (Difficult)

...becomes...

Q. Which New Zealand author created the quintessentially English detective, Roderick Alleyn, who featured in 32 of her novels? (Easier)

Three extra clues in that one, so even if players have never heard of Roderick Alleyn, they might know that Ngaio Marsh is a female Kiwi author who writes detective novels.

5. Qs should be labelled Q1, Q3 and Q5, with Q3 being multiple choice (6 options, A-F). Here's an example of what the Qs for the History category should look like (note the different eras and countries referred to):

HISTORY

Q1. Which historical figure did Fanya Kaplan try to assassinate in Aug 1918? Answer: (Vladimir Ilyich) Lenin

Q3. Which French duchy was created in 911 by the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte and granted to the Viking leader Rollo?

(a) Aquitaine
(b) Bourgogne
(c) Bourbon
(d) Normandy
(e) Orleans
(f) Valois

Answer: (d) Normandy

Q5. The military power of which religious order was broken by its defeat to a Polish-Lithuanian army at the Battle of Grunwald of 1410? Answer: The Teutonic Knights

6. Qs should be original, not copied from websites (unreliable) or books (soon out of date). Using these sources we also see the same old Qs cropping up repeatedly in quizzes. Wikipedia is obviously a useful source of Qs but info from it should be checked using other websites.

7. Please check your Qs before submitting them and pay attention to spelling and punctuation.

8. Qs should be submitted as follows:

SEASON 2010 PREMIERSHIP QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to jake2130@lycos.com

SEASON 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to lozzyquiz@googlemail.com

SEASON COLA LEAGUE QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to manofmanymoods@hótmail.com

Give yourself a good few hours Coachy.

Took me about 20 mins for each category. The m/c are the worst, as you can't C&P the answers as you can for the others.

Drag, we're looking at the end of Jan/early Feb. Depends on when we get all the Qs submitted and then checked, sorted, etc. Can't start until all that's done.

GvG, good idea to do a template like that. Saves lots of time.

don't know to be honest, just never going to finish all the questions off. and the amount of effort to get these questions written isn't worth the return for me
And when i think about it, theres always a quiz on if i wanted to play so it's no big deal really
By:
The Dragon
When: 12 Dec 09 13:41
go on dont give up , ive got mine done and it took me ages to type em up.

be a shame if your not in it.

i can do some of your questions if you like as will have some spare time over christmas.

tell me which ones you want me to do

Im thinking the same andy. I sat down last week to go through the list of questions, and it took me about an hour to decide upon 3 art questions and 3 classical music questions, then i gave up.
I find it impossible to write questions on subjects I know nothing about as I have no idea what is too obvious or too obscure.
Might just leave this quiz league to the big boys :D

I think thats quite poor guys to be honest. It isnt easy making questions but to give up because its become a bit tough is a poor excuse and not to get the return. I mean others made questions on the most oscure questions for you guys all season last season, imagine how tought they found it!... but they did it.

I think you guys should give it another go tbf. Even if for no other reason than to give something back to the leagues for everybody elese commitment to putting Q`s together for your own league games last season.

Just dont give in guys, if the questions are not great that cant be helped (tell the division question master you struggled with a, b, c subjects)

come on one last big effort :)

thanks for the offer dragon, but i would never expect anyone to do the required work for me, it's been tough with 48 questions, when the extra 50 come into play it'll be just as difficult, and im not wanting to do that.

shaky.. yeah, and we have a quiz of our own to play :D have you seen the new system they implemented?

bjk.. as far as im concerned, last season the question setters weren't forced to write questions, they volunteered.. i put my bit in by playing the matches(which was all that was asked of us)
this year the format doesnt suit me so i'll end up losing week after week, and i don't want to put all that effort of writing the questions, to not have fun during the season
By:
Shaky

whats the new system andy? ive missed the last few days, wich is a shame since they had the £100 draws on.... you had any luck in them yet?
