I provide a variety of bird food in my garden.Typically, there'll be about 16 finches and several of a number of other species at any given time.As a RSPB member I'm well aware of the decline in house sparrow numbers but in the annual 'Big Birdwatch' I normally report 4 or 5 sparrows. This winter,I haven't seen a single sparrow for ages.Anyone seen any?
its a sad sign of the times with regard to the seemingly decreasing bird population, well, where i live, your fortunate to see any bird! remember as a kid going into nearby woodland and nearby farms and seeing lapwings, finches, tits, even skylarks. I would have thought many birds wouldve been attracted to housing estates simply to obtain food

I put food out in the garden for them and see plenty. Have to keep an eye out for pigeons nicking the food though because they'll drive the sparrows off.

Used to have sparrows nesting under our roof eaves but whilst having plastic soffits installed hasn't helped them, there has to be another factor in their decline.
