Brought home to me when I return to The Elephant and Castle now.

Completely different demagraph to the area, mainly different Culture and customs but people are, generally, just getting on with their lives.

Pubs we knew are mainly closed. English shops have, generally, gone but replaced by Afro-Caribbean places which represent the area more accurately now.

Even the view from The Walworth Road is totally different as the tower blocks recently built on the E and C roundabout contain penthouses worth £2,000,000 and the area looks quite different.

Our time has gone and now it is someone elses.

Doubtless in 30 years time it will all have changed again.

Should one ever return to the area they loved and grew up in?

Yes! but be prepared for change, particularly if the Boys Club or school or their house is/are no longer even there...

As anyone ( of a certain age) returned and what do they think of their former beloved birthplace?

Went back there recently and noticed a large South American population.

Mate. Everything changes - sometimes for the worse, sometimes for better. I've lived all over and occasionally revisit - just makes me realise I'm getting older!

ah yes, but some things stay the same.

i remember popping into my old secondary school, one summers nite after work. i walked around the playing fields and the temporary portakabin changing rooms and class rooms were still there - 12 yrs after i left!

my school used to be so strict on spelling, so it came as a great surprise and disappointment to me, that they managed to spell the word permanent, t e m p o r a r y.

its strange how people grow more attached to buildings than people. the places become part of yr life. i still dont get how football clubs can leave their grounds, where they have usually played for all of their existence, with no objections.
