Any gardening experts around? I got a real xmas tree yesterday, and I've put it into one of those
bases you can pour water into. The advice given with the tree was to chop a couple of inches off the stem before putting it into the base and watering it.

I haven't chopped anything off (I don't own anything remotely capable of hacking thru a tree trunk) so I just put the tree up, and I've filled the base with water.

Q : Is my tree going to die of thirst or is it quite capable of extracting the water?

You will find that it will need water again quite soon but after that once every three days will be sufficient.

If you've got a drill put a few holes around the base.

A man is not a real man unless he carries around an axe

Living in a city flat, I find there's not much call for axes and saws ;-)

You can still carry around an axe living in the city

City High-Rise, eh? Pop a cap in the base of the trunk, or stab repeatedly with hypodermic. Either way it should be able to soak some water up.

I just take the odd leak in mine, ensures it will thrive.

That is quite odd, alright.
