why doesn't the last employer want to give one?
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:09 PM GMT
ex manager dont like her
nothing to do with her job just dont like her
Report The Magic Flea November 17, 2009 1:10 PM GMT
tough if they decide to check her references, she's fecked. She should explain to them why she wasn't liked
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:10 PM GMT
there must be some guidelines
to ensure if her last job no ref was forthcoming
Report Bamboo November 17, 2009 1:11 PM GMT
Thats a tough one, best not offer it up as reference,be honest, ask other people/jobs she has done
Report big-game-player November 17, 2009 1:12 PM GMT
why did she leave her last job if you dont mind me asking?
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:13 PM GMT
her new job has phoned her last place of work with no joy from her last manager
Report Bamboo November 17, 2009 1:13 PM GMT
It does annoy me these references when the person writting them can be an absolute blooming so n so who has done nothing else in the life apart from working at that particular company
Report DublinSlim1 November 17, 2009 1:14 PM GMT
How about a reference from another boss at her old job?
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:14 PM GMT
she was being put down to 3 days a week
so she decided to take a bit of redundancy and go and try her luck
elsewhere
Report sibaroni November 17, 2009 1:14 PM GMT
She gives a tremendous blow job, if that helps.
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:15 PM GMT
cheers dublin
we are having to go down that road
but that wouldnt effect her new job will it

well she should just say to her new company, we didnt get on but i was efficient and could hold the lollypop as well as the next woman :)

but she should say that, she has no reservations whatsoever about what her ex manager has to say and if they wont giver her a reference it says a lot about them not her... and then ask the person who wants the reference...although not in a sly way

"even if you personally didnt like someone would you not give a reference?" when they say yes.. just say.. well that should tell you everything about that person, because i wouldnt be worried in the slightest bit about what they had to say about my work.
Report DublinSlim1 November 17, 2009 1:16 PM GMT
No, if she gets the reference, then gets the job.. all done.
Report Bamboo November 17, 2009 1:16 PM GMT
what about me welshie thats what i said :-(
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:17 PM GMT
no cant get another reference from her old job
there was only one manager and she wont play ball
Report Bamboo November 17, 2009 1:18 PM GMT
you are not allowed to write a reference if it is going to show somebody in a bad light.they are there to help people not hinder them
Report Bamboo November 17, 2009 1:19 PM GMT
honesty is by far the best approach failing that you have to lie and make one up,travel abroad or own business or get a friend to help you out
Report WELSHIE1 November 17, 2009 1:20 PM GMT
but the law does state an ex employer does not have to give a refence if they dont want to
Report HarryCrumb November 17, 2009 1:20 PM GMT
Just say it the company policy not to give any references. Some companies do this now to try to avoid disputes.

TBF she was fked the minute she started all that "Bell Du Jour" malarkey.
Report orioles November 17, 2009 1:32 PM GMT
I would get together a couple of personal references, explain the position with the former employer and suggest that perhaps a probationary period would help allay any reservations the new employer might have.

Lots of companies now dont give references.
If they give a good reference and the person turns out to not be so good they may be sued by the new employer.
If they give a bad reference and the person doesn't get the job they may get sued by the ex employee.

Don't think people generally give bad references - either a good one or none.
Report punterfleecer November 17, 2009 6:18 PM GMT
you can actually give a bad reference

i.e. the ex-employer is allowed to state how many times the person was off sick in the last year

"sucks like a hoover and goes like a steam train"

There, stick that down.
Report Live Forever November 17, 2009 6:20 PM GMT

Feck, should read whole thread before posting poor joke
Report 28dogs November 17, 2009 8:25 PM GMT
Employer cannot refuse to give a reference.

Most if not all employers do nothing more than confirm dates of employment and number of days off sick in the last 12 months but that is sufficient for the new employer's purposes. The days of commenting on performance, personality etc are gone for the reasons mentioned above.
