On Vista its 'sleep' and 'close down', do you mean that?

If you press hibernate, your PC crawls into a corner and digs itself into a hole for 5 months.

(I've always wondered that).

Always wondered this.

Does hibernate shut all programs down to conserve extra energy? Does sleep keep them open, making it the returning-shortly option? When I was an inquisitive child I'd have cracked this on Day 2. Just can't be arsed now.

If you choose hibernate you can never be sure it will wake up again.
It may be dead when you open the shoebox in spring.

Hibernate stops the disks from spinning, sleep just... I don't know what sleep does, but it doesn't stop the disks spinning.

Hibernate shuts the computer down but saves the state of the computer
Sleep pauses your computer and goes on very low power
