I am one of 5% of the population in the not so elite group that left (I was expelled) from school with no qualifications whatsoever.

I never sat for any G.C.E.'s

Does this mean that 95% of the country is smarter than me ?

I think not. :)

The reason behind the expulsion

My dad (RIP) was seriously ill with heart problems by 1961. My mother was a housewife and had never worked. I was 10, my sister was 8.

In the summer of 1963 I did my dad no favours by passing my 11+ and getting shipped to a technical school. As a fast growing lad it cost him a fortune to keep me in a school uniform, white shirts, briefcase etc. I actually spent the winter of 1964 with no jacket on. I was carrying the 1963 term jacket, slung over my shoulder, that was far too small to wear. I never realised until 1965 how ill my dad was. He had to change jobs, which cost him a cut in pay, and had to sell his beloved motorbike combination as the doctors said the strain for the steering was too much for his heart.

I n December 1966 asked him to buy me out of school at Easter 1967, the earliest I could leave. It cost £10 back then, I have no idea why. He said
