Basically instead of putting on his shoes , going down the bookies and taking money from them he prefers wordsmithing.
No tax, no insurance , just plain cash readily available for him at the top of the road, but for some reason he gets more enjoyment out of writing claptrap about horses.
Who in their right monds cannot see through this ?

There have always been, always be tipsters. Papers need them. Casual Saturday punters love it.
If you were a pro punter and a paper offered you a guaranteed income doing what you are already doing on top of the profit you make anyway, you'd be made to turn it down.

He wouldn't be a pro punter once he took up that offer.
So the incentive isnt there anymore.
Once you take away the hunger , no point in hunting.

I shared a train ride with a sporting press tipster once, he is still dashing around the paddocks for the post, even been on here a few times.....
Between Galway and Dublin he enlightened me on every massive gamble he had engineered and the huge bets he had on DW s melbourne cup winner months before. Upon arriving at Ceannt , (which in the circumstances was very appropriate) i realised he was nothing but a sad aftertimer eeking a living out of the generousity of coolmore and sticking a recording device up the nose of whoever he could at the track.

don't keep records of ts selections. claims his ante-post record for profit on investment is. 2019 278% 2020 83% 2021 67% assume that's for all flat and jumps races, as it sure isn't for cheltenham.

Cheltenham is 4 days of the year. If you follow someone who isn't backing the horse he thinks will necessarily win the you have to follow him for 12 months. If thats your thing.

Does he get the option of no bet? I know a few have come out of the Triumph and ran well subsequently, but Quilixios himself has ran three times since, and been beaten three times since. The form looks light years away from winning a Champion Hurdle. With any each-way bet you have to have some hope that the horse can actually win.

Presumably, he has put up Sir Gerhard for the Supreme. Given that non runner no bet hasn't kicked in this looks a very risky bet. Perhaps the sheep should have stayed in the pen. The logical move would be to go Ballymore. It looks the weaker race, trip shouldn't be an issue, and Mullins has nothing obvious for the race. He isn't a trainer who usually wastes bullets.

Yes, Sir Gerhard for the Supreme. Segal addresses this point directly, He acknowledges many think Sir Gerhard will go to the Ballymore but Segal thinks he will run in the Supreme.
(Segal is not quite alone in this. Separately, Ruby Walsh on the Paddy Power podcast has also said Sir Gerhard looks like a solid 2-miler.)

Ruby Walsh, the man for whom no dollop of salt is big enough.
Imagine if he was still riding he would be moving mountains to make sure Sir Gerhard runs in the Ballymore. He would be saying he was completely outpaced by Kilcruit and needs a trip.
Let's face it he should have a pretty good idea where all the Mullins horses are going, but does he relay that information? Not likely, he only pipes up to contradict popular opinion. Isn't Galopin Des Champs his other party piece this year? How quickly he has forgotten that when he was riding it was all about the easiest opportunity.
He didn't care two hoots about punters when he was riding, and still doesn't.

Yep, Walsh said that he thinks he has plenty of speed, he cites the Bumper where he points out that many concentrated on the finish where he came back somewhat to Kilcruit, but he suggested that he was entitled to tire after an injection of pace coming down the hill won the race.
He has a point in that regard, they were all in a bunch one minute and by the time they turned in were strung out like washing.

I think most people were of the opinion that Blackmore nicked the Festival Bumper. What was Walsh's explanation for Punchestown, and the fact Kilcruit has subsequently done nothing for the form. In an average year it might be worth a crack at the Supreme, but this year is it worth running for fourth place when the Ballymore looks a far easier option?

Yes, the whole Sir Gerhard thing depends on second-guessing Willie Mullins on who will run in the Supreme and who in the Ballymore. However, on that note, Segal does say:-
Dysart Dynamo is clearly hugely talented too and given he was quite keen at Punchestown last time, he could easily be the Mullins Supreme horse.
However, he comes into the Constitution Hill category of having beaten much lesser horses on bad ground and the fact that he started his career over two and a quarter miles suggests to me that he should have no problems over the Ballymore trip. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if that was the direction he took.

That completely ignores Dysart Dynamo's run style to go forward, and race freely. He also has pedigree which would suggest a shorter trip as well. I think the fact he started over longer trip is pretty irrelevant. Things have moved on quite a bit since then.
What are the top horses that Sir Gerhard has beaten? I would say the other three have better form, whatever ground they achieved it on.
It strikes as a very poor case, the sort it might just be worth making for a 33/1 shot.

I would be interested to know the name of that horse as his half sister, Dysart Diamond, has actually disappointed each time she has raced beyond 2m2f.
Interesting that despite their man, Ruby Walsh, putting up Sir Gerhard for the Supreme, they were quite happy to be longest price. Even they don't seem to believe him.

Has Ruby put up Sir Gerhard for the Supreme? He's said he thinks SG is a 2-miler but that is not quite the same thing.
If you are that convinced and/or bothered then maybe do an e/w double with DD and SG in the two novice races.

Hi DD the half brother is Truckers Lodge, trained by Nicholls. They are both by Westerner, with different dams, but both dams were by Accordian. Captain cutter who died as a 7 yo is also linked in the same way and had won up to 2m5 on good to soft and heavy when trained by Henderson. The other notable horse is Pipe’s Eamon An Cnoic who’s best racing post rating came when winning a 2m 4 race on heavy.
It looks like the Ballymore would be perfect on pedigree, and he will be best with cut. It’s also worth noting that most supreme horses step up to 3 miles in time including Champagne fever also trained by Willie so nothing wrong with 2m at this stage, but it’s just worth keeping this in mind. Supreme is for stayers, Ballymore for quicker champion hurdle types weirdly, like Faugheen.

To be considered a half brother you need to have the same dam. Truckers Lodge is the same cross, but might well have more stamina in his pedigree through the female line. I doubt that Dysart Dynamo will go anywhere near the Ballymore for the reasons given, but clearly not that long to go before we find out.

I work in the same building as a guy that goes around bragging he has 7 kids by 5 different mums. I think he’d be heartbroken if you told him they were not half brothers and sisters because it only counts if they have the same mother!
For obvious reasons, I go out of my way to avoid him as much as possible:)

In horseracing half-siblings have the same dam. Geneticists might disagree but that is the established terminology of the horsey business.
Because sires are, well, studs, they might have hundreds of runners from whom to draw conclusions. They'd probably be more reliable conclusions than guessing on the basis of just two or three (maternal) half-brothers or sisters.
But in racing, we look at the dam, partly because the sire is thought to be a known constant.

I’d agree with regards to following high profile tipsters normally but Fury Road went from hating Leopardstown to winning over Christmas. To me, that shows a big improvement from his hurdle form and looks a big danger. The only worry is if the cheek pieces had the desired affect, but will they third time now that the horse is used to them?

I agree with betting slips,he put 1 up for PP GC ridden by Tabitha for Josh Gifford and was available 70/80 for small £'s at 17.50pm on the Friday and he wasn't backing it. I know as I wanted to bet it but waited and next day was surprised to see he'd tipped it sophy not sweep up and lay back, only saying like.

There is no evidence that Segal is front-running Pricewise selections, and some indirect evidence that he is not. His predecessor complained he had to compete with the masses to get prices in the morning, and there have been no whistleblowers from amongst the satchel-swingers.

What that list and those prices show is that by and large, antepost betting is not worth the form study. It's not just Pricewise, it is all the pundits who commit to providing selections on a schedule.

You make a good point Ramruma - TS has to pick a selection for a given race and he has to do it on a particular day, because that is what his paper requires. That puts him at a huge disadvantage compared with us, because we can choose if we want to bet at all, and when we want to bet. People need to remember that when criticising his selections. Frankly, I would not have fancied putting one up for the Champion Hurdle, Ryanair or Turners this year.

Probably meant Zanahiyr who was the only 5yo who was competitive. Most people underestimate just how hard it is for a 5yo to compete with older horses at this level so he is a horse to note for next year.

Let's take another look at @ashleigh's handy list of Sir Tom's antepost tips on the morning of Gold Cup day.
Triumph Hurdle: Doctor Parnassus tipped at 14/1 now widely available at 20/1 County Hurdle: I Like to Move It 14/1 now 12/1 Albert Bartlett: Shantreusse 14/1 now 12/1 Albert Bartlett again: Falcon Eight 20/1 now 25/1 Gold Cup: Protektorat 14/1 now 9/1
So in only one race, the Gold Cup, has he beaten the price by any significant margin. This is not to have a pop at Sir Tom but at the changed nature of antepost betting and the Racing Post's artificial schedule.

His record is very poor on the antepost front but like cobra says he has to put these selections up on a certain day. Next year we should put a selection up on the same day he has to, and see if we get value and or a winner?
