The BBC now mentioning the possible named storm. Strangely their app and on line forecasts bear no resemblance to that. The charts this morning are concerning to say the least. IF (note the big if) they are accurate racing would definitely be in some jeopardy. Gusts 70-80 mph mentioned this morning for Tuesday moderating to "just" Gale force for Wednesday. Why ? Why this one week ffs.

the met office forecast i'm looking at doesn't look too bad for Tues but Wednesday looks decidedly iffy.

What met office ?
BBC are saying heavy rain Tuesday ? |
|
By:
^ rain isn't as much of a problem as high winds

Heavy rain Tuesday ......hhhhmmmmmm
Let's see Simon wriggle his way out of this one ![]() |

What do you mean ?
They haven't moved on in ten years and found any improvements in wind proof accommodation ? You will be telling us it's the wrong type of snow next ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It looks to be the same temporary structures used year in year out to me. They will be wind proof but only to a level. Also Tuesday morning looks a rotten day to be around town or making your way up to the track. I really don't care what the going is I just want it on !

Today's racing at the Cheltenham Festival meeting has been abandoned after high winds caused the tented village to be evacuated. managing director Edward Gillespie said: "We had a forecast last night indicating that wind speeds would gust over 50mph, up to and including 3pm this afternoon. At the moment they are predicting gusts on the Weds in the 45-50mph range between noon & 3pm. Obviously that is a guesstimate but............ |

With the rain that has fallen - all of which was in historic forecasts - and the rain that is currently forecast for next week it does beg the question as to why Claisse thought it necessary and appropriate to water selectively the week before last.
|
|
By:
Claisse needs the job.
All he does is tickle the BHA's bollox His decision is the most unreliable in racing. Owners, trainers and jockeys Do not spend their time Running or walking the track on The morning of the race for nothing Its the same wherever you go The going stick is not trusted either Go and walk the course yourself, its so variable |
|
By:
The days of walking the track Sunday morning are finished unless you have permission to do so.,slowly but surely the fun is been taken out of British racing.plenty of tracks now no longer let you go by the fences or go out in the middle they now encourage people to go who have no interest in horse racing ,those who do are not much use to them .
|
|
By:
To be fair to cheltenham they recognise that foxy
There is a one day when you can go down there About 11 a m and walk out on the course You can also go in the middle for the cross country Thats always a good guide because you cross Both tracks and the drainage area in the middle |
|
By:
You are spot on with encouragement though
Years ago i used to run round epsom Then one day i was stopped on the track Taken in and questioned by the anti terrorist unit Fecked if i knew charles was going to the derby that year |
|
By:
Yes I realise Cheltenham are pretty good with you been allowed in the middle depending on the underfoot conditions which is fair enough, didn’t know the still allowed you to walk the course in the days leading up to the festival,by the way 25 miles from the course damp and wet all night light rain now.
Hope we don’t get bad ground regardless of what preferences your horses have bad ground spoils everything. |

No mention of hail/ snow/ a flash of lightning followed by an enormous clap of thunder!!!! All just happened - if I was a bit techie I would download a copy of the white field adjoining my house - six miles from the course. |

Can anyone see the ground being called good to soft as the final call before the Supreme? Heavy looks a big price at 15 if the weather comes in tomorrow night? Soft at best you'd think.
|
|
By:
Depends what it's like tomorrow.
A dry warmish day and they'll have the sprinklers on by 4 o'clock. If it rains as per the forecast he will call soft as it is nowhere near as bad as last year |

Going stick reading was 6.2 on Sunday. Dropping day by day as the rain gets into the ground. I don’t expect today’s reading will be much different even though today is expected to stay dry.
It won’t take a lot of rain on Tuesday morning to push the stick reading to the sort of level we saw at the start of last year’s Festival (when the going was officially described as Heavy, Soft in places but subsequently revised to Soft, Heavy in places). Irish trainers will be licking their lips having waited all winter for the ground they’re likely to get at Cheltenham this week. My hope remains that the rain won’t fall in the large quantities predicted. |

How can their be so much variance
In the weather forecasting over there I got ponies that magically disappear Into their shed about ten minutes Before a bad storm And if the woodcocks are down from the hills We are going to get snow Its that fecking easy ....... |
