Track conditions currently reported as Good to Soft, Good in places on the Cheltenham website but that assessment is contradicted by the Turf Trax update which reports the going as being Good (Going Stick reading of 7.0) as of 11am today. The weather is described as unsettled with plenty of rain.

With Storm Freya closing in and plenty of rain forecast in the next week it makes you wonder why Simon Claisse thought it necessary to water selectively in the past week.

Going report updated on Cheltenham website at 12pm. Now Good, Good to Soft in places on all three tracks.

Genuine Good to Soft ground would be a terrific outcome and few trainers would have any complaints.

Tonight is going to be crucial. If forecast correct then tonight is when biggest amount of rain is due to fall. After that only showers till Tuesday.

Overnight deluge at Cheltenham according to Kim Bailey’s blog this morning. Claisse will be happy because I it takes pre-Festival watering out of the equation (even though, for no good reason, he decided to water selectively last week).
Expect today’s going update to show predominantly soft. |

My auntie Val lives right by the course and she said it HAMMERED down last night, and they got woken up several times by the rain. When she looked out of the window this morning everything was under water. Mind you, she's on holiday in Sri Lanka and she says she doesn't know what's going on back home.

The BHA website has it Good to Soft (Soft in places). And more is coming, according to forecast.

Simon Claisse: "We've had 17mm...good to soft with a bit of soft out there...a few more showers today...the outlook remains unsettled with plenty more rain to come...another 17mm in the lead-up to tuesday, and if correct a combination of good to soft and soft ground in the balance, but in the balance I'd not speculate at this stage."

I live down the road and we had quite a bit of rain this afternoon I wouldnt be at all surprised to see it start soft and no good in the description.

Thanks for the on-the-ground info. I expect the same too given rain forecast in the evenings of most days esp monday evening right through to Gold Cup day - no watering needed, I hasten to add. |

yes there's rain f/c between now & next week but people seem to be forgetting this place dries out like a wrung sponge

The forecast seems to be precipitating slower ground as the Festival progresses; the Blue Riband is the last of the championship race - music to the ears of Native River supporters perhaps.

all I can see in the f/c is intermittent periods of light rain or showers
the chance of rain %s for thurs & fri are low as well I cant see the ground being heavy or even close to being heavy tbh |

Don't forget the wind. It has been really blowing down here and stonger winds forecast on a couple of days. This will dry some of that rain up across the course...my point here is that, although it is and will be wet, a portion of the rain will simply dry up and not get into the ground.

I do not anticipate it will be as soft as when Native River won the Gold Cup, but it could be easier than good to soft even of opening day; the forecast of periodic intermittent rain could result in this. And, as the Festival progresses the softer will be the ground, I believe.

according to BBC,light rain showers tomorrow and every day of the festival,but some sun as well,not sure what that will do to the ground,i suspect good to soft pretty much all week.

Scottish news tonight giving a heads up to a very deep area of low pressure forming in the Atlantic and forecast to hit the UK on Tuesday. Potential to become a named storm apparently. Heavy rain and serve gales. The last thing we need !!!

If the latest BBC forecast is correct there is no way it will be good-to-soft. Decent band of rain due tonight, then mainly dry through Sunday/Monday but a very serious band of very heavy rain on Tuesday morning. Backing soft (7/4) and heavy (8/1) looks a licence to print money (famous last words
 )My only worry is that the Tuesday may be abandoned due to the high winds and rain making it unsafe with all the marquees - same thing happened on the Wednesday about a decade ago. |

If that forecast for Tuesday strikes for at least a two hour period between 6-1pm the ground will be at least soft. The numbers in the Arkle bar wouldn’t pass a health and safety check either
