that makes sense to me bud but it may be my pocket influencing me !
By:
Haha, probably influencing me as well mate.
It just seems logical to me. Mind you, to me the logical thing to do the other year was to run Felix Yonger in the Arkle and Champagne Fever in the JLT,but they went the other way!! |
By:
where he goes next will be interesting ! (multiple entries over all distances probably so now wiser )saying that he may go to the festival and throw up more confusion who knows !
By:
Yorkhill won the Neptune on merit; he beat Top Notch the following year in the JLT convincingly and cleverly. But in the Lexus (left-handed) he jumped fine at the beginning but then pulled himself to the front, and that was when the jumping-left propensity took hold, and was a spent force 3 fences out. The Lexus is over 3m, ie 2.25f shorter than the Gold Cup - the chance of him staying this distance with his now accustomed keenness and jumping-left is negligible.
Regards Vautour, connections had utmost premonition he would not stay the Gold Cup trip after having 1st run, led and chinned in the King George despite the fav Don Cossack falling at the last; his last minute reroute to the Ryanair robbed racegoers their final chance of seeing Vautour (RIP) in a competitive Cheltenham race. The 2018 Champion Hurdle is much of a muchness with the exception of Buveur D'air. And if Faugheen is absent - this scenario is more likely now post his Ryanair Hurdle engagement - a penalty kick/near walkover, in my opinion. But Yorkhill could liven up the race if he goes there as his hurdling is much more superior than his fencing, and the much shorter distance is also to his advantage too compare to the Gold Cup (GC); he is 90 (Exchange) for the GC if anyone is interested. |
By:
Yes,i agree Yorkhill would liven up the CH,well certainly the build up anyway.Same with the QM
Problem is the horse has been campaigned with staying further and is bred to stay further. Thats the point i am making here, the connections dont seem to be seeing him as a 2 miler. Of course that may change as time moves on,and they may see things as you and others do. Absolutely agree also that his run the other day does not say Gold Cup contender, but his JLT performance coupled with his breeding does imo. What i am trying to do here is 2nd guess what they are thinking, and as we all know, that aint easy!! On all evidence i currently have available to me,i think he will be in the Ryanair.....but i still think its possible they may have another go at 3m. Where he SHOULD be,well thats certainly open to debate. Re the Vautour example Just saying that they have no problem with running horses with lofty reputations in races with less prestige.he ran in the JLT and the Ryanair when an awful lot of people thought he should be in the Arkle and QM or Gold Cup. Its all about getting festival winners, and if that means they run a horse where we dont think it should......so be it. |
By:
If you think he's more likely Ryanair bound he's 4/1 (to win any race at Cheltenham) which is a generous price, I'd have thought. Also, after aborting the CH last year in the absence of Faugheen, and with the participation and well-being of Faugheen in doubt plus his dismal run in the Lexus I'd like to think the minds of connections would be more here (no Douvan/Min not good enough) bound or the CH; the Ryanair is a glorified Grade 1 race but carries little prestige and/or significance.
By:
Another thing was connections opted to pitch him against Sizing John in his 3m debut chase. And that spoke volume in my book.
By:
I123 - make your flipping mind up.
One post you are saying he should drop back to 2m for the Champion Hurdle or Champion Chase, but then you say that it 'spoke volumes' that connections ran him over 3m against Sizing John? |
By:
Yorkhill not being targeted at 2 mile races doesn't mean that they don't see him as a 2 miler, it just means that they think he is more flexible as opposed to the horses that they already have running in the CH and QM.
However that picture is now changing with Douvan out and Faugheen with a big question mark against him. I think it's highly likely that Mullins wouldn't let both those races pass by without the 2 stars mentioned above without Yorkhill deputizing. On balance I think Yorkhill will run in the QM as that's at least the discipline he's currently racing over and I think the way he raced the other day would have encouraged connections, he jumped better and looked to be enjoying himself, he was also given an easy time when his chance had gone. |

By:
Latest on Faugheen: did not eat up on friday night after the race.
" " Min : lit up in the 1st 4 f by the Gigginstown horse. Yorkhill: Champion Chase (CC) vs Champion Hurdle (CH). There is a slight question mark against Altior the short price fav here post the wind operation, and only Buveur D'air (BD) to beat in the Champion Hurdle (CH) ie fences against hurdles. Which of these disciplines has he a better chance of securing a well deserved prestigious win? He skipped CC and the CH on account of Douvan and Faugheen respectively in the last Festival. Now, the former is no longer a factor, and the latter has a huge question mark over well-being and more importantly his chance of winning ie Altior or BD? Remember what Mullins said at the outset of this season eg he'd revert to being a hurdler? To pitch him in the competitive Lexus against Sizing John on his 3m chase debut spoke volume ie last chance saloon of aspiration for the Gold Cup as time is against him; one season chasing or back to hurdling. Next season, a probability of Footpad competing in the CC - Mullins has no outstanding CH contender this season or next, I believe. Assuming the Ryanair Chase and Stayers Hurdle are races too insignificant or forward looking for Yorkhill to be competing in at the Festival the CH seems to be more likely for him, I think, at the present time. But this could change given the factors eg well-being of the horse/owner pecking at the stable nevertheless, only these two races are seriously under consideration, I believe; prices are 12 against 14 (here). |
By:
For someone who has stated on a few occasions he would never back a Mullins horse antepost again you are spending an inordinate amount of time trying to second guess where his horses may run and how you might be able to beat the market.
![]() |
By:
Yep, fair points lads, and I can certainly see the reasoning for Yorkhill to run over 2m at the festival.
May well depend on the reappearance of Altior and how he fares?. May also depend on how they see the challenge of beating BD in the CH?. Another thing to consider - The owners of UDS now have another contender for the Ryanair. How does that affect running plans? Doubt they would want both in the Ryanair. And I can see them wanting UDS in the QM. Maybe they would then look at UDS in the QM and Min in the Ryanair? Then if staying chasing and presuming they have given up on the 3m route,Yorkhill could then provide them with an extra chance in either the QM or Ryanair. |
By:
Ruby, if recovered from injury, will be key to all the decisions.
Certainly no point trying to second guess anything until after the Irish Champion hurdle / Irish Gold Cup meeting in early February. |
By:
Assuming all is well with Altior and he runs in the CC, Yorkhill will have the better chance of beating him than Min post Min's defeat in Ireland, and drubbing in the Supreme.
If Yorkhill (highly unlikely) runs in the Ryanair, Min will not but instead in the CC; if so, the price of Yorkhill will be nearer 2/1 (4/1 here to win any race at Cheltenham). But UDS will as I believe connections of UDS and their runners do not figure highly in the pecking order at Closutton. If UDS is aimed at the CC whilst Min and Yorkhill are not then the former is being used as the sacrificial lamb; UDS did not defend his Tingle Creek crown against sub-standard opponents last year on ideal condition and also ran in the Ryanair so logic dictates very unlikely this year as the competition is even greater. My prediction for Mullins' runners in order of preference/priorities are (CH): Yorkhill/Faugheen/Melon - 2 min; (CC) Yorkhill/Min/UDS - 1 if the former; (Ryanair): UDS/Min/Yorkhill - 2 max without Yorkhill/only Yorkhill. No Gold Cup or Stayers for Yorkhill, I firmly believe. |

By:
Yes Uncle, no doubt Ruby will have a big say.
Probably right mate that no point in trying to 2nd guess at this stage, but I do enjoy this kind of discussion. Never know I may get it right one day!! My only financial interest re all this is UDS in the QM at huge odds, which is obviously rather speculative, but at least he is one that they will surely consider for the race. Not sure he would be a sacfricial lamb in the QM,his 2m Grade 1 form is there for all to see. |
By:
Everyone knows but some forget that UDS is totally ground dependent and his display against an ageing SS in 2016 showed his limitations but it is fair to to say he would be very difficult to beat in either the CC or the Ryanair on very soft ground. I would not give up on Min yet in the CC though.
By:
Absolutely no doubt UDS goes through the soft ground better than a lot of horses, and that surface probably gives him his best chance of winning.
However,he has good winning form on decent ground and his run in last years Ryanair, which i thought was impressive, was on ground described as good. Going through his race record,he has winning form on all surfaces from good to heavy. To me the formbook tells us that he is a very consistent and genuine horse that goes on all surfaces, and better than most on soft. The fact that the owners now have two contenders for the Ryanair gives me hope that they will give UDS another crack at the QM. |
By:
Its an intriguing question as to which of the senior Mullins chasers will go for which races at the festival.
I can see the priority once again, but even more so this year,as being to just get them all there fit and well and decide the targets at the last minute. As mentioned above, Ruby's availability is central to everything - UDS, Min and especially Yorkhill would have their chances comprised considerably without him on board. I wouldn't completely rule out Douvan re-entering the fray...He's reported to be "fine" at the moment. If the intermittent lameness has gone and he remains sound for the next few weeks then I'd be surprised if they don't reconsider their options. Assuming Douvan is out then my guess is Yorkhill will run in either the QM or the GC, with my preference right now for the QM.If so then one of either Min or Great Field(anybody got any updates on him?) will join him there and one will join UDS for the Ryanair. UDS would need soft at best, more likely heavy, to come under consideration for the QM. He's a very good horse - tough, remarkably consistent and with a high cruising speed but he has only one pace, albeit a good one, and his inability to quicken is always going to count against him against the best over 2 miles on good ground as we have seen at Cheltenham, Sandown and Punchestown. Djakadam will definitely be back for the GC along with either Acapella Bourgeois or Total Recall. Yorkhill may run here depending on how he performs next month. |
By:
Yorkhill is shortest for this over his other possibilities, red herring?
By:
UDS would need soft at best, more likely heavy, to come under consideration for the QM
Have to admit, the consideration is my fear FTV. I do console myself though with the fact that UDS has two Grade 1 victories over 2m on ground better than soft,at Chelt and Sandown and his QM defeat to Sprinter Sacre on good ground, one of the best two milers we have ever seen, was no disgrace(ageing or not). So i have proof he can perform to a high standard on better than soft ground. I also console myself that this years QM has probably one potential superstar in Altior, but he still has it to prove for me and is coming back after a long lay off and setbacks. Its possible that the field for the QM this year may not contain a horse better than him, there certainly aint one with better 2m form than him. |
By:
mins connections saying he was lit "up " by the gigginstown horses in his last race in ireland ,well he can expect fireworks in the queen mother .
By:
The comment "lit-up" by connections reminded me of Carvills Hill. Similar tactic to sink Min I presume on race day then.
By:
With a better ride Min will be ok, can't imagine Ruby tearing off on him(or Townend making the same mistake twice).
UDS is a good horse on any ground, but he's no superstar. Sprinter Sacre didn't just beat him, he destroyed him twice, and yes there was no disgrace in that.Fox Norton beat him well in Punchestown. Despite UDS looking to be well in control for most of the race, Fox Norton quickened past him from the last. On soft or heavy I'd fancy UDS to beat FN but on a sound surface I'd take FN every time. UDS would be a decent each way shout in a QM due to his consistency but I would still expect a couple to beat him(including one of his stable mates). The Ryanair however is made for him. He can keep that gallop up for an extra half mile and draw the sting out of the others. I really cannot see him swerving the Ryanair unless the ground comes up soft or heavy and the QM cuts up. |
By:
Not too bothered re the end of season race with FN.Had it been earlier in the season i would be.
Never used end of season form when looking at the following festival. As far as his stable mates go, cannot have Min after struggling with Simply Ned,he has to improve a lot for me. Yorkhill is interesting and one would have to respect if connections chose him as their main hope in the QM,but at this stage we have no form at 2m chasing to go on to say hes a big QM runner. He could be though, i do realise that. Its fair after last year to say that the Ryanair is made for UDS,but one could say the same for Yorkhill after winning the JLT. Be interesting to see which way connections go........one thing for sure, none of us know!!.....yet. |
By:
Realistically, only two probable destinations for Yorkhill at the Festival ie Queen Mother (QM) and Champion Hurdle (CH) - both prestigious and only over 2m; prices 8 and 14 (here) respectively. The Stayers (S) is almost zero chance, similarly the Gold Cup post Lexus - both over 3m and he finished last in the latter!
If in the less prestigious Ryanair (R) he'd p*ss off the connections of UDS and (possibly) Min - he is 4/1, if so. However, if the CH not only would he relish the task, it is not fences, the distance would suit and also act as a cover for Faugheen should Faugheen be absent and/or unlikely to run his race - Faugheen could be pulled-up during the race which is a probability now rather than a possibility post the Ryanair Hurdle. QM - 2nd fav after Altior CH - 2nd/3rd fav after Buveur D'air and Faugheen R - short price fav S - no chance GC - no chance |
By:
Tell me Imp.....why do you think Yorkhill is so much better than UDS?
By:
UDS ought to have run in a CH two years ago when he possessed the requisite pace. He was not impressive when beating Sire de Grugy in the 2016 Tingle Creek; he won the Ryanair in 2017 but was beaten by UDS in Ireland - end-of-season engagement must not be used as an excuse; Sizing John had had a much tougher season yet got up to beat Djakadam in the same Irish Festival.
Yorkhill is still youthful but for Faugheen and Mullins' chicken mentality ie moto of winning a '****' race than finishing 2nd in a prestigious one, Yorkhill could have had a CH crown under his belt last season. Also, he ought to have been running in the Supreme but for Min the talking horse of Ricci, Closutton's number 1 patron. I firmly believe Yorkhill still possesses the pace for a 2m race on any discipline; he's shown 3m especially over fences is beyond him. I'd have Yorkhill before UDS any time any day over 2m/2.5m, period. |
By:
I must have infringed the platform's verbal police.
**** meant sh1tty. |
By:
Most sane racing people would put the Ryanair comfortably in among the top 10 steeplechases of the entire season between GB and Ireland. Any owner, trainer or jockey would sell their granny to win it.
If you really believe the Lexus was proof that Yorkhill doesn't stay 3 miles then you must also believe that Sizing John and Djakadam have lost their ability to stay 3 miles too. The Lexus told us nothing at all about Yorkhill's stamina because he didn't run his race, in common with many of his trainer's runners the same week. Dismissing his ability to stay 3 miles or further on the evidence of that one performance is just another example of the usual hysterical,basket-case over-reactions of Imp123. |
By:
So basically its all guesswork imp,gut feeling perhaps...fair enough you may be proven right,he is better than Yorkhill, but so far all form evidence points the other way....we shall see hopefully.
Re end of season form, its something i have always looked at that way,i just dont rely on it for the following seasosn festival,as is my right. I prefer eg to look at UDS when trained to peak at Chelt against SS getting beat 2 or 3 lenghts, than Sandown when getting stuffed out of sight. Whether i am right to have that strategy is another matter, but time and experience has told me to carry that on. As for whether UDS still possesses the speed for 2m Grade 1's on ground better than soft, well i dont know until he runs in one,i hope i get the chance to find out,but he certainly still does possess speed judging by his performance the last day. As for 2m5f,i personally think it is in no way clear which of the two would be best, they both won well over that sort of distance last March, and of course at his age its possible Yorkhill is catching, caught or overtaken UDS....but its also possible UDS is the better horse. My gut feeling on this one,is that if they both lined up in the Ryanair,i would back UDS on the strength that he imo is more reliable to run his race and has better form, but at the same time would be very aware of the potential for Yorkhill to put in a mighty performance if putting it all together on the day. So it would not be a big bet!!! |
By:
first sentence.......better than UDS.......sorry!!
By:
As I'm almost certain Yorkhill will not be pitched in the Ryanair I've backed him at 4/1 (nrnb) for the race 'cos if so, he'll be fav with a price no bigger than 2/1, I firmly believe. I've also backed him at 4/1 to win any race at the Festival eg 4/1 for the Champion Chase or the Champion Hurdle is also a fair price. Additionally, I've also backed him for the Champion Hurdle at 14 here more as a punt.

Have to agree with points made in the last two posts. Re FTV, completely agree that the Ryanair bashing does do my head in a bit - some of our recent Ryanairs have been up there with some of my favourite festival races. You tend to get good quality, proven G1, younger horses in it that use it as a stepping stone. However, just because imo, it's a stepping stone to many, that doesn't detract from it being a great race in it's own right.
Agree with Budd in that I would always back UDS over Yorkhill if they met (over any distance), although there is always that little voice inside your head knowing Yorkhill always has the potential to put in a superstar performance and you'd kick yourself if he went unbacked. However, on the balance of probabilities, you know where you stand with UDS and he'd have my money. However, I personally could not see UDS or Yorkhill winning a QMCC. For one, UDS's best ever performance (imo of course) was in last year's Ryanair, so I think that proves that 2.4m is his distance on good ground. Yes, he did beat all but Sprinter in his QMCC the year before, but let's not forget that was a Sprinter who was 18lbs lower this his peak going into that race, and UDS was an odds on favourite. Re Yorkhill, I do think he has the speed for 2m as I've said before, but not over fences. I think 2 mile chasing is a specialist division (more specialist than 2m hurdling imv) and I don't think Yorkhill would have that specialist skill. Others disagree with me about his fencing, but over 2m going flat out, he'd lose too much ground going left. You may get away with it in a Ryanair or Gold Cup, but not a QMCC. Re the Vautour comments above, if they had no problem putting him in the Ryanair then they'll certainly have no problem putting Yorkhill in. I know it's pointless comparing them, but I will anyway!....imo Vautour was in a completely different class to Yorkhill. |
By:
Mullins team was stronger when Vautour raced in the Ryanair.
Anyways, one of the guys on the final furlong Christmas review podcast reckons he texted Wylie regarding Yorkhill going forward and he replied that it's 2 miles next time. I realize this would be out of character for the stable to divulge stuff like this but that's what they said. As it was my first ever listen I also don't know if they are partial to wind ups either.........certainly hammered Townend for his ride on Min though. |
By:
Well they were certainly stronger for the Champion Hurdle Duffy.
With UDS and Djakadam they obviously thought they did not need Vautour in either of the other chases. To be fair they weren't far off, they both placed, and Vautour won. Would they do different in hindsight? Guess only they know that. Interesting if Yorkhill does go 2m next time.It maybe just what the horse has always wanted. Would be interested in peoples opinions of a horse going from 2 and a half to 3 to 2m in a relatively short space of time. Not sure its the right way to campaign a horse myself, especially 3m down to 2m!! but I guess when you have so many good horses, you have to try and fit them all in,and also of course to get as many winners as you can. Guess its bound to lead to some horses being tried at different distances, and some running at distances we don't agree with. |
By:
Yorkhill ran in the Neptune (20f) because Min the talking horse of Ricci ran in the Supreme (16f) otherwise the role would have been reversed if ownership was different; his last run in the Lexus was his one and only attempt at 3m to satisfy connections' aspiration of running him in the Gold Cup, but that backfired badly - the dream had ended.
There has been quite a few "squids" for him here (7 here) maybe there is a degree of truth in the text communication between his owner and a racing journo (apparently). Notwithstanding, there is demand for him in the Champion Hurdle too (20 here). If so, where does that put Min? Abort Cheltenham or run in the Ryanair as running in the Champion Hurdle would be a non-event in my book but connections may differ; Min is 21 (here) for the Ryanair, but no demand. |
By:
Budd, going from 2.5m to 3m in a short space is a big positive imo and something I look for when backing one over 3m.
People can argue that there is no form in the book at that distance, but often there is big improvement the first time they step up; Sizing John last year is an example, Solwhit over hurdles another. Obviously sometimes they don't stay, so it is a risk though. One thing I would say about Yorkhill is that I don't think the other day says he doesn't stay 3m. Not for me to question Mullins (although I am!) but he was really chucked in at the deep end. His first ever run out of novice company was in a Grade 1 chase over a distance he has never ran over (outside of ptp) and it was his first run in 9 months against race fit rivals. Looking at it now, did he ever stand a chance before the flag fell? Normally the first race out of novice company would be a pipe opener against similar opposition over a comfortable distance, and then ramp it up after that. I know there will people using the term 'armchair trainer', 'thinks he knows better than Mullins' etc, but it's how I see it. Going back from 3m to 2m (over hurdles or fences is rare) but I think at this stage of his career, and we are now a good way through the season, I'd draw stumps on the 3m ambition for now and then try again next year when he can have a proper prep (maybe in the John Durkan like SJ and Djak) and go from there? Personally think they should make a decision now and stick to it, rather than being undecided the week before. Annie Power shows to me that sometimes some horses that have ran over 3m can be brought back to 2m and win championship races, but maybe that's easier over hurdles? I'd be amazed if Min wasn't in the Champion Chase and UDS in the Ryanair. As they split them all up that only leaves Gold Cup or Champion Hurdle for Yorkhill imo. I'm still interested in Fox Norton for this and he'd be another 3m down to 2m. |
By:
Some interesting and Fair comments there Chief.
Yep, I too take note of a horse stepping up from 2 and half to 3m, especially one that looked like staying further in the JLT and bred to do so.....think you are bang on with your comments re Yorkhill. Its the drop from 3 to 2 that I am not so keen on, just how much does that confuse a horse? He will have to go a lot quicker than he has been allowed to do, although I grant he may prefer that. But if he does prefer that, is it wise to try and make a Gold Cup horse out of him? I dunno, I just do wonder how much this search for a GC winner,or the seeming obsession with having horses in every top race with a chance, actually suits the horses. Annie Power is a good example of a horse that went from 3 down to 2,but I would argue its also an example of a horse that should not have been going 3m anyway. She was imo far superior a horse to More of That, and proved to be a Champion Hurdler......possibly one of the best we have seen......could have won more imo. All this chopping and changing a horses distance and races to suit owners and trainers, yes they pay the bills, but I cannot help think that decisions don't always have in mind whats best for the horse. |
