Will he atone in the JLT or will he leave his heart behind at the racecourse? I hope the real Samcro turns up.
By:
The real Samcro? Is that the champion novice hurdler who was never really a hurdler at all, and neither was he ever a 2 miler, but who was actually born to be a staying chaser?

Very lucky win for me. He was my banker until pulverised by Faugheen at Limerick; his price post this was humongous.
Horse racing is a funny old game. This Cheltenham is beginning to look like what I like despite feeling non-plus about it in recent weeks. Even Champ snatched victory from the jaw of (near) certain defeat. |
By:
He retains all his ability and for today at least the problems that have plagued him were not present so he was able to show his true running, that is what happened.

Very pleased for the horse

Read what impossible says, absolute tosh. Dogs it in a battle. What did he win by ? A nose ? Clueless ejit, said he never backed him on one thread then says it was a very lucky win for him on this thread. Then someone else says this forum is sadly lacking. Hardly a surprise. Read the post of mine 26th dec, he was a davy russell ride then and gordon performed a fantastic training performance to iron out the wrinkles. Well done to the horse, if a few on here ignored the loons that crave their attention this forum would improve greatly.

There were a few of us who were Samcro fans and remained so.

....and we'll get it all over again through next Winter when he struggles to get the air in his lungs on bad ground, but just remember to get with him by this time next year in the Ryanair.

Will he go Gold Cup? Could be intriguing with ABP, Santini and Lostintranslation. Definitely no CDO and PP.
By:
Yeah wonder if that "non stayer" MONALEE , BTN 2 Lengths this year will be there impejit
By:
Real steel and monalee both ran crackers.
By:
We are blessed that impejit knows more than HDB ......fancy keep running a non stayer over three miles and finishing fourth in a gold cup beaten less than two lengths by the winner, earned over a quarter of a million now as a non-stayer of course
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
By:
Add to that keeping on strongly at the end of 3m2f
By:
Maybe Monalee is "staying" better with time, but I think PP was "weakening" when falling. But, the winner is pretty decent. Santini needs to sharpen up. An entry in the Workingham perhaps.
I hope Lostintranslation skips the Betfair instead focuses on the King George (the proximity of these two races could be responsible for it dismal performance last year). but, an excellent run since Dec 2019 yesterday. |

I don't think anyone can be blamed too much with being a tad confused re Monalee
Looking at his race record - His career thus far is littered with races varying from 2m2f up to 3m,with many at 2 and a half and 3m,and none at further than 3m until last week. He won a ptp over 3m,and a hurdle over 3m,and his 3 chase wins are over around 2 and a halfm. Last season he ran at xmas over 3m beaten comfortably by Kemboy, but still beat some useful stayers in the process, and then ran over 2 and a half next time out, followed by the Ryanair. Then went back up to 3m and was pulled up. This season he started off at 2m4f,stepped back up to 3m and ran a cracker at xmas just getting beat by Delta Work. Then they decided to go for the Gold Cup and hes ran another cracker. Ive sat on the fence a fair bit with him as regards staying 3m well, and I have to admit before the Gold Cup I did not think he could stay well enough to figure, with this opposition, but he did. Now im thinking the horse may have confused the trainer over the years?,which would explain the changes in distance as hes developed into what he clearly is now, a staying chaser. HDB is one of the shrewdest trainers out there imo,and one of the most genuine.....you only have to listen to every interview he does to know that. Hes worked the horse out now for sure. |

wokingham royal ascot santini ? hed have to start now and might get placed
By:
Santini is and out and out chaser like a greyhound; put anything infront and he'll chase and run like the clappers.
I think whether Monalee stays the Gold Cup trip the jury is still out given the mediocre pace at Cheltenham. Let's hope a fast pace at Punchestown will enlightent us more. But, he ran a good race. |
By:
Jury is still out !
You are so thick ........ |
By:
for what it's worth, I think Monallee stays.
Just gets beaten by better horses on the day, who overall are better than him at this stage. As for Samcro he's 2/4 over chases (pos 3/4 if not falling),still a player and class act, imv. |
By:
Hope he stays
Conversations have been had About the irish national Oooooopppppssss |

Don't worry too much about what trip Monalee needs, whether he runs over 2.4 up to 3 or whatever it is, in top class races he will run well without winning, that's just him isn't it.

Samcro needs a Dyson before racing - the gunge needs ridding of.

Gold Cup or budget airline? The owner has Delta Work too for the big one.
By:
Elliot: "Samcro is very hot and cold. When he's good he's good, when he's bad, he's very bad."
I think punters have cottoned on to that Mr Elliot. Thanks for the confirmation nevertheless! |
By:
I've forgotten, he's budget airline bound, if he makes Cheltenham.
By:
I think you will find that when he's bad he is in fact, horrid!
By:
But, he seems to like Cheltenham...winning both times.
By:
any chance samcro goes gold cup now delta w is out ?
By:
He'd be interesting, we can't take anything conclusive from his first failed attempt at 3 miles, as it could be put down to a typical winter bad ground run from him.
Before EA we did have Samcro didn't we who was supposed to conquer all on route to Gold Cup glory, that all got rather lost in the wash when he remained over hurdles and his subsequent mishaps. We saw last year though that at the festival on better ground what went before can be largely ignored, so on that basis and with the original plan for him still not really been busted....why not? |
By:
yes he is a very good horse when he is right as the marsh win shows .worth a pop at the gold cup !
By:
No mention of he going Gold Cup, only budget airline, if he makes Cheltenham. He's either hot or very cold, according to Elliot; bear this in mind before wagering.
He was an unexpected winner for me in the JLT beating Melon (I think), and Faugheen, the horse that trounced him in Ireland prior. |
By:
7/1 from 19/1 in the last few days. The better ground will certainly be in his favour too.
By:
The sulky git just was not interested. Maybe gone-off the game.

With the easy-to-back 11/4 favourite Samcro (blowing hard after) very disappointing in sixth, the John J. Galvin Steeplechase was won in good style by Darasso (11/2).
The front-running Abbey Magic jumped right throughout, and it was smart riding by Luke Dempsey on the winner to get up that one’s inner going to three out and ensure a clear run from that point. Darasso led before the next and went away to beat Snow Falcon (5/1) by seven lengths. A winner of Graded races over hurdles and fences in 2019 before struggling a bit when highly tried subsequently, Joseph O'Brien's French-bred 8-year-old was back to winning ways on his previous outing when taking a conditions hurdle at Killarney. "He is a good horse and did it nicely," said Dempsey. "I was eager enough to get ahead of (leader) Abbey Magic who was jumping right and the loose horse wasn't helping me either. "He was long at the last but came up for me and in fairness once he had hit the front he did it well in the end. It was a good performance." Quotes from Thomas Weekes |
