Nichols Canyon could be in this with Shaneshill's win today.

I may have imagined that but hasn't that already been confirmed as the target mate?

Interesting goings on tonight. 500 was asking to be backed at 3 faugheen tonight, it lasted about an hour, he's now 3.05 but buttons to back him all day today till that chunk appeared, maybe someone gambling but petite mouchoir matched at 2.3 in Irish champion hurdle admit for buttons but can only take what's there!

Something smells real bad, usually there wouldn't be any movement at all in these markets what with the unknown about Faugheen and the Irish Churdle decs tomorrow yet we have the complete opposite.

I'm very surprised to see Mullins fielding three especially Footpad...not uber confident about Faugheen perhaps. I have taken a chance with Petit Mouchoir on sunday - the race could be set-up for him.

Just had a little play at 12's Nichols Canyon NRNB.

If he runs a big race in the Irish Champion, I can see him running in the Champion Hurdle, his odds will shorten and they'll want to  split him and Shaneshill up.  If he runs a stinker in the Irish Champion, he'll go the Stayers and I'll get my money back.

Faugheen facing 'big ask' as he returns to action in Irish Champion Hurdle

Connections of Faugheen feel the long-absent champion faces a "big ask" to defend his crown in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Connections of Faugheen feel the long-absent champion faces a "big ask" to defend his crown in the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

The Willie Mullins-trained nine-year-old triumphed by 15 lengths in this Grade One contest 12 months ago, but was unable to bid for back-to-back victories in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham due to injury.

He makes his first appearance in 12 months this weekend and while he has upwards of a stone in hand on official ratings, the trainer's son and assistant Patrick Mullins is taking nothing for granted.

He said: "It's great to have him back and we've been happy with his work this week.

"It's a big ask for him on his first run back, taking on race-fit horses, but he needs to run.

"We've got him as fit as we can at home, but it is his first run for a year. It's all systems go."

Faugheen's price as favourite for the Champion Hurdle at Prestbury Park in March contracted earlier this week following the news his stable companion Annie Power will miss the Festival.

Jockey Ruby Walsh told Paddy Power: " Is there any extra pressure on Faugheen now? I'm pretty sure he doesn't know Annie Power is injured, but whatever he achieves will be on his own merits.

"All the opposition will have a race-fitness edge over him that's for sure, but Faugheen is top class.

"He's rated 176, but whether he can run to that rating first time out after 12 months out is hopefully what we'll find out."

Faugheen is one of three runners for the Closutton team as Mullins bids for a seventh successive Irish Champion Hurdle success.

Nichols Canyon inflicted a shock defeat on Faugheen in last season's Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown, but the tables were turned spectacularly here a year ago.

Nichols Canyon won the Morgiana for a second time in November, but proved no match for the Henry de Bromhead-trained Petit Mouchoir in the Ryanair Hurdle here last month.

The champion trainer also saddles Footpad.

"I think you can draw a line through Nichols Canyon's last run," said Mullins junior.

"He seems in good form at home and if he comes back to his best form he'd have a big chance.

"Footpad will have to step up on what he's shown so far, but he's a Grade One winner at the track and we're hoping he can pick up a share of the prize-money."

Petit Mouchoir, a former Mullins inmate, was hugely impressive over the festive period and jockey David Mullins hopes his fitness advantage gives him a real chance of toppling Faugheen.

"He was brilliant the last day in Leopardstown and if he turns up there in the same form again, he'll put up another good show," Mullins told At The Races.

"Faugheen has been off the track 12 months, so hopefully we might catch him out for a bit of fitness."

The five-strong field is completed by Joseph O'Brien's Triumph Hurdle winner of last season Ivanovich Gorbatov.

This on atr website now. Sounds to me like they really are worried over whether F retains his ability. Suppose we will soon find out in less than 48 hrs

Also and more worrying for Sceaux Royal backers is even after Alan King said last weeks on the line that he would be heading for the Kingwell and with Annie Power coming out of the market, he's been steadily drifting on here. Scared I'm worried that another might be about to be called out for the season.

If Faugheen is well beat on Sunday the whole ante post market (not just for CH) will take a massive shake up as plenty of horses will see the CH as a winnable race and begin switching targets. It's not unfeasible that Faugheen could run a good race, yet still go down to PM who is a good animal. That wouldn't be too dissimilar to when NC beat him first time out last season. I think Mullins would be willing to sacrifice Sunday's race if he was guaranteed CH victory in March.

seathestars i think the" drift "on scaux royal is being caused by yorkhills presence , just a shake up of the market ,most of the others have also drifted also .sundays events will cause further upheaval one way or another .

Very interesting just now to watch Ruby Walsh's body language when asked about Yorkhill ?going for the CH on ITV. Folded his arms, contracted into himself a bit.....!! "Does he have an entry?..... I suppose he could be supplemented..."

He doesn't have an entry......but you never know with that crew!

Let the madness begin!

Yorkhill in it would be a good result for me personally because I've got Beveur D'Air in several multiples for the JLT @ 14/1.  Just for the race though, I think it needs Yorkhill or Altior, because it would be a piss poor race without them.

Apples Jade dropping back in trip would be interesting too - four times the price of VVM for this despite beating her last time.

Annie to make miraculous recovery as per Binocular/Kicking King.....................??
By:
impossible123
When: 28 Jan 17 14:17
Faugheen damaged a suspensory ligament in the lead-up to the defence of his title at Cheltenham and this is an injury that could take a long time to be fully recovered. However, there is no guarantee the injury cannot recur if and when a horse is fully trained in readiness for a race, and I believe this could be what has happened to Faugheen again.

The $64k question is...will he be ready for Cheltenham in six weeks' time? Personally, after a year off and this (pulled muscle)  it has to be odds against.

With Annie Power out and now the participation of Faugheen in grave doubt the likelihood of Yorkhill being call up has significantly increased; if so, be prepared for Min to be diverted to the JLT.

In my opinion VVM is not good enough for this race nor the Stayers, but ideal for the Mares Hurdle.
By:

Why divert to the JLT when connections aren't scared of Altior.
By:

When: 28 Jan 17 15:03
In light of what has happened in recent days with AP and Faugheen, Mullins unprompted comments about reverting Yorkhill to the CH at some point in the future look highly suspicious. I think he knows that VVM isn't good enough and NC is no guarantee of success either and was simply laying the groundwork at the start of the week for what he knew was coming. The whole thing stinks.
By:

When: 28 Jan 17 15:27
VVM struggled to win over 2m at Donny just now - Champion Hurdle aspiration well and truly busted.

I'd not expect connections of Min would say otherwise. I firmly believe if encountering Altior in the Arkle the result will be no different to the 2016 Supreme one ie 1st Altior and 2nd Min.

I think over fences Min is a better horse than Yorkhill on evidence so far. And if Yorkhill is diverted to the Champion Hurdle, the JLT is fair game too given Buveur D'air has been neither convincing over fences nor a certainty to stay the JLT distance - he is also entered in the Champion Hurdle too. Thus it is Min for the taking.

Wonder if we may have a Istabraq scenario for Faugheen turns up  for the show jumps a few and gets pulled up no damage done, and plenty fill their boots.?

Though for those of you who subscribe to the PP/WPM/RW theory, pp are 6/4 yorkhill 20/1 min when he is getting done at 15s on bf for the jlt they are bigger price yorkhill than most by only a point in arkle for yorkhill though are kind of in the middle a little bit on the fence with Yorkhill in the C'hdl

I don't subscribe to the notion they are but interesting for those who do

Just out of interest anyone believe both stories that both Faugheen and Annie Power where fit as fiddles @ the start of the week yet both stable stars fall to injury in the same week.

I'm not quite sure the stories were as unnuanced as that but let's take them as 100 per cent true and reliable.

The paradox is that their work was probably stepped up several notches because they were going well, and this is what caused the injuries.

Hopefully we will hear a lot less of the tedious story of two horses who don't run and more on some that do.

I think Petit Mouchoir would have won today anyway , he sprinted away from Nichols Canyon like a superstar last time.

I believe he will be Champion Hurdle favourite after today and can't see what can beat him .

If Mullins, Ruby or Ricci spoke I'd be looking for what they did not say (rather than what they say); I'd only consider 40% of what said as truthful, at best.

Regards the absentee of Faugheen: Faugheen incurred a ligament suspensory injury which kept him off-track for over a year, and I believe this latest (injury) could related as a result of regular and intensive work and exercise prior to a race track appearance. But I hope I a wrong as I'd like to see him racing again before connections retire him (soon).

Ricci on Faugheen.........its a minor thing and we have run horses with worse last couple of weeks that have won,but you just cant take a chance!!
So you can take a chance with some but not Faugheen who has a less serious injury??

His boss, a Mr Bob Diamond, was told to clear off by the then Governor of The Bank of England in the banking crisis. How often has a CEO of a national bank given such an "invitation"?

PM did it from the front - not ideal for a hold-up horse. A very good performance, nonetheless.
