Ok as you all know i am sh!te at starting new threads but what are people's views on why Nichols is running this horse in this race tomorrow?

Surely if he was looking at say the Fred Winter he wouldn't be pitching him in against P&CConfused

I think he might have a squeak tomorrow. At 7-8/1 small stakes only, tomorrow is possibly a fact finding mission, given hes on 139 surely if he finishes too close to P&C the handicap is out of the question. It's certainly intrigued me.

Not sure STS seems a strange move by trainer, good chance could ruin his mark for the future.
Certainly wouldnt be backing it.
Report Satrus_Froot February 5, 2016 10:04 PM GMT
One that may have been overlooked I think. He ran with respect at Ascot fighting all the way up the run in and considering it was not only his first run of the season but his first run in the UK, thought he made a good impression. Made sure I scribbled him down as one to keep an eye on.

Not sure Nicholls is aiming him at a festival handicap, reckon it's a Triumph trial.
Report stevo1 February 5, 2016 10:15 PM GMT
Not sure slog in heavy ground against older horses would be way to go imo.
Report Can't Catch Me February 5, 2016 10:52 PM GMT
As per my post on the Triumph thread earlier, I think it suggests they think the horse is pretty decent. Certainly a Graded type rather than a Fred Winter type. I backed him at 33/1 after his debut run as he's double the price of Gibralfaro and there wasn't much between them, but you would expect this fella to come on a lot more for that run. Topped up today at 33's again.
Report nostaw_01 February 6, 2016 1:06 AM GMT
Backed this one for the triumph before his Ascot run based on the fact he beat Fixe Le Kap in France. Still the same odds now but wouldn't surprise me if he finished a good second to P&C tomorrow and shortened a bit. Bit of a strange placement for a juvenile but thought he looked very good on his debut
Report FOYLESWAR February 6, 2016 6:34 AM GMT
yeh read  somewhere before his debut they thought a lot of this one. a few winners in the week suggests the stable may be getting back into better form and this one can only improve Shirley!
Report FOYLESWAR February 6, 2016 7:11 AM GMT
going by what p.nicholls is saying on his timeform site on here he obviously thinks he has a bit of a squeak in this race ,gets a good weight allowance and with doubts about the rest may be worth a small  punt here and in the triumph at 33s ,fav gotta prove he is as good as last year and give the 4 yo plenty of weight . fav is too short imo  with what he has to prove ,may win but 1/2 .........
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 6, 2016 10:53 AM GMT
Good thread i was thinking the same thing.

Reading between the words of PN column i think this horse is triumph bound, if it was fred winter bound it would had been beaten at exeter by now.

I have also backed it for the triumph, hoping for a good run today.

Nice one :)

Took 33/1 Connetable coming up the home straight on Hills. Looks like being favourite now, was getting weight but chuffed with that.
Report willz February 6, 2016 1:24 PM GMT
Connetable and Footpads form from France ties in well after the 2 performances especially with Fixe Le Cap behind them in 4th. Looks great form now.
Report Can't Catch Me February 6, 2016 1:30 PM GMT
I think 10/1 is still fantastic value. Rayvin Black is a pretty solid yardstick and that form today looks top class in the context of a Triumph. And considering it was only his second run, you'd think he has plenty more improvement.

IG was as low as 5/2 after winning one race in Ireland against fellow four year olds. Go figure.
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 6, 2016 1:31 PM GMT
Agree, top yardstick and they are making out it was a false pace, it was all perfect for RB but he still couldnt win

Battled well but got plenty of weight and on heavy ground that is significant. Peace and Co. was awful.

Likely faster ground at Chelt.

Didn't look like a Triumph winner to me chaps.
Report JackieMoon33 February 6, 2016 3:09 PM GMT
Let's take money out of the equation and put things into perspective. Connetable was getting 10lbs from Rayvin Black (149) and Kayf Blanco (138). He beat them by a neck and three and a half lengths respectively working fairly hard to do so. Connetable is young and open to improvement but I'm not getting carried away with that form at all. If he'd done it on the bridle then fair enough but I'd say it was less impressive if you don't have any money involved and look at it literally.
Report Satrus_Froot February 6, 2016 3:21 PM GMT
No question he'd need to step up again to win a Triumph but he's came on from his first run which is all you could ask for really, but nothing in this division stands out. Ivanovich Gorbatov is a horse built totally on hype for starters and Gibralfaro looks of a similar standard to Connetable. None of the Juveniles looked very impressive at Cheltenham last weekend either so it's wide open.

Not really a race I like to get too involved in but potentially a good market to trade in.
Report buddeliea February 6, 2016 3:25 PM GMT
Well IG was impressive lto, probably did not help when he beat a well thought of Mullins horse. So got people buzzing.

He's still interesting on decent ground for me.
Report unclepuncle February 6, 2016 8:09 PM GMT
Great shout STS.

Joined in at 16/1 for the Triumph - really like his attitude and he should be well suited to the demands of the new course at Cheltenham.
Report stevo1 February 6, 2016 8:19 PM GMT

Going over it again i think people are underrating a run by a juvenile on its 2nd start in early February against a proven yardstick, often you get juveniles winning in ordinary novice races and people get excited.

Any other juveniles beaten a 149 rated horse this season in his own backyard ?
Report benkneale03 February 6, 2016 8:32 PM GMT
I got on at 33/1 coral as he jumped the last. People are knocking the form based on Blanco being so close but that is what happens in that ground, like the crabs who ended up quite close to barter's hill (and thistlecrack to an extent). They're switched off in behind and save enough for an effort that is short-lived. When it went side on 2 out I was expecting Blanco to come and win but the difference is the better horses can go again or sustain their finish and it flatters the ones in behind.

rather than say how close Blanco got there's more substance to argue how consistent RB his past few races when he's had the likes of TNO in trouble by running like that. There's nothing to say he hasn't ran to mark, if not higher so easily feasible to say C has ran better than his mark which you would expect anyway after coming on for debut this season. bare in mind that mid 140 was next best bar peace and co last season and it's looks a certainty that the race this year is a whole lot weaker with nothing showing the type of form P&C had this time last year.

I was really surprised by the 16s and 14s left afterwards.
Report Can't Catch Me February 6, 2016 8:43 PM GMT
Maybe I'm biased by my antepost vouchers but I'm a bit surprised the horse hasn't had more plaudits as well. And I can't believe he isn't favourite. Even taking the form literally and talking about what kind of mark he has run to, I think it's much more impressive that he's won and battled in that ground against battle hardened older horses on his second run here. Massive pluses for his chances in a Championship race at the Festival. Thought he was very athletic at his fences as well.
Report benkneale03 February 6, 2016 8:46 PM GMT
I also thought he had blown it at the last which hasn't been mentioned. Could have been worth a few more lbs when he's assessed.
Report Can't Catch Me February 6, 2016 9:03 PM GMT
It's quite unusual to see such disparity between the bookmakers as well isn't it. Still priced as low as 7/1 and as high as 14/1... Expected Corals to move in line a bit quicker than they have.
Report FOYLESWAR February 6, 2016 9:09 PM GMT
conetables French form stacks up well he was beaten a sh-neck and  1  and a 1/2 lengths  into 3rd by punch nantais and footpad giving the 2nd 5pound and footpad won   the grade 1   in Ireland today , connectable probably has more scope than footpad having had less racing ,the mere fact that nicholls pitched him in against higher rated more expierirnced rivals speaks volumes to me he would know what he has got on his hands better than any of us . and hard to say  to say peace and co has not  run to near his best as he didn't pull like last time and had every chance .  rayvin black loves sandown and  he also looks to  have run to somewhere close to  his best ,throw in the fact that connectable should progress then it was a very good performance ....imo of course .
Report buddeliea February 6, 2016 9:18 PM GMT
Think they are as confused as I am Catch!!
It's a very muddling market and not helped by the Irish form going t!ts up today, and a lot of the preps being run on sh!t going.
Strange goings on today.

If we get decent ground in the TRiumph it could all look so different.
Report Can't Catch Me February 6, 2016 9:22 PM GMT
Yes couldn't agree more mate. One of about 20 could win! Feel a bit sorry for those who have loaded up on IG at 3/1 and less.
Report buddeliea February 6, 2016 9:26 PM GMT
Well he could still win of course, and his performance last time is for me the most impressive, although I was really taken with Sceau Royal last time.
But yes,he's now a lot bigger than 3.
Report dan hardcore February 6, 2016 10:15 PM GMT
I cant see him as a 10/1 shot on todays form. I dont think he'd have been in the first 3 in the irish race today thats for sure! The only thing going for him i can think is that Nicholls said he would need it badly 2 weeks ago, so maybe he can improve plenty before march.
Report wellchief February 6, 2016 11:18 PM GMT
It was a good run, don't get me wrong, but I'm in the cautious camp at the minute.

Some have highlighted that they think he was pitched in today that Paul Nicholls sees him as a really good one.  I'd take the opposite view, where if he thought he was a really good one, why not wait until the Adonis, which is a proper Triumph prep, like he did with Zarkandar?

In his Betfair column, it sounded like it was more hope than expectation. "I gave him an entry in this as I sensed there would be only a handful of runners.....We might be flying too high but he is fresh and well so why not have a go as the other three all have questions to answer?"

Rayvin Black is a decent yardstick, and nothing to suggest he didn't run his race, but he did have a very hard race against TNO ina bog in Haydock two weeks ago, and it was his fourth run since mid/late December.

Not crabbing Connetable at all, and well done to those on him, but I think the likeliest Triumph winner was probably in Ireland today, or was in the Triumph trial last week.

I hope no one has forgotten Leoncavallo - he's being rested for the a race later this month after a fall before the Triumph at Cheltenham.

paul nicholls said conetable will go straight to the triumph ,some bookmakers had priced him up for the champion hurdle but nicholls ruled him out of that and said he will be in staying races next year ,he will be always workmanlike as he is not a flashy traveller , he belives he has the profile of a triumph winner on breeding and was bhoyed by the performance of footpad who finished in front of him receiving weight and fixe le kap who was 3 lengths back in 4th .from racing post .

Report ACStafford February 20, 2016 5:11 PM GMT
I wouldn't get too carried away. Rayvin Black seems much more at home in a slog like he got today. It probably wasn't quite soft enough for him at Sandown. And Kayf Blanco was giving Connetable 10lbs for a 4 length beating. It's looking a very tough race to figure out though, so he'd certainly have a chance.
