Momentum behind Black Hercules in recent days - has Patrick revealed anything? Also note that Pont Alex is pretty easy to back for this. I guess on the back of Willie mentioning races for him like Warwick and Leopardstown. Are these races he likes as RSA trials?

Any links to the Hobbs quotes on vienna being targeted for this?
By:
Does anyone know if Rule The World is being targeted at this? Would seem to make sense as he's probably not up to the RSA and owners have fav for that anyway.

By:
Yes i have had a tickle.Trainer says RTW is the best maiden chaser in the country and is going to try and win a lesser race,so should win his next race. Now is the time to get on.
By:
Yeah, I've seen the trainer say that as well. He's entered up on Sat in a 3M G2 so not sure id call that a nice easy race! Money has come from him on here as well lately.

I'm still strong on Shantou Flyer but undecided if I should throw a saver on Pont A. If he does well next time will he still be in for this race? With NMH and MOT in the RSA I hope Mullins/RR will see this as the easier option but if PA does really well maybe they'll change their mind and go for RSA making me waste money backing him for the National.. so maybe I should just wait and not throw any savers around yet..

Ben...after Onenightinvienna's win at Exeter in November, Hobbs said: "Staying is obviously his forte as that is what he's all about - he's a grinder and doesn't do anything very flashy. We'll look at another novice chase for him next and then take a view as he might not be quick enough for something like the RSA Chase at the festival, so the four-mile National Hunt Chase might be his aim come the spring."
By the time he ran at Cheltenham in December I had definitely read something somewhere to the effect that the four-miler was now his intended target but I can't for the life of me remember where. It was probably online, possibly on the Life website, but I can't turn it up. In any event, the way he ran at Cheltenham made it clear that he isn't up to winning the RSA so I think you can take it as read that he's going for the NH Chase. |

Is there any chance at all that OUTLANDER could run in this? Just have it in mind that Roi Des Francs could still be an RSA horse
By:
Cheers Augustine, I think that market is beginning to look more and more like going for something at a bigger price each way. Black Hercules ran well last week but i'm not convinced he's done much more than plenty at the head of the market. Would like to see blaklion or fletcher's flyer show the vienna form up a bit more if I was backing now but can't put anyone off.
By:
Roi Des Francs for me. He wouldn't have enough speed for the RSA and looks both a sound jumper and thorough stayer. Backed in the 'to win any race market' though - with O'Leary, anything is possible. They fecked up with Wounded Warrior last year and could easily make the same mistake again.
By:
The World Hurdle trial then only backs up my view that Black Hercules is a very good horse and wasn't at his best in the Albert Bartlett last year. He beat Alpha Des Obeaux fairly cosily last year over hurdles, giving him weight, and he is now a live chance in the World Hurdle.
I know that's comparing apples and pears but it can't do any harm to see the ones he's beat winning good races this year. |

Disappointing run from Rule The World there

I thought he ran alright CCM - in that ground
By:
Coming 5th beaten circa 10 lengths in ground far from ideal is fine surely?
By:
and not exactly knocked about...
By:
In fairness, just watched it back as I saw him going backwards coming to the last and didnt realised he had plugged on for fifth.
But thought he would relish the ground and would be staying on better than anything in the last couple of furlongs. |
By:
Onenightinvienna beaten at Kempton today and out to 14/1 in one place, 12s and 10s elsewhere. Obviously, disappointing that he didn't win but I thought it was actually quite encouraging as far as the four-miler is concerned as there's absolutely no doubt that he'll improve for that trip, not just stay it. Perhaps I'm clutching at straws but where there's life there's hope.
By:
I backed him in today's race and thought he should've taken on the winner down the back instead of waiting until the home straight.

agree augustine...thought it ran a cracking race as gee up for the 4 miler...14's well worth taking EW

Its the jockey who is going to be the biggest problem here, there are about 4 or 5 excellent amateurs in Ireland, the ones in England wouldnt ride Cheryl Cole. In the order of Codd, Carberry, O Connor, Mullins and Walsh, thats the way id rate them myself, but they are the top 5 no matter what way you put them in. If you dont have one of them and Onenightinvienna is extremely unlikely to, then you are at a huge disadvantage.
By:
One night in vienna aparrently skips cheltenham for the national
By:
Its easy now to see why O Brien is riding it , them kind of people dont deserve to have winners. What a ridiculous decision to go for the National

Watch the sea of blue on oddschecker when Codd's and O'Connor's rides are confirmed. |

Scooby, just saw that in Lydia Hislop's piece on the Life website. A bitter blow to my finances, I have to say. You'd have thought Hobbs might have mentioned the change of plan without having to be asked by a journalist but there you go - that's ante-post betting for you. I have to say it's a very bold move to go for the National as a novice but Onenightinvienna certainly jumps well and stamina is his strong suit.

I assume some other moron ran a novice chaser in the National at some stage but i couldnt think of any. This is absolutely imbecilic, what on earth is this about?. You put up inferior riders, and you go for the wrong races, and then they think they are unlucky when they dont win races.

So i am wrong here billy, is that what you are saying.
It sums up the quality of posters here where they harp on about a horse who i said wouldnt win, and it wouldnt have only for a horse falling. |
By:
Ref a novice chaser running in the National, I don't know whether you are right or wrong mate. And neither do you. But I do have an open mind and I do believe Philip Hobbs knows the game better than me and I do know Philip Hobbs knows the horse better than me and I do know a novice chaser won the Gold Cup last year and I do know Cue Card won the King George fair and square - none of that "if he didn't fall" bollox, jumping is the name of game - and I do know you present your opinion as fact and as smart as you may be that is just not the case. That's what I am saying. Make sense ?
And I apologise if the quality of my posts does not match your o so high level of insight and quick wit. |

ouch!!

By:
Firstly billy, i dont actually know how i qualified to be a mate of yours. Secondly i never mentioned Coneygree and the Gold Cup, that has absolutely zero to do with what i was talking about. I quite like Philip Hobbs as a person and as a trainer, but its highly likely this decision is not of his making. I'd like someone to tell me the last novice chaser that ran in the Grand National, never mind win it.
The one thing in their favour is that they are guaranteed a jockey , because there wont be a big que for Tom O Brien. |

If it's true it is a disgraceful decision, horses life is at risk here.
By:
Its not that his life is at risk as such, he is a very good jumper in all honesty. Its more like a disgraceful bit of placing , than anything else.
By:
His chasing career consists of 3 chases in small fields that makes him an accident waiting to happen for me.
By:
Mincer, Cause of Causes ran as a novice in The National last year, and Pipe ran a few.
By:
Fab Cause of Causes defo wasnt a novice mate, dont give him more ammo.
By:
Yes but C of C was a novice in name only, it was his 12th chase start and had run in many big field quality chases including a win and place at the festival.
By:
Correct Duffy not sure why getting involved tbh,but imo no novice should run in Grand National.
