This strikes me as a bad decision, as a festival goer for many years I know that by time the last race finishes when it was 5.15 and your leaving the track it's starting to get dark, pushing the last out to 5.30, if there's any problems at start, loose horse etc, or even a problem with the previous race, you may not be able to run the race for lack of light at end of day, surely if they want an extra 15 mins start the 1st race of festival at 1.15, But then they know the punters are in well before the 1st so why not try keep them that bit longer at the end to make more money over the bar. I guarantee at some point over next couple seasons this 5.30 for the last will come back bite them in the arse!!
No, it will OK regarding the light. If you go back 20 years first race used to be about 2.15 and the last 5.50 when they ran the 7th race. Not all days had 7 races though.

Shockster is right. When Pizarro leant all over The Cowboy, that race was off at 5-40 and I could see from the back of the stand that it was literally 'daylight' robbery.

Fair enough guys, I was just thinking that at 5.15 last race by the time polish off my pint and walk out its getting dark, if there's Been 5.50 races in past it shouldn't be a problem. Still over 4 months away, but we'll start to see some of the contenders for the festival in coming weeks, the build up begins, and thankfully a flat season with few highlights comes to an end!

In 1987, the year The Thinker won the Gold Cup, it had snowed earlier in the day and racing had been suspended for a period.
The last race that year was the Cathcart won by Half Free; I think it went off after 6 o'clock.
Dark as eff it was.
