Mullins beasts are often in and out over Xmas/New Year. Whilst obviously disappointing he got beat, he shaped like a high class animal everywhere bar the last 150 yards. Cherry ripe at Cheltenham I'd anticipate a huge improvement.

Seems he's confirmed Douvan for the same route as Vautour last season in Racing Post.

"We won the Punchestown Race race with Vautour a year ago before we went on to win 3 grade 1s, including the Supreme Novices, abd we're going the same route with Douvan. Hopefully, we might get the same results"

Hopefully that keeps Shaneshill on track for the Neptune.  I'm gutted I missed the 17.0 on here after Tell Us More's defeat.

Mullins basically said he won't go back in Trip in his RP column. His run was good and maybe he and Free Expression slit eachothers throat a bit and Mckinley who had improved at home got them

Agreed, beaten 3/4L in Grade 1 on 2nd start, and only 3rd start of career.  Could well leap forward again on next start.

He went up 15pts on RPR for the run, an improvement of over a stone.

Mullins said if they didn't run McKinley people would say it was a good race, fav makes all and beats 2nd fav with good yardstick back in 3rd.

I'm glad they intend to keep him at 2.5m.

Everyone sounded abit panicy after the race, especially with the idea of dropping him in trip, which was a knee jerk reaction imo.

Now that the dust is settled, I think it is the right decision, as I think he'd get done for toe in the Supreme.

I thought Mullins merely said that they wouldn't be dropping him in trip? Thus meaning that they might up him, he has come right in in the potato race market, 17s from 70s, for those of us only on him for the neptune its still worrying Scared

Mullins basically said he won't go back in Trip in his RP column.

Don't mean he wont go up just that he wont be going back to 2 miles.

But actually forget that, just looked at the graph i really should look at them before postingBlush, only £4 been done at silly prices and a mate just posted it was him but still could happen. Agreed they have no more heroes but you can never be certain till their going to post with this yard!

No way he goes up to 3 miles at Cheltenham, they have the fav for the race in No More Heroes.

so hes going back in trip but no now hes staying at 2 and a half...mullins all over the shop with this one.

dont think TUM and FE cut each others throats at all personally

He's done this before, he get's a bit too defensive when horses he holds in very high regard get beaten. So he instintively decided that TUM was that much better than McKinley that he could only be beaten by not staying etc..

I wouldn't put too much stock in post race comments from trainers on back of surprise defeats. When they say targets on back of wins it's fine as everything has gone to plan.

Wellchief posted a link to the Simonsig thread the other day, and it's like déjà by with this one when he was beaten by Peddlers Cross in the lead up to The Festival! Just shows that any top class animal can be beaten and still fulfil expectations.

he was beaten by fingal bay and was 20l clear of the rest, with hobbs saying fingal bay was potentially the best horse he'd ever had.

I thinks its more around the being written off after one defeat, after being upped in class.

There were a lot of calls to change Simonsigs trip, how could be possibly beat Fingal next time, when ultimately they are all trained for the day at Cheltenham, not a prep run.

Of course they all want to win their prep runs, especially G1's, I think they've got the bigger picture in mind.

I'd judge Tell Us More after the Neptune. This is why I don't really bet on normal weekends because some are further ahead than others, some are there just to get experience etc.

It doesn't really matter what Willie says in his column to be honest. We MIGHT find out which race he's goimg for the weekend before the festival

Remember he's a 12/1 shot for the Neptune, it's not like he's 9/4 fav like Un De Sceaux is for the Arkle.

Also, Shaneshill is my Neptune pick, so I'd like to think I'm impartial on this thread.

One other thing I'd like to mention re comparison with Simonsig is that I think it was the ground that did him that day against Fingal, he jumped and travelled all over him.

It could possibly be the same with Tell us More. He jumped and travelled the best imo and got tired in the ground.

Yes, he's won on heavy but against much inferior opposition, so the ground wouldn't have been an issue that day. In weak maidens a good horse should win no matter what the ground is.

Its like when a horse is upped in trip and we get the "he won a ptp so he'll get the distance". Most G1 horses will get 3m in a point to point because of the class of the opposition. Compeltey different to getting 3m in a top class hurdle or chase.

Just a thought but if this was a race early in the season, to the eye, TUM just seems to blow up.  Traveling great 3 out, quickened a few lengths clear then went to treading water between the last 2.  I just wonder whether Mullins went too easy on him, thinking he was something very special.  We will see but I just think that wasn't him at his best and if that is the case, they will run him again over the trip before Chelt to find out one way or another.

Fletcher, 8 length winner of the 1.20 Leopardstown today was 20 lengths behind Tell Us More in their bumper and 10 lengths behind Windsor Park on their hurdles debut ... all hope is not gone just yet!

just catching up with some nick mordin reports on the irishfield

i won't copy the whole as it's paid content (although you can look at 10 free reports per month if you create a free account)

he was very complimentary of the race at naas, it was a proper grade 1 standard

says it was a strong pace throughout and he was impressed with tell us more's accurate hurdling

horses from that race are worth following at the festival, and all of the first 3 home are good enough to win a grade 1 novice hurdle at cheltenham on his ratings

also mckinley has an exceptional record of 5 wins from 5 on testing tracks with undulations and big gradients but has been poor on flat tracks

Looking forward to seeing how TUM responds from his first off the bridle run LTO.  If he comes on for it, to win Grade 1 Deliotte Hurdle, then he could start fav for Neptune.

Not sure what Outlander's performance does for Tell Us More chances or target at Cheltenham? Mullins just said he's thinking of the Neptune which might mean Tell Us More goes for the Supreme.

I'm pretty sure it's bad news for my Neptune bet. Think he'll end up in Supreme now. Giggenstown have nothing for the Supreme bar him.

Douvan, Alvisio Ville, Nichols Canyon - Supreme
Tell Us More, Outlander, Shaneshill - Neptune

I hope but that leaves Cooper with nothing in the Supreme. Unless Identity Thief goes there, but he made his debut over 2m4f. We shall see in the Deloitte.

Who knows where TUM will end up but all we know for certain after today is all 4 (if we include the triumph) novice hurdles at this years festival don't have no potential future superstar and they are all relatively wide open affairs and are likely to all have max fields!

Few of my antepost novice bets don't look very good no more after today Cry

De Bromhead on Identity Thief after his win at xmas.

"I'm delighted. He jumped well. Bryan thought maybe a faster pace would suit him and we might drop him back and try the Deloitte here in February. We'll see how he goes after that. He was impressive in his bumper and kept the dream alive here today. He's a really nice young horse to have. The ground was pretty nice when he won his bumper and I'd say he pretty adaptable. Bryan said he didn't really want him winging the second last and getting there too soon so when he fluffed it he got a nice lead into the straight."

Seems like he might be the one for Supreme then.

Neptune or Supreme for Outlander
“Paul rode him like a good horse today. The Neptune would be the immediate thought but knowing as I do what it takes to win a Supreme I wouldn’t strike him out of that" - Willie Mullins on Outlander

That's Tell us More and No More Heroes both beaten by a Giggi second string in a couple of weeks.

Outlander's last run was 3m, so I'd be surprised if they brought him back down to 2m

Took £10 @ 85.0 for Identity Thief in Supreme. He's a class horse and hopefully he goes down that route.

wellchief - Faugheen ran in the same race as Outlander did last season over 3 miles. He was then brought back to 2 miles. Willie will put them wherever he thinks is best. Giggenstown have the say anyway where tier horses run.
