It must be 10/1 Our Connor with Coral. Not much value left in that race imo.

Un Du Sceaux or Melodic Rendezvous maybe?
Report brandyontherocks • January 6, 2014 9:51 AM GMT
Has there been any news regarding Melodic recently? Is he still heading towards the Champion Hurdle.

I am not sure Un De sceaux will head to Cheltenham myself. Hasn't had a campaign thus far that
Suggests he will be going.
Ruby quoted he will be champion hurdle horse one day.
Report sj • January 6, 2014 10:43 AM GMT
I think he'll tip Un De Sceaux
Report duffy • January 6, 2014 12:25 PM GMT
I'd be amazed if it was MR.
Report FOYLESWAR • January 6, 2014 12:44 PM GMT
I think pricewise may well put up  our connor which is why I have had to go in earlier than I had liked , didn't really fancy this horse that much I was probably swayed by the 5yo stats ,but after watching his runs last season especially the triumph cakewalk ,I was just waiting to see him run this season to see if he was up to cutting it with his elders ,his run in the Ryanair hurdle where he was a little weak in the betting and receiving 3 lb from h.fly and jeski was a cracking effort he jumped well travelled well and was arguably going the best on the run to the last where it looked as though he blew up and he should improve a good deal for the run .
it was reported that he had a minor setback before the morgiana and missed the race so all in all it was a very good effort imo . at around 10s he looks the value left in the race to me and I expect tom segal to put him up tomorrow .
Report robbo69 • January 6, 2014 1:03 PM GMT
Lets hope his arm of followers get a run for their money this year...
Dont think any of last years 4 selections even ran in the championship you can also add Tidal Bay in the national to that list.
Report ACStafford • January 6, 2014 1:56 PM GMT
I reckon he'll tip Jezki. He was keen on him for the Ryanair Hurdle and he didn't disgrace himself. He might have got to within a length of the Fly if he hadn't been boxed in.
Report duffy • January 6, 2014 1:59 PM GMT
Slightly off subject but dealing with jezki, people are concentrating on jezki getting boxed in but aren't spending enough time realizing that his inability to quicken at that crucial point caused his problems, the room was there for him to get away before OC got there but the change of gear wasn't there.
Report ACStafford • January 6, 2014 2:33 PM GMT
I agree Duffy. Jeki will probably be outpaced at the festival. I was far more taken by Our Conor at Leopardstown than by Jezki, but I'm just trying to get into Segal's head.
Report FOYLESWAR • January 6, 2014 2:38 PM GMT
same here duffy I had backed jeski for the churdle but after the run in the ryanaire I traded out ,think he will find the pace of a few of these too hot !
Report FOYLESWAR • January 6, 2014 2:42 PM GMT
unless the rp want a spectacular headline i.e "pricewise picks 50/1 shot  " then the only one I can see him going with is un deux scauex ,unexposed ,improving but an unknown quantity ,big question will ruby get off the fly for this one ,don't hold your breath
Report FOYLESWAR • January 6, 2014 2:43 PM GMT
only other one ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Report duffy • January 6, 2014 2:48 PM GMT
I too think OC may well be his choice, because you can find plenty to be optimistic about from his last run, he travelled well and "looked" to blow up a bit,if you subscribe to that then it's fair to assume that he'll come on for the run, the irish CH will be a crucial race

Segal will be sorely tempted to therefore go with a horse that is a double figure price now but could possibly be on a par with the other favs. should the next race go well, and even if he doesn't win next time he could still further enhance his rep should he progress again, which would keep the PW selection valid.

He's not my selection as I'm committed to tent now but I think 10's is fair value as before his last race I was very much in the "beat nothing in the triumph" camp, the comeback flat run didn't do much to discount that, but the other day he showed he was far from out of place mixing it with the best 2 milers and with improvement/fitness to come anyone fancying him should be more than hopeful......I'm talking myself into a bet.Grin
Report Ramruma • January 6, 2014 2:52 PM GMT
Un De Sceaux is also trained by Willie Mullins, who Sir Tom tends to follow.
Report Ramruma • January 6, 2014 2:57 PM GMT
Annie Power, perhaps? Unlikely to take on (and likely beat) Quevega, and not certain to get the World Hurdle trip, so may well run in the Champion. 14/1 in places.
Report duffy • January 6, 2014 3:00 PM GMT
AP supporters will want to be hovering over the back button in-running in the irish CH should HF be running below parGrin
Report ACStafford • January 6, 2014 3:02 PM GMT
I'm in the same position as you Duffy. I fancy the Tent, but if Our Conor is of interest. Tent seems to have drifted on here over the last few days, out to nearly 5/1. I've put a few quid on, but I'm trying to wait until the day, as I can't see him being much shorter then.
Report GI MAC • January 6, 2014 7:09 PM GMT

VC won't give me free bets any more, which is a shame as its a good offer. If he's tipped UDS, surely it has to be NRFB? Has anything been mentioned by connections about the likelihood of him running?

Sometiems they use it as an excuse to chop a few down in price. Not a fan of pricewise, who are really an enemy of the small punter who bet in bits and bobs when we have the money.
Report tomdeane • January 6, 2014 9:13 PM GMT
duffy, I agree completely with your interpretation of Our Conor's chances. Like you I was dead against him before the Ryanair, but I thought he ran very well and there is every chance that 10-1 underestimates his chance with improvement very likely (and at a track we know suits him but might not be right up the Fly's street).
Report kavvie • January 6, 2014 9:18 PM GMT
tom i have our conor backed.i was chatting to a person whos opinion id value highly.he said one of the things people are forgetting is that the champion hurdle is on a diff course than the triumph.its tighter and may no suit our conor as much as the triumph course which is the outer circut..then gain it might be better for him!
Report Tory • January 6, 2014 9:35 PM GMT
If you read the article tomorrow or tonight then you'll see where he's coming from putting her up. He can't put up the top three due to price and his aim is to put up something which could be shorter on the day.

He doesn't think Jezki can win, nor does he think OC will beat Fly next time out, meaning he won't be much shorter on the day than he is now. Therefore he's put up AP as a horse, which if if runs, could give the top 3 a scare and would be shorter come the day if it runs
Report jasey • January 6, 2014 9:46 PM GMT
He knows it won't run,he could have had some balls and put Ptit Zig up.
What next Simonsig for the QM
Report HaylingBilly • January 6, 2014 9:53 PM GMT
There are plenty of people think AP will run in the Champion Hurdle. He is not alone. I think this is a smart selection given the limited options he has for "value". If he was asked for the winner the answer would be different.
Report jasey • January 6, 2014 10:23 PM GMT
Its a stupid selection.
AP will run in mares race or world hurdle.
I would rather back AP  to win a future gold cup than follow pricewise
Report Slabster • January 6, 2014 10:29 PM GMT
I wouldn't be certain where she'll end up, but in every interview I've seen of Rich Ricci he's indicated the Champion Hurdle as his preference.
Report Slabster • January 6, 2014 10:30 PM GMT
If Quevega runs in the mares' race then there's no chance Annie runs there as well imo.
Report jasey • January 6, 2014 10:37 PM GMT
Thats the only way AP runs in mares aint it.
1/2 she runs in World
Report brandyontherocks • January 7, 2014 7:20 AM GMT
Jasey what would you select if you was in Segal's position?
Report Ramruma • January 7, 2014 8:37 AM GMT
Mullins & Ruby have Quevega for the Mares and Hurricane Fly for the Champion.

But before concluding this means Annie Power runs in the World Hurdle, we must remember that the Riccis also own Zaidpour, who has just won the Christmas Hurdle over 3 miles, after flopping in the Hatton Grace.
Report tomdeane • January 7, 2014 12:00 PM GMT
Good point Kavvie, and not one that should be overlooked. My gut feeling is that the old course would suit Our Conor even better as we know the undulations are no issue and he is a very strong traveller, but that is guesswork at present.
Report willie the milk • January 7, 2014 12:18 PM GMT
Has Ricci ever had a festival winner?
If not, then he must surely put AP in the Mares race. I'm confident she would beat Quevega as Q is always a far superior mare at Punchestown
Report buddeliea • January 7, 2014 12:27 PM GMT
you serious?
CH Fever last year?? not that long ago!!
Report Ramruma • January 7, 2014 12:48 PM GMT
@willie the milk -- Agree Annie Power could beat Quevega but I doubt they'd want to get in the way of Quevega's record for the sake of a Mickey Mouse race.

Riccis own Champagne Fever who won the Supreme Novices last year and who this year definitely maybe goes for the Arkle unless (now he has been beaten at 2 miles) he goes for the Jewson. And last year he was a late switcher to the Supreme from the Neptune.

So it is the same problem -- we don't know where the big owners and trainers will run their horses because one unexpected defeat or victory means they shuffle the pack again.
Report Slabster • January 7, 2014 1:21 PM GMT
Ricci has had three Festival wins: Mikael D'Haguenet (Ballymore) and Champagne Fever (Bumper & Supreme).

Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 • January 8, 2014 12:52 PM GMT
As a friend has just reminded me on, Annie Powers owner has Zaidpour for the World Hdl, so, in hindsight, AP might actually not be such a bad tip after all! The only thing though is, who would ride her?
Report buddeliea • January 8, 2014 12:59 PM GMT
WH - Walsh
CH - Townend I guess.
Report buddeliea • January 8, 2014 1:00 PM GMT
Unless UDS runs as well in the CH, then god knows!!
Report ACStafford • January 8, 2014 1:31 PM GMT
Zaidpour won't be winning the World Hurdle, so I don't think his participation should have any bearing on which race Annie Power runs in.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 • January 8, 2014 3:05 PM GMT
Perhaps AC, but you have to put yourself into the brain of a racehorse owner. I like to sometimes think that they see it rather differently, as in we see it as a no hoper, they see it as a, well anything can and invariably does happen in a horse race hes in there to take his chance we might score 6th place prize money or better sort of thing
Report ACStafford • January 8, 2014 3:30 PM GMT
I suppose you have a point STS. If I had two horses to run over different races at the festival, I'd probably want to see them in different races. The reason I think Annie Power should be running in the World Hurdle though is because it looks a far weaker race than the Champion. I reckon Mullins will be able to convince the Ricci's that it is the right race to run in.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 • January 8, 2014 4:01 PM GMT
Then again AC it was ricci that convinced mullins to let CF take his chance in the Arkle, which he invariably won. I aint backer her for anything, but, hope she turns up in the right race for you! Hate reading peoples losing to running in wrong races, even worse when its yourself, last one i did was Simonsig - Supreme when he went in the Neptune!
