See Skybet are the new sponsors of the race.Probably worth keeping an eye on their prices etc as the season progresses, they may well throw in a decent offer or two

Pond House seem to have a strong team of novice hurdlers and it looks like Red Sherlock for Neptune and King's Palace for Albert Bartlett, which leaves The Liquidator for Supreme surely?

He looks overpriced to me now because his run in the Tolworth was surely too bad to be true - stable form was n't great at the time, in fact I'm not convinced stable form has been great all season to date.

Thanks BJG,

So the sponsors have First Mohican (yet to jump a hurdle in public 6 weeks shy of the Festival) 5 points shorter in the betting than The Liquidator (4th in Champion Bumper and with a CD win in conditions that might not be dissimilar to those which which the Supreme will be run in).

Answers on a postcard, please...

Connections say something mate??
Report alleged22 February 1, 2014 10:31 AM GMT
connections said prior to the tolworth that Kempton would not suit, if he had not run at Kempton he would still be a 10-1 shot. when he won over the supreme distance he beat the 150 rated sea lord easily, lac fontana who was the first beaten has since come out and won, I would sooner take that form than the Kempton form where his trainer clearly stated numerous times that the course would not suit, also when I look at the leading principles for the supreme, I do not see a lot of course or festival form, whereas the liquidator has both, I think 25-1 is way toooo big and I am happy to keep topping up Excited

Not really that many options left for him if they want to run in good races for decent prize money.
Could take in the Dovecote at Kempton on 22nd, would still give them a bit of time before the Supreme but that's assuming that the ground improves a bit in the next two weeks.

Been trying to focus on this race tonight, as I've done most of my betting in the G1 races now.

Backed Vautour (pretty unoriginal) straight after his TTT victory, so happy with my price on him, but two I'm looking at now are Western Boy and The Liquidator (I see a few above like him).

Western Boy only beaten 3/4 of a length by Vautour last time out, when he was 7's and Vautour was 1/4, so shows what a good performance it was.  This is after he has only won a maiden hurdle, so to be pitched into a decent looking Grade 2 against Vautour on your second start over hurdles, tells me that he might be a good one, and I think represents some value at 16's, compared to Vautour at 11/4.

The Liquidator will probably divide opinions.  I'm not 100% sold on him yet, and I can't remember too many Supreme winners with a 5 next to their name, but he is a good ground horse and all the noises before Kempton was that it wouldn't suit.  As alleged has said, if he sat in his box without the Tolworth, he'd be 10/1 now.  This is exactly what has happened with Irving; track and ground din't suit in the Tolworth, hasn't run since and is 8/1 still.

It is hard to judge the strength of last year's bumper because normally only two or three max come out of them much better, and the order they finish in the bumper does not dictate the long term pecking order.

If you look at recent years bumpers, only a very small number from each race become household names, so it is very difficult to rate last year's at the moment imo because the vast majority of bumper runner disappear.

2009: Dunguib and Rite of Passage
2010: Cue Card and Al Ferof
2011: Cinders And Ashes and Felix Yonger
2012: Champagne Fever, The New One and Jezki
2013: Maybe Briar Hill and The Liquidator as the two???
Report ReaseHeath February 20, 2014 5:59 PM GMT
Hmmm...

I have an ew interest in The Liquidator at 25/1 - just took the view that the Tolworth form was wrong - 'wrong' Henderson horse won, winner well beaten in the same race last year, desperate ground etc. - I'd actually have been more discouraged if he'd been beaten a couple of lengths but he was done with three out! Not sure his performance was attributable to ground or track, just think there was something wrong with him (no proof of that) - the other alternative is that he's not very good Confused

It's difficult to get a handle on his CD win in November because only Lac Fontana has run since (won comfortably) - but I don't think he ran his race in November. Generally, that race is not a great pointer to the Supreme either. Also, though the trainer states he'll run in the Supreme, he's also got an entry in the County Hurdle which seems to suggest they're not sure he's up to the top level. So my confidence in the bet is slowly dissipating as D day approaches.

Garde La Victoire also ran poorly in the Tolworth (imo -and may well have been down to the ground in his case)  and holds entries in both the Supreme and the County Hurdle. He was entered at Warwick tomorrow but it looks like Hobbs might let him take his chance in the Dovecote on Saturday, may well be using the race to find out which Cheltenham entry he takes up.

So, if I had n't already backed The Liquidator I might be inclined to wait to see how Garde La Victoire gets on if he runs on Saturday. If he goes well, I'd be even more confident that the Tolworth form is nonsense.

Of course, it's also possible that Royal Boy has improved beyond all recognition from last season but personally I can't have that!
Report ReaseHeath February 20, 2014 6:02 PM GMT
actually describing the ground for Tolworth as desperate is an exaggeration but I still don't think it suited Garde La Victoire.
Report ReaseHeath February 20, 2014 6:52 PM GMT
another random thought...reading the Mullins piece today, they seem pretty sweet on Valseur Lido as well as the other two higher profile contenders.
Report alleged22 February 20, 2014 6:58 PM GMT
I think vautor is the worthy fav, I also like the look of Wicklow brave, but the liquidator is still trading at 25,s and is still the value in the race imo
Report wellchief February 20, 2014 7:06 PM GMT
I still think Western Boy is the value to be honest.  His form couldn't have been boosted any better than Vautour winning a Grade 1, and is almost five times the price for 3/4 length defeat.  He did come second to Wicklow Brave in a bumper, buts that's comparing apples and pears.

Vautour and WB were having their second ever run over hurdles in a G2, so that tells me both are above average.  With Western Boy you can give the old "if he was trained by Mullins his price would be...." quote, but pretty much every single non Mullins Irish horse gets that Laugh

The more I think, I won't go in on the Liquidator, so I'm only on Vautour and Western Boy, so I'm hoping the form of their race works out well Happy

Impressive run yesterday no doubt from Irving but Vautour was just pushed out to beat a 2 times grade 1 winner. Think the odds are not quite right at the moment.

not saying Irving can't win though.

Forty
Report wellchief February 23, 2014 10:23 AM GMT
Yeah that was impressive Budd, but he won like he was entitled to. I thought his jumping was very sticky early on though, which should improve for a faster pace.

I do think though that running 17 days before hand is less than ideal though. I've also learnt not to get carried away with performances similar to that before the Supreme, like i did with Cue Card, Darlan and MTOY.

For those who are on at double figures then well done, but his price is far too short now imv. I think Vautour is still the one to beat, as Forty has said in the previous post.
Report SoYouThink February 23, 2014 10:54 AM GMT
Vautour is closely matched with Western Boy in the Moscow Flyer Hurdle. I watched Wicklow Brave's race and was seriously impressed by him too (everything in the field a winner going into the race and he won quite comfortably) - I wouldn't think there's much between the Mullins runners. Also thought The Tullow Tank was given a lot to do in the Deloitte and wasn't really losing ground on Vautour after the last. Haven't seen Valseur Lido's win at Navan but wonder why he hasn't been seen since?

Also haven't seen this year's Tolworth Hurdle but I'm thinking Josses Hill for this and Royal Son for the Neptune? Of the UK runners, Irving definitely the most impressive and I would rate his win yesterday as the most eyecatching too.

Not sure if it's a strong renewal but definitely think it's competitive. Back to Western Boy, I presume Russell keeps the ride? Aso heard he rides Morning Assembly so it's good to see the smaller Irish trainers are turning to Davy after his falling out with Gigginstown. Hope he gets a winner or two.
Report wellchief February 23, 2014 11:12 AM GMT
Can't disagree with any of that SYT.  I too like Western Boy and at 16's is too big for me.  I thought he quickened better than Vautour, but Vautour just outstayed him after the last.  Pat Fahy has said better ground will bring tonnes of improvement from him.

As you say, Irving is a long way clear of the English runners though, but not really sure what he beat yesterday.
Report ACStafford February 23, 2014 12:32 PM GMT
Will Ruby definitely pick Vautour? I'm not sure there's much in him and Wicklow Brave.
Report SoYouThink February 23, 2014 12:36 PM GMT
I'd expect he would, he's the favourite, he's the G1 winner, he's owned by the more influential owner. All in all, I wouldn't read too much into it as Townend is able deputy.
Report ACStafford February 23, 2014 12:41 PM GMT
I agree that Townend is a very good jockey the majority of the time, but, for whatever reason, he seems to have a very poor record at Cheltenham, with 1 win from 47 rides in the last five years. Despite getting second choice the majority of the time, you would still expect it to be far higher than this.
Report alleged22 February 23, 2014 1:09 PM GMT
im a tad surprised that irving is vying for favouritism... CF last year was still available at 20,s a week before last years supreme and he was a grade 1 winner, so on that basis I think vautor is also too short.

Timeform have Irving on 143p (up 1 pound for Saturday's win), Josses Hill on 143p as well, and Vautour on 149p.
Report Simonw1981 February 24, 2014 7:31 PM GMT

It does look a weak renewal.

Vautour looks a chaser in the making to me with the size of his frame. Irving has looked really good and wish I took the 16's when it was available but he's yet to come under any real pressure or test. I like Josses Hill who still looks overpriced at 12/1. No money waiting to back Josses Hill either. He is due to work on Friday at Kempton with several other high profile horses from NJH's yard.

Plenty of money today for Wicklow Brave, gutted i was going to back that tonight at 9s, hes now just 15/2 with sly bet!
Report cufcno1 February 25, 2014 5:11 PM GMT
i doubled wicklow brave with 3 horses yesterday which all got beat..typical lol
Report Forty February 25, 2014 5:12 PM GMT
Surely the reason why Wicklow Brave has shortened is just a reaction from punters wary of Vautour not running.  If you look on the other threads I'm sure BallyDoyle has covered on WB.  I'm sure he is not the only one!

4 and a half grand trying to get on at just over 4/1 seems pretty positive for vautour backers!!!

Yes Barnesey if there was anything big happening that would not last long.
Report sj February 25, 2014 5:44 PM GMT
I wouldnt bother trying to read it on here. that 4 and a half grand has gone wether matched or not. Whats telling is Wicklow being cut across the board and Vautour being shoved out by the bookies
Report Tory February 25, 2014 5:53 PM GMT
Guess we also have to remember that many people got on at 16/1 - 20/1 and could be getting out of it, which at this stage is what I'd be doing.

Today is a work day at Mullins
It is clear that Ruby is switching mounts
Don't think its trading out making this drift
Report sintonian February 25, 2014 8:45 PM GMT
It wouldn't be people getting out of their big prices. It wouldn't be a case of all of them suddenly deciding to trade. It is more likely informed money. The fact a couple of firms have bumped him out too is the worry for his ante-post backers, imo.

P a d d y  P o w e r - Now going NRNB and money back up to £50 if your win selection finishes 2nd 3rd or 4th. Personally don't fancy Irving at all but having got Vautor, WB & JH as good winners had to have the £50 win on him as cover - Guess that's this years big headline special like money back if HF SS CV et al won in the past

Anyone know what Wicklow Brave's Timeform rating is? Thanks

Vaniteux is shortening whilst Josses Hill is on the drift. Will Geraghty be on Vaniteux?
Report buddeliea March 3, 2014 6:45 PM GMT
"It will be a tough call," he said, "I am probably leaning towards Vautour and I have won the race on stayers in the past. He seems to be a good stayer but they all have at least two more bits of work to do and they have to travel.

"But Wicklow Brave is a good horse, he's got a lot of speed. He jumped only okay the last day but I think he'll improve on that and he's a hell of a good horse and I hope I'm on the right one."

Looks like Ruby will be on Vatour.

Walsh rides Vautour
Report callitasucit March 3, 2014 9:45 PM GMT
Betting suggests that Vaniteaux has done a bit of work that will sway BJG. I was all over him at Kempton at Christmas, but he didn't jump a hurdle. Still looked the likely winner approaching the last, only to get it totally wrong when needing a big one. Jumping problems seemed to be ironed out at Donny the last day, and he certainly has a serious engine. Backed him NRNB at 16s. Think he the danger to Irving.
Report chief dan March 3, 2014 9:47 PM GMT
I still fancy Wicklow who ever rides, vautor is a good jumper an imo will make a better chaser next year just think he be done for toe as long as the lads don't give ruby an easy 10 length lead like last year!

Report Ballydoyle March 7, 2014 1:55 PM GMT
Would concern me that Irving and Vautour didn't run in bumpers and are french bred. Got Vautour on side but Wicklow Brave fits every trend going.

Coming from a handicap are 0-53 since 1996 so Gigamboa and Splash of Ginge are out of my equation also.

What trend does vautour miss please?

And, does it matter that the handicap Splash of Ginge comes from is a graded handicap, kinda says hes ran in a graded race dun it? A might be wrong but horses coming from the betfair hdl have a good record of placing in the supreme or at least running equally well without winning? At 25/1, he might surprise if a contenderConfused

me too. like the look of Wicklow Brave, even better at 7/1... Gilgamboa could be worth a saver ..... the only other one I like is Splash Of Ginge but can't back it myself.. just going to stick with my win bet on WB
